Emergency Rental, Food, and Bills Assistance Programs
How to get help with rent?
At times, many families find themselves homeless, or unable to continue to occupy the premises of their choice. This may be due to fire, accident, storms or many other causes, but often it is merely a problem in paying the rent. Illness that forces a breadwinner to stay home, or loss of a job; any and all of these conditions can put a family in need of temporary assistance to tide itself over until the members of the family find themselves again in a position to pay their own rent without the need of subsidising or other rental assistance.
Agencies have been set up in many parts of the country to help in this regard. Non-profit organizations, these charities, such as The Salvation Army, as well as some governmental agencies are often able to offer emergency rental assistance for families who are being evicted by a landlord, or who simply have no way to pay their rent at the moment. Realizing that landlords, despite the old cartoon imagery of a rich greedy person feeding off the work of renters, the vast majority of landlords are not really making a profit at all on the current tenant. This is only a stopgap so that the landlord may pay the monthly house payments in the hope of some future profit if housing increases in value some years later. If the tenant can’t pay the rent, the landlord may soon find himself in the same position with regard to the lender. Lenders do not want to hear sad stories.
Although these different programs for rental assistance may be available, much depends upon the funding at the moment. Some programs quickly run out of money and are simply unable at the moment to provide further help to persons in need of assistance.
The vast majority of families in need of temporary rental assistance are those to be found in the low-income range; seniors, disable persons and children are among those most often affected. Others too, faced at one point or another with a temporary emergency may qualify for assistance in these cases.
In most cases, those in need of longer-term assistance, persons who have not been gainfully employed for a considerable length of time with not prospects for the immediate future may not qualify for rental assistance under these temporary emergency programs.
Those more likely to receive aid are persons who are able to convince interviewers of their willingness to do what is necessary to get back on their feet along with the ability to do so. Since emergency funding is considered a short-term “fix” for a crisis situation, the grants may be only issued for a few days, perhaps to defray the cost of a motel room, pending the applicant’s ability to find other lodgings.
Therefore it is important, in most similar cases, for the applicant to show the interviewer the imminent possibility to become self-sufficient.
Most non-profit agencies as well as other agencies attempt to work closely with rental assistance applicants to help them with any additional support as needed depending upon each applicant’s situation. Often applicants are further given counseling and referrals to other agencies that may be more helpful to an applicant.
In such cases, any additional services rendered are free to the applicant in crisis. This may include lack of employment and such other problems that may arise such as medical emergencies. Most agencies participate in these endeavors as well as teaching applicants the processes involved in applying for governmental programs, immediate rehousing and how to apply for Section 8 vouchers as well as information about low income housing, and assistance in paying the security deposits that are almost universally demanded by today’s rental market.
Since the goal of all similar agencies to to render aid to persons in immediate need of emergency housing and other crisis situations, the funds issued to applicants for rent or other necessities is only meant to allow the applicant extra time to deal with the emergency. However, at the same time, applicants will normally be provided with support in the long term to guard against similar future emergencies.
If you have an eviction notice or expect to be unable to pay the rent in the immediate future, or even realize that you need to find less expensive living quarters, now is the time to apply for assistance. Often with early application, money may be available to catch up unpaid rent as well as other options that may be explained to you.
Assistance may also be available to help with the security deposit, the initial rents and even moving costs. In some cities non-profit agencies may offer other emergency assistance to those in crisis. These funds are normally paid out on a one-time basis. Depending upon the location, resources that may be in place for housing crisis families can be wide-ranging.
Potential applicants are advised to find the telephone numbers as well as any other information available to them and educate themselves about the different programs that may be able to help with emergency assistance.
Not only non-profit private agencies, but many governmental agencies, are able to provide interim assistance, depending on the locality. Massachusetts has a program called RAFT, while in Texas a rental assistance program called TDHCA is available. Florida has a similar program called EFAHP and in Connecticut their program is called RAP. Many other government programs around the country also offer assistance to pay rent or a portion of overdue rent in their ongoing efforts to reduce the growing threat of homelessness in their particular communities.
Another program, called the Federal Stimulus Program is a little-known program through which our federal government provides billions of dollars across the nation to provide rental assistance for qualified applicants. These funds have become invaluable to families that find it increasingly difficult to keep up with the rising costs of rent and other housing needs.
HUD the Housing and Urban Development, agency works throughout the country as well. A number of families approaching two million are able to use this program, a program that can not only help those in need to pay their rent and/or security deposits, but HUD can issue vouchers to provide temporary housing as well as providing assistance to senior citizens and the disabled to keep up with overdue rental payments.
