Emergency Rental, Food, and Bills Assistance Programs

How to get help with rent?

At times, many families find themselves homeless, or unable to continue to occupy the premises of their choice. This may be due to fire, accident, storms or many other causes, but often it is merely a problem in paying the rent. Illness that forces a breadwinner to stay home, or loss of a job; any and all of these conditions can put a family in need of temporary assistance to tide itself over until the members of the family find themselves again in a position to pay their own rent without the need of subsidising or other rental assistance.

Agencies have been set up in many parts of the country to help in this regard. Non-profit organizations, these charities, such as The Salvation Army, as well as some governmental agencies are often able to offer emergency rental assistance for families who are being evicted by a landlord, or who simply have no way to pay their rent at the moment. Realizing that landlords, despite the old cartoon imagery of a rich greedy person feeding off the work of renters, the vast majority of landlords are not really making a profit at all on the current tenant. This is only a stopgap so that the landlord may pay the monthly house payments in the hope of some future profit if housing increases in value some years later. If the tenant can’t pay the rent, the landlord may soon find himself in the same position with regard to the lender. Lenders do not want to hear sad stories.

Although these different programs for rental assistance may be available, much depends upon the funding at the moment. Some programs quickly run out of money and are simply unable at the moment to provide further help to persons in need of assistance.

The vast majority of families in need of temporary rental assistance are those to be found in the low-income range; seniors, disable persons and children are among those most often affected. Others too, faced at one point or another with a temporary emergency may qualify for assistance in these cases.

In most cases, those in need of longer-term assistance, persons who have not been gainfully employed for a considerable length of time with not prospects for the immediate future may not qualify for rental assistance under these temporary emergency programs.

Those more likely to receive aid are persons who are able to convince interviewers of their willingness to do what is necessary to get back on their feet along with the ability to do so. Since emergency funding is considered a short-term “fix” for a crisis situation, the grants may be only issued for a few days, perhaps to defray the cost of a motel room, pending the applicant’s ability to find other lodgings.

Therefore it is important, in most similar cases, for the applicant to show the interviewer the imminent possibility to become self-sufficient.

Most non-profit agencies as well as other agencies attempt to work closely with rental assistance applicants to help them with any additional support as needed depending upon each applicant’s situation. Often applicants are further given counseling and referrals to other agencies that may be more helpful to an applicant.

In such cases, any additional services rendered are free to the applicant in crisis. This may include lack of employment and such other problems that may arise such as medical emergencies. Most agencies participate in these endeavors as well as teaching applicants the processes involved in applying for governmental programs, immediate rehousing and how to apply for Section 8 vouchers as well as information about low income housing, and assistance in paying the security deposits that are almost universally demanded by today’s rental market.

Since the goal of all similar agencies to to render aid to persons in immediate need of emergency housing and other crisis situations, the funds issued to applicants for rent or other necessities is only meant to allow the applicant extra time to deal with the emergency. However, at the same time, applicants will normally be provided with support in the long term to guard against similar future emergencies.

If you have an eviction notice or expect to be unable to pay the rent in the immediate future, or even realize that you need to find less expensive living quarters, now is the time to apply for assistance. Often with early application, money may be available to catch up unpaid rent as well as other options that may be explained to you.

Assistance may also be available to help with the security deposit, the initial rents and even moving costs. In some cities non-profit agencies may offer other emergency assistance to those in crisis. These funds are normally paid out on a one-time basis. Depending upon the location, resources that may be in place for housing crisis families can be wide-ranging.

Potential applicants are advised to find the telephone numbers as well as any other information available to them and educate themselves about the different programs that may be able to help with emergency assistance.

Not only non-profit private agencies, but many governmental agencies, are able to provide interim assistance, depending on the locality. Massachusetts has a program called RAFT, while in Texas a rental assistance program called TDHCA is available. Florida has a similar program called EFAHP and in Connecticut their program is called RAP. Many other government programs around the country also offer assistance to pay rent or a portion of overdue rent in their ongoing efforts to reduce the growing threat of homelessness in their particular communities.

