I know times are hard for a lot of people right now.

After graduating college, I was so excited about starting my future. I moved back home with my parents, began my first job, and mapped out a financial plan to manage my student loans and start saving for what I was building toward. But over time, the role I was working toward at my job became a series of unmet promises, and stability never came my way. Staying ahead financially became harder and harder, the balances quickly grew beyond what I could manage. I soon understood the meaning of living paycheck to paycheck. While the debt of my student loans and the simple needs to get by continued to come my way, I continued facing more and more financial setbacks and unexpected expenses. As of now, almost 2 years later, I am still living at my parents home, doing all I can to dig myself out of the debt, and create a realistic path to my independence and stability.

I feel so incredibly anxious and weighed down by this financial stress that seems like it will never end. It constantly consumes me thinking about when I will be able to just get to 0 again.

I’m here looking for help to reduce my credit card debt so I can get back on stable footing. I have a bit of an issue, and I typically hate asking for help (Let alone money), but I’ve run out of options and don’t really know what to do.  I’ve been having issues with bills and debt as of late, and ordinarily, it wouldn’t be something I’d reach out for help for, but it’s taking a turn for the worse.  Recently, my car completely shut down, and it will take $5k to fix on top of the bills I already can’t afford. I would sell my car and buy a new one with the money, but nobody is willing to buy it. The parts that need repairs are worth more than what the car is worth. This has resulted in me walking 12 miles to and from work with occasional rides. This was unbearable, but I forced myself to think positively. I tried to think of it as a much-needed exercise; however, positive thinking could only get me so far. My job began to see it as a hindrance and began to write me up, even after I explained my situation to them. This led to me eventually losing my job, my only source of income. This, as you can imagine, quickly became the breaking point. I was jobless, without a car, and the bills were piling up higher and faster. Nobody wanted to hire someone without a car, and every job I applied to denied me without an interview.

As if things couldn’t get any worse, I began to spiral into a mental breakdown, which led to having a seizure in the middle of my parents’ living room. Growing up, I’ve always had a history of seizures because of the tumors on my brain that still remain to this day. It’s because of my tumors and the threat of seizures is why I’ve gotten decent at regulating my stress levels. I haven’t had a seizure since early high school, but I think these past couple of months have caused me to exceed my tolerance threshold for stress. Between medical expenses, my car, and other accumulating debt, I’m 22k in the hole, and I don’t know what to do. I’m afraid of having another breakdown and seizing on the floor again from stress. I am a single parent and foster parent that has been working hard to clear out debt from student loans and credit cards to some day be able to become a home owner and give my children a forever home and not have to think about landlords some day evicting us from our current home.

Due to me being the only income in my home makes it difficult for me to stay on top of bills, necessities, pay off debt and student loans faster to accomplish my dreams and goals. I am a dedicated parent and foster parent that looks forward to helping children in need of a loving and caring home but also making sure those children have everything they need to live a good quality life while they are in my home. Like many students across the country, I believed that going to college was the key to building a better future. I worked hard to get accepted into a university, dedicated myself to earning a degree, and took out student loans with the belief that I was making a wise investment in myself. Now that I’ve graduated, the reality is much more complicated. I am currently struggling under the weight of my student loans, and I am reaching out for help because I simply cannot manage this burden on my own.

During my time in school, I did everything I could to minimize debt—working part-time jobs, applying for scholarships, and living on a tight budget. Still, the cost of tuition, textbooks, and living expenses added up quickly. By the time I completed my degree, I had accumulated more debt than I ever expected. I understood that repayment would be difficult at first, but I underestimated just how much pressure it would put on every area of my life.

Since graduating, I have been trying my best to make payments on my student loans, but due to rent, groceries, transportation, car notes and other essentials I am unable to pay off my debt. I am doing my best to stay afloat, but I feel like I’m falling behind financially and emotionally which keeps me up at night. The stress of constant repayment deadlines and growing interest has become overwhelming.

I am open to any form of assistance. I am pleading with anyone who will be willing to help out of the kindest of their heart to get rid of this burden on my back. Eliminating this student loan will tremendously improve my mental state, and would put me in a better place to be able to get other things done. Several years ago, my life changed forever when my beloved husband was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. It was only after his death that I discovered our life insurance policy had lapsed—he had missed a payment, and I was left not only grieving but also unprepared financially.

We had always planned for stability. But instead, I was left with his outstanding debts, and shortly after, our son—who had been awarded a full scholarship to college—lost his funding in his final year. Determined to help him graduate, I borrowed $20,000 in Parent PLUS student loans so he wouldn’t have to abandon his education. He worked two jobs, but it wasn’t enough. As a mother, I did what I felt I had to do.

Then, I lost my job. For over two years, I could only find part-time work. During this time, I defaulted on the student loan, and with compound interest and penalties, the balance ballooned to $95,286.34—an overwhelming burden I’ve been trying to chip away at ever since.

I’m working again and making payments, but the weight of this debt has prevented me from moving forward. I can’t move or get a fresh start. I’m stuck—not for lack of effort, but because of circumstances beyond my control.