These programs not only offer grants to help pay rent, but the government Rent Voucher Program aids applicants to seek housing in the privately owned housing market.
These agencies can, generally, offer legal advice to those facing eviction. Every year millions of people receive free legal advice and assistance to educate them with the eviction process and their rights as well as responsibilities. The government provides funded Legal Services Corp. which provides attorneys who may mediate a solution between landlord and tenants in addition to advising tenants of their rights as well as help them apply for Section 8 or other assistance and another positive aid they offer is help and counseling on housing discrimination.
Counseling may also be provided to help applicants apply for government and/or private grants. Money is available for many of these crisis situations.
It is the goal of these agencies to prevent evictions wherever possible. The federal government as well as the many non-profit private agencies strive wherever possible to help applicants remain in their current quarters without the fear of being summarily evicted. Often these agencies are able not only to prevent evictions, but subsequent lawsuits that may be brought against a tenant. Alternatively, the agency may be able to find more suitable and affordable housing for an applicant facing eviction.
Many churches too offer funds that can help those in short-term financial difficulties. United Way and The Salvation Army are only two of the better-known charitable institutions that may be able to offer help when needed. Generally they give priority to those living in apartments and facing short-term financial crises.
A good number of other national and local charities are ready to help with the expenses of rent and other essential needs as well as providing case management and many other social services. No all charities have ready money all the time, but even those may be able to help by helping an applicant with information about other resources and assistance in applying for free grants to pay overdue rent.
Other agencies that often provide help might be, for example, Catholic Charities, Social Service Offices, United Way, the American Red Cross, the Legal Aid Society and as mentioned earlier, The Salvation Army. Aside from these examples there exist many other emergency aid agencies for those who are able to become informed.
While most of these programs provide only short-term emergency aid, they are designed for the most part to tide a family over until a longer-term solution becomes available. Often these same agencies will be able to direct qualified applicants to resources that may assist them in finding an apartment or house for more permanent security.
It is important however, during these times of crisis, to keep in touch with creditors and the applicant’s current landlord so they understand what you are doing and what you expect to accomplishment. It is important that the applicant be extremely honest with everyone about the situation and it may sometimes be possible to have monthly payments temporarily lowered, or even be allowed to skip a monthly rental payment. Other plans may be devised and put into place to avoid being evicted.
It is well-understood that not only landlords but other creditors too are much more willing to cooperate with persons who are up-front with them, honest in their discussions and show a willingness to cooperate and do whatever they can to improve with situations.
How to get help with bills?
Ask The Energy Company
if energy bills are the source of the hardship, then the energy providers’ own in-house programs are often the quickest way to help rearrange and meet repayments.
LIHEAP: Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program
This national program’s focus is on subsidies for repairs, weatherproofing and utility bills that families cannot afford to pay.
LIHEAP covers any energy related home repairs for low-icome families, including seasonal expenses like air cooling systems and winter heating bills. The local LIHEAP office is the first point of contact for those in need of energy or utility assistance. Eligibility varies from state to state.
WAP: Weatherization Assistance Program
The WAP is a federal grant organized by the Department of Energy that helps needy families improve their homes’ energy efficiency, and has assisted over 7 million households across many states, territories and Native American tribes since its inception in 1976.
According to the DOE guidelines, a household with anyone over 60 is eligible for the WAP, as are legally recognized disabled people. Most states make families with children eligible, and the website for the WAPTAC (Weatherization Assistance Program Technical Assistance Center) can advise others if the grants are available in their area, and whether they qualify.
LifeLine Assistance: Free Cell Phones
Americans in need of a cell phone plan but without the means to maintain one can get assistance from LifeLine Assistance‘s free phone program. This is indeed a lifeline as daily life and business in particular is practically impossible without a mobile phone.
LLA is an FCC mandated scheme offering a free cell phone with at least 250 monthly minutes included. It’s available in the 49 states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico, and typically requires a household income below 135% of Federal Poverty guidelines. For some states it is below 150%. Eligibility varies across participating states, with slightly different rules around qualifying income.
Other sources of help are available at state government level, or many national and local non-profit and charity organizations, and the energy companies themselves.
How to get Food For Free?
It doesn’t always require money to eat, and there are many ways to gain free food without adding to your debts or joining the 10% of Americans who have resorted to shoplifting. Ask people you know, or traders and restaurant and store owners.