Another program, called the Federal Stimulus Program is a little-known program through which our federal government provides billions of dollars across the nation to provide rental assistance for qualified applicants. These funds have become invaluable to families that find it increasingly difficult to keep up with the rising costs of rent and other housing needs.

HUD the Housing and Urban Development, agency works throughout the country as well. A number of families approaching two million are able to use this program, a program that can not only help those in need to pay their rent and/or security deposits, but HUD can issue vouchers to provide temporary housing as well as providing assistance to senior citizens and the disabled to keep up with overdue rental payments.

These programs not only offer grants to help pay rent, but the government Rent Voucher Program aids applicants to seek housing in the privately owned housing market.

These agencies can, generally, offer legal advice to those facing eviction. Every year millions of people receive free legal advice and assistance to educate them with the eviction process and their rights as well as responsibilities. The government provides funded Legal Services Corp. which provides attorneys who may mediate a solution between landlord and tenants in addition to advising tenants of their rights as well as help them apply for Section 8 or other assistance and another positive aid they offer is help and counseling on housing discrimination.

Counseling may also be provided to help applicants apply for government and/or private grants. Money is available for many of these crisis situations.

It is the goal of these agencies to prevent evictions wherever possible. The federal government as well as the many non-profit private agencies strive wherever possible to help applicants remain in their current quarters without the fear of being summarily evicted. Often these agencies are able not only to prevent evictions, but subsequent lawsuits that may be brought against a tenant. Alternatively, the agency may be able to find more suitable and affordable housing for an applicant facing eviction.

Many churches too offer funds that can help those in short-term financial difficulties. United Way and The Salvation Army are only two of the better-known charitable institutions that may be able to offer help when needed. Generally they give priority to those living in apartments and facing short-term financial crises.

A good number of other national and local charities are ready to help with the expenses of rent and other essential needs as well as providing case management and many other social services. No all charities have ready money all the time, but even those may be able to help by helping an applicant with information about other resources and assistance in applying for free grants to pay overdue rent.

Other agencies that often provide help might be, for example, Catholic Charities, Social Service Offices, United Way, the American Red Cross, the Legal Aid Society and as mentioned earlier, The Salvation Army. Aside from these examples there exist many other emergency aid agencies for those who are able to become informed.

While most of these programs provide only short-term emergency aid, they are designed for the most part to tide a family over until a longer-term solution becomes available. Often these same agencies will be able to direct qualified applicants to resources that may assist them in finding an apartment or house for more permanent security.

It is important however, during these times of crisis, to keep in touch with creditors and the applicant’s current landlord so they understand what you are doing and what you expect to accomplishment. It is important that the applicant be extremely honest with everyone about the situation and it may sometimes be possible to have monthly payments temporarily lowered, or even be allowed to skip a monthly rental payment. Other plans may be devised and put into place to avoid being evicted.

It is well-understood that not only landlords but other creditors too are much more willing to cooperate with persons who are up-front with them, honest in their discussions and show a willingness to cooperate and do whatever they can to improve with situations.

How to get help with bills?

Ask The Energy Company

if energy bills are the source of the hardship, then the energy providers’ own in-house programs are often the quickest way to help rearrange and meet repayments.

LIHEAP: Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program

This national program’s focus is on subsidies for repairs, weatherproofing and utility bills that families cannot afford to pay.

LIHEAP covers any energy related home repairs for low-icome families, including seasonal expenses like air cooling systems and winter heating bills. The local LIHEAP office is the first point of contact for those in need of energy or utility assistance. Eligibility varies from state to state.

WAP: Weatherization Assistance Program

The WAP is a federal grant organized by the Department of Energy that helps needy families improve their homes’ energy efficiency, and has assisted over 7 million households across many states, territories and Native American tribes since its inception in 1976.

According to the DOE guidelines, a household with anyone over 60 is eligible for the WAP, as are legally recognized disabled people. Most states make families with children eligible, and the website for the WAPTAC (Weatherization Assistance Program Technical Assistance Center) can advise others if the grants are available in their area, and whether they qualify.

LifeLine Assistance: Free Cell Phones

Americans in need of a cell phone plan but without the means to maintain one can get assistance from LifeLine Assistance‘s free phone program. This is indeed a lifeline as daily life and business in particular is practically impossible without a mobile phone.

LLA is an FCC mandated scheme offering a free cell phone with at least 250 monthly minutes included. It’s available in the 49 states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico, and typically requires a household income below 135% of Federal Poverty guidelines. For some states it is below 150%. Eligibility varies across participating states, with slightly different rules around qualifying income.

Other sources of help are available at state government level, or many national and local non-profit and charity organizations, and the energy companies themselves.

How to get Food For Free?

It doesn’t always require money to eat, and there are many ways to gain free food without adding to your debts or joining the 10% of Americans who have resorted to shoplifting. Ask people you know, or traders and restaurant and store owners.

Above all it’s important to explain why you are asking for food: because you can’t afford to eat. And not to be critical about what food you eat. Without a certain amount of money, there is no longer the choice of what to eat. So meat may become harder to get or if meat’s all that’s on offer and you are a vegetarian, it’s best to accept it with thanks.

Grow Your Own, Share With The Community

The most sustainable – and satisfying – way to provide free food for yourself is to grow it, and you can start with just seeds if you live in the country or with just a small space in the city. Guerrilla gardening is an interesting urban option, more organised community gardens and allotments can share space and expertise for growing, and seed swapping communities among gardeners are a good source of materials and encouragement.

Ask A Farmer

Out in the sticks there won’t be the option of stores and restaurants as a source of food, but ask any farmer and there’ll be some left on the fields that they didn’t or can’t sell. Many will let you pick these leftovers.

Food Banks

A rapidly growing movement in the United Kingdom and US is the organized and charitable distribution of food to those who can’t afford it. Most of the food is donated, and food banks are one of the easiest ways to obtain some nutritious food. Many banks have conditions for who they can give food to, but there is no need to be ashamed about visiting one.

Links to Food Banks in various countries

United States /United Kingdom /Austalia /Canada /Ireland /New Zealand /South Africa

Offers and coupons

Online and direct from the stores, many coupons are available to promote new products. And companies across the United States send out free samples of new products. They’re unlikely to provide a healthy, balanced diet on their own but could supplement free food from other sources.

Waste Food

In an affluent country there is an abundance of unsold or waste food, and a little social interaction and resourcefulness can unlock access to a surprising amount of it.

Ask at the market

Often around closing time, stall holders will sell off any remaining stock for next to nothing, and it’s always worth telling them you have no money and asking if they’ll give you something for free. You can often pick up some fruit or salad, and if they can’t offer anything, thank them anyway and ask at another stall.

Free Supermarket Food

Ask at the big stores and you’ll be too far down the chain of command: “My boss doesn’t allow us to do that” will be the usual answer. So smaller supermarkets and neighborhood stores are a better option, where you can talk to that boss. You may find warmth and generosity among Muslims and immigrants to the West who run stores.

Restaurant Leftovers

It requires some patience, a little nerve and a bit of practice, but it’s possible to get free, professionally prepared food, even a table to sit and eat it at. Restaurant districts in cities are obviously the best place to try this, and expect a success rate around 5%, so it requires persistence, but will sharpen your bargaining skills, and who knows where else that could lead?

Turn up at a restaurant after the busiest time but not too late, and explain that you have no money and ask if they have some left overs in the kitchen. It can help to have a container such as a plastic box ready in case they do have something, and if they’re friendly and can’t offer anything the first time, maybe they can put something aside the next day.

Searching and Foraging

It grows on trees, on the ground and some seasons there’ll be abundant fruit and tasty plants such as dandelions or chickweed. Even cities can produce some tasty wild food, and anyone near downtown Seattle has access to America’s first Food Forest in a major city.

Dumpster Diving

Growing media coverage of the colossal food wastage at supermarkets and restaurants has made it much less weird, and more popular, to search through the dumpsters in search of some quality food to turn into a meal.

Need Assistance to First Paycheck – Starting New Job – Living Out Of My Car

Me Suit.jpgangela and kids.jpg

The coronavirus hit my business hard starting in March of 2020. Gov. Jared Polis ordered all non-essential businesses closed down, including restaurants. My business marketed a training program to restaurant owners to improve food-server and front-of-house management skills. Colorado’s stay-at-home executive order went on longer than I expected and I was forced to close my business.

By August, I depleted my savings. I couldn’t pay my rent or meet my financial obligations. By November; my girlfriend, her 15-year-old son and I were living out of my 1986 Toyota Corolla.

Fortunately, I start as a Customer Service Representative with a major corporation after the holidays. I won’t get my first paycheck until early February. Each time I raise enough money working through a temp. service, my extended family and I stay in inexpensive hotels. It gets us off the streets, which are brutal mentally. Today is Christmas and we are completely broke. We are really in a bad way. But the real struggle is going to be next month when I have to look presentable and be rested for a 50 hour a week corporate job.

If it is within your power to help us out in any way, I will pay it forward to someone in similar dire straits in the future.

I have lived in Brooks Tower since 2011. My girlfriend and I found a furnished corporate apartment that we could rent for $2500 a month thru January until my steady paychecks start coming in. I don’t know how I could manage a 50-hour a week office job, living out of our rundown Corolla. This donation would help 3 lives, and make it possible to get through the first month of my new job, without losing it.

Before the Covid-19 crisis hurt my business, I wasn’t rich but I lived comfortably well. I’m a U.S. Army Veteran, a combat medic, and proud that I served our Country. If someone would have told me not to risk my life because when retirement age comes around our government will be creating more homeless people than jobs, I would have said they are delusional. But here I am.

Take a look at what is happening in California; millions of folks are on the brink of getting evicted or forced to foreclose on their homes. I had a business I enjoyed and never would have thought this could happen to me. I’m age 59…I’m going to have to bounce back quickly.

Last week, I landed a good job with adequate pay. But I need help to get us through January.

I know there has to be someone out there that finds my circumstances harrowing. Because my story is soon to be thousands upon thousands of other peoples’ stories if we are not careful as a nation. If nothing else compare how I was living pre-coronavirus versus until now! It’s a cruel Awakening.

If funding isn’t possible, perhaps someone has some airline miles and can pay for corporate housing or a hotel for the month of January, or gift cards we could redeem, anything to help us with housing, until I get back on my feet. I can meet with you of course and I have PayPal.

I’m not seeking a handout but undeniably need assistance. Moreover, I will repay you with interest within 3 months. Thank you for hearing me out. Most appreciatively, Me!

Young Refugee Taking Care of his Paralyzed Father Alone with lots of Debts.

I am a young Syrian refugee in Egypt eight years ago, my family and I lost everything we had in Syria. My parents and I live together and I am responsible for them, and they have no support from anyone else. In our second year in Egypt in 2013, my father was exposed to transverse myelitis, which paralyzed him. Since that day, I have been serving him and my mother, and I can only work for very short times. Debts are piling up on me, and I can’t find a way to pay them back. Since the beginning of last year, with the emergence of Corona and the ban, I cannot work at all, and my debts have increased. Also, at the beginning of the last year, my father contracted a new disease, pemphigoid. I need to undergo surgery to support my father about three thousand dollars, and also to pay off my debts, which exceeded seven thousand dollars since my arrival in Egypt. I never imagined that someday I would request financial aid, but I am obliged to do so greatly. Everyone from whom I borrowed money demands it from me, otherwise, they will tell the police. Unfortunately, charities here in Egypt and UNHCR do not provide us with any assistance mentioned.

In the end, I am a very ambitious and educated young man, and I assure you that someday I will be in a good financial position and help people in need and return the favor.

So, what I need to pay off my debts accumulated over eight years and to perform surgeries to support my father are more than ten thousand dollars. I am grateful to everyone who will help me.

Legal Defense Funds/Shelter/Storage

Sorry for not having a picture. I’m on a mobile phone and the site won’t accept anything I try to upload due to file size limits. :(

Hey guys…

This sucks. I am not good at asking for help. I don’t know if it’s pride or shame or what, but it really hurts to do. I certainly wouldn’t if I knew of anything else to do. If I thought there was a shadow of a chance I could handle this on my own.

I’m facing up to 3 years in prison and $100k in fines due to a really dumb mistake and misunderstanding. Unfortunately I can’t depend on the court to believe that it wasn’t as serious as the charges imply.

It couldn’t have happened at a worse time. This year has depleted any scrap of savings I managed to put together last year after crawling out of a previous financial catastrophe. I have a few hundred dollars to my name, no family or friends, and moved to my location right before lockdown so I haven’t even made many acquaintances here. I really am alone.

I desperately need legal representation to try to at least reduce the severity of punishment. The lowest ballpark of which I can find is around $10k.

My lease ends in 30 days and I am not allowed to return to the house at the moment. My entire family history and every heirloom is in that house as I promised to care for them and keep them safe when my family all died over the last few years.

Also in the house are everything I own (including stuff I could sell to help make some survival cash) and the rotting corpse of my last friend in the world, my pet who passed away the day before I was arrested… Waiting to be buried in a meaningful spot.

I am hoping that I can be granted access to the house to remove my things and put them in storage until such time that I am able to distribute and dispose of things properly. The last thing in the world I wanted was to leave the burden of cleaning up my mess to someone else. Especially the people in the house who are now wondering what to do and have enough on their plate suddenly having to move after all this.

I already couldn’t afford the medical care I need for my illnesses but now I don’t even have access to the otc and makeshift treatments I use on a daily basis to reduce a little bit of the symptoms.

As I’m not allowed to go to the house or contact anyone within, I am now living in my car (which is also in desperate need of maintenance and repair.) I’ve lived in cars before but it’s been a long time, and I wasn’t so ill then, or living in a place with heavy snow/ice and subzero temps in the winter…

I’m working whatever gig apps I can to take advantage of the car while I have it, and hopefully make enough to keep it running. Unfortunately the Christmas spirit hasn’t been as sparkly as usual this year, with everyone suffering more than usual. Some days it’s hard to make much after gas and expenses.

I’m trying to do everything I can to make this work but I just don’t see any way I’m going to accomplish it alone. So I have turned to the compassion of strangers. I have no expectations. But any help that comes of this, even if it’s just a hot coffee or two, would help me feel a little less alone in this surreal and confusing situation.

I’m sorry if this is too windy. I tried to be as brief as possible and include as few unnecessary details as I can.

Thank you so much for your time,
Happy Holidays

Mom (87 yo)needs the money we owe her (24,000) or she will be kicked out of Senior Center

First, I would like to thank you for reading this letter.

Second, I am writing on behalf of my husband. I had to try something to relieve all the tension and pressure we are going through at this moment.

Well, in August of 2019 we decided to move from MN to FL. The cost of living in MN had become unbearable for us. The hard winter was consuming any money we earned. My husband is over sixty and his back problems made too hard to cut wood for keeping the house warm. I was working hard but still the bad weather for 6 months was taking our savings away.

We put our house for sale and did not take much to find a buyer. We thought the equity will be enough to pay for a simple, small trailer house in the Sunshine State as a starting.

On the day we had to sign the papers selling our home in MN, the broker called us and said there was an old predatory lender reattaching 24,000 to our house that came out of blue. My husband thought that amount had been included in the last time he had the house refinanced. But that was bad deal made by City Mortgage and United Guarantee Insurance that ended up with all bad mortgages during the crises in 2008-2009. They took the second mortgage and hid it. They waited until the last minute to let us know about that.

We panicked! All we had (our three dogs) was in our car, ready to start our way to Florida. The buyer was ready to sign the papers. So, our only option was to pay the $24,000.00 out of our equity.

But then we did not have the enough money to pay for our trailer house in Florida anymore!

So, my husband went to his mother, 87 years old lady, and asked for her help. She had some of her retiring money in her savings account. She gave him the amount of 24,000 saying he could pay her back when he had the money.

So, we came to Florida and went to the local bank asking for refinance our little trailer house in cash. It was not easy as we first thought it would be. The VA assistance, where we looked for help, told us they do not refinance trailer homes built in 1997 as our single wide mobile house. We went to several banks and no luck. Finally, one bank helped us but not enough to pay my husband’s loan with his mom. We paid the move company and the expenses with our trip. We had to buy a washer and dryer because the house did not have those. We also cleaned the yard and put it up a fence with a gate, for the safety of our neighbors because of our dogs.

Those were the expenses paid with the refinancing from this bank. It was not much, but at least we were and still are free of credit cards debits.

We thought we had time to pay back his mom. My husband got a job working in a local distribution center, making $16.71 an hour. I was looking for a job to help him. We have only one vehicle and I would have to find a job managing for we both use the same car.  At least in the beginning.

Then, the pandemic hit our lives. What a disaster in our plans as it was and still is in so many other families’ plans.

My husband`s work in considered essential as he works to keep the food available for the population. He packs loads and loads of boxes with food. It is a hard work for a man in his age. He is the oldest man among the young ones, but he keeps going, because we must survive.

I am a cancer survivor and still in remission. He decided that I should wait a little more to start a job. Because during the pandemic it would be not the best time for me to be out there looking for a job. I also have other health issues what put me in a high-risk group.

God knows how my heart is in pain every day when my husband leaves to go to work and I MUST stay at home because I am considered high risk group due cancer in remission. I talked to my husband about to work in the same place where he works, but he says I cannot make because it is too hard, besides, I can’t lift anything over 10lbs due the surgery.

It is not easy for me not to be at work. I was born a warrior and became a workaholic as my grandfather. I love to be useful somehow to the humanity in general through my work. So, I feel awfully bad not be able to help my husband. So, I put some applications online anyway, but still no luck. I think age and the fact I am an immigrant (naturalized American) make my chances even smaller.

Well, but the real problem started by New Year’s Eve (Dec 31st 2020), when my husband`s brother called to let him know that their mom needs the amount we own immediately, because the money she had is all over and the Senior Center where she lives called to start the process to get Medicaid help. However, the Medicaid office agent in her town said they are not going to pay for her bill until this money $24,000 (that we received from her as a loan) is back to her bank account.

That was a terribly upset New Year’s surprise. We are lost!

The whole family is blaming us. Calling us to solve the problem, or their mom will be place out of the Senior Center. They keep calling asking us to find a solution.

We have tried to get a loan, but we do not have equity in the trailer house to cover the amount. It has been a little over a year since we are living here. The house is an old house. We do not have anything else to be used as a collateral.

The stress that all this situation is causing to both of us is tremendous. It causes lots of damage in my heart and emotional health. I am also worried about my old man. He is under too much pressure and shame because all his family members know that we owe the money and… even worst… they know that we are not able to pay back as said and planned.

And now, we are blamed for the situation his old mom is about to face, what is be kicked out of the Senior Center where she receives the medical assistance she needs.

We do not know what to do. That is why I decided to ask for help. I might not be able to find a work right now due the pandemic circumstances, but I sure can look for a way to minimize my husband’s anguish.

I was not shaped to live with debts. Besides, I believe “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.” Romans 13:8

The best thing will be to find a job for me, and I trust in God that will happen as soon as the pandemic is over, or at least when I get vaccinated. However, my husband’s mother cannot wait anymore.

The bottom line is we owe the money, we want to pay but things just did not work as planned.

Thank you very much for your help. Any help!

It shouldn’t have been this way

I was 16. I didn’t mean to do it. I was driving a car with my sister in the passenger seat, when we wrecked. I wasn’t drunk or high, I had a single beer HOURS prior to that at my parents home. For what seemed like hours, yet was probably only a few minutes, I heard her scream as she burned to death. The screams haunt my sleep every night. Then the silence. Silence is the most powerful scream. And I was there with her lifeless, charred corpse until help got there. If it couldn’t get worse, I was treated like a scum of the earth criminal. And then the handcuffs. Earlier that day we had been at home and I had ONE BEER. Because I was a minor, and had .008 alcohol level in my system, I was charged with vehicular homicide. Sent to jail and placed in a cell by myself for the next 13 months. The last thing I had heard from anyone I knew or cared about during those 13 months was my sister screaming. The moment I heard the silence everything about me changed. I hate what used to be my favorite color. My then favorite food now makes me gag. I don’t drive anymore. I take adderal at night to keep from going to sleep, because I know that when I do fall asleep, I’m going to watch it all replay again over and over. 16 years later I am trying to get my life together and stop letting this define me. I need help with school fees, household bills, and therapist costs

Help Me Today & I’ll Pay It Forward Tomorrow

So let’s get this out in the open straight away.

I am asking you to donate to me and I am not going to give anything to you or do anything for you in return.

I intend to pay this goodwill and generosity forward when I am pretty much sorted, but right now, today as you read this, I cannot give you anything back in return.

So why should you help me?

Because as humans, we are inherently kind and want to help others when we can.

About Me

I’d love to tell you exactly who I am but as you read on, you will understand why I can’t, just yet.

I am married with 4 children. Back in the day, I was a bit of a high-flier with my job flying me all over the world. I was good (and still am) with people, could see the big picture and my successes lead to promotions which led me being head of departments. I loved the travel and always packed an extra case for duty-free and shopping trips.

I was outgoing, confident and would look in the mirror and think ‘yes, you are attractive’. Ok, maybe I should add modesty to that list of adjectives too then :-)

However, I had to fight hard to get what I had and where I was.

My mother left me with my grandparents when I was 2 whilst she travelled the world without a care or second thought for me.

I had no idea who my father was – his name wasn’t listed on my birth certificate. Not too sure what that says about my mum – either she was very forgetful or my dad really hurt her. Probably the latter as she stayed bitter and twisted until she died.

I went into care when I was 10 – being brought up in care made me tough and a bit of a self-starter, reliant on myself.

I met my husband in my late 20s and immediately thought this is it! I have finally found the man that I am going to spend the rest of my life with.

It took 20 years of non-physical abuse, aka marriage, to finally break me mentally and drive me to 2 years of weekly therapy sessions to finally see that I had in fact married a narcissist.

I wasn’t going mad when I thought my husband was belittling me, demeaning me, that he was didn’t care what he was doing to me if it made him feel better about himself.

20 years of narcissistic abuse akin to Chinese water torcher wore me down, completely shattered my self-confidence and self-belief in every, and so many other ways imaginable.

But the dealbreaker is seeing how his behavior is now affecting our children. The constant put-downs and sniping is causing them to doubt themselves, to second guess if they can actually do something.

I tell them that they were born to fly. He gives them every reason why they can’t.

I need to leave for not only my mental health but for that of my children too.

Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as packing our bags and off we go.

I have a part-time job that would just about cover the rent on a one-bedroom property in the crappiest area of town.

I started a business during the first lockdown and though sales are increasing, it’s still not enough to help me set up on my own with the kids.

Plus, if my husband were to get wind of me leaving before I’m ready to go, he would make everyone’s life a living hell.

This is why I have to do this anonymously, for now.

This is where I’m asking for your help.

Night after night, day after day, I think about how can I get enough money to be able to leave on my terms. My business is my long term plan but this year with Covid-19, Christmas and New Year has shown me that waiting another 12 months is simply not an option for me or my children.

I need out. We need out. Now. And I need out within weeks, not months or years.

So I asked the Universe what can I do and this idea started to grow and I thought, ‘what will it hurt to ask?’

Can you donate to help me move into a home where I and my children can relax and be happy once we walk through the door?

Can you donate to help me move into a home where I don’t have a panic attack when I hear my husband’s key turn in the door?

Can you help me by donating so my children can hear the voice that tells them that they can fly as high and far as they choose to and not the voice that is like an anchor pulling them down?

How I will Pay it Forward

I will do my utmost to help any man or woman in the same position as me. I don’t know how yet, but I promise that I will help in any way that I can.

I will support charities that help disadvantaged children with my time, fundraising and any other way that the charity advises that I can help.