Above all it’s important to explain why you are asking for food: because you can’t afford to eat. And not to be critical about what food you eat. Without a certain amount of money, there is no longer the choice of what to eat. So meat may become harder to get or if meat’s all that’s on offer and you are a vegetarian, it’s best to accept it with thanks.
Grow Your Own, Share With The Community
The most sustainable – and satisfying – way to provide free food for yourself is to grow it, and you can start with just seeds if you live in the country or with just a small space in the city. Guerrilla gardening is an interesting urban option, more organised community gardens and allotments can share space and expertise for growing, and seed swapping communities among gardeners are a good source of materials and encouragement.
Ask A Farmer
Out in the sticks there won’t be the option of stores and restaurants as a source of food, but ask any farmer and there’ll be some left on the fields that they didn’t or can’t sell. Many will let you pick these leftovers.
A rapidly growing movement in the United Kingdom and US is the organized and charitable distribution of food to those who can’t afford it. Most of the food is donated, and food banks are one of the easiest ways to obtain some nutritious food. Many banks have conditions for who they can give food to, but there is no need to be ashamed about visiting one.
Links to Food Banks in various countries
Offers and coupons
Online and direct from the stores, many coupons are available to promote new products. And companies across the United States send out free samples of new products. They’re unlikely to provide a healthy, balanced diet on their own but could supplement free food from other sources.
In an affluent country there is an abundance of unsold or waste food, and a little social interaction and resourcefulness can unlock access to a surprising amount of it.
Ask at the market
Often around closing time, stall holders will sell off any remaining stock for next to nothing, and it’s always worth telling them you have no money and asking if they’ll give you something for free. You can often pick up some fruit or salad, and if they can’t offer anything, thank them anyway and ask at another stall.
Free Supermarket Food
Ask at the big stores and you’ll be too far down the chain of command: “My boss doesn’t allow us to do that” will be the usual answer. So smaller supermarkets and neighborhood stores are a better option, where you can talk to that boss. You may find warmth and generosity among Muslims and immigrants to the West who run stores.
It requires some patience, a little nerve and a bit of practice, but it’s possible to get free, professionally prepared food, even a table to sit and eat it at. Restaurant districts in cities are obviously the best place to try this, and expect a success rate around 5%, so it requires persistence, but will sharpen your bargaining skills, and who knows where else that could lead?
Turn up at a restaurant after the busiest time but not too late, and explain that you have no money and ask if they have some left overs in the kitchen. It can help to have a container such as a plastic box ready in case they do have something, and if they’re friendly and can’t offer anything the first time, maybe they can put something aside the next day.
Searching and Foraging
It grows on trees, on the ground and some seasons there’ll be abundant fruit and tasty plants such as dandelions or chickweed. Even cities can produce some tasty wild food, and anyone near downtown Seattle has access to America’s first Food Forest in a major city.
Growing media coverage of the colossal food wastage at supermarkets and restaurants has made it much less weird, and more popular, to search through the dumpsters in search of some quality food to turn into a meal.
Currently in the Military. Just received a call about family matters back home which I am currently stationed overseas. Military won’t pay for my plane ticket due to the fact it isn’t job related. I haven’t seen my family in over 2 years. My plane ticket is 568$ but it keeps going up by the day. I used a lot of my money due to the fact I had to move off base, which means I had to buy my own appliances. I am stationed in the United Kingdom, so things such as appliances, food, etc, is very expensive here. So please, if anyone can help me or willing to donate some money, I would greatly appreciate it. Family is very important to me, and someone helping me get home in a time like this would mean the world to me. Right now I’m trying to apply for loans but it’s really hard especially being in the UK. It’s a long process and I need to be home as soon as possible. Not only would I use the money to pay for my ticket home but to help my family as well. So please, if anyone is willing to donate some money, that would be great. I don’t ever ask for money, and doing so really tears me down cause I know its your own money that you worked for. So I’m sorry that I am asking for it. Thank you doesn’t describe how much it would mean to me for this. So please, help me if you can, if not, it’s ok too, but please pray for me and my family and keep us in your thoughts.
My paypal is PayPal.me/jamesgill2525
Please email me if you need to, and if you do email me due to the fact of prayers and donations, I will instantly reply as soon as possible. Thank you again everyone.
My name is Kelly. I’m married and have three kids. For the past 2 ½ months, we’ve been struggling financially, but this past month has really hurt. We have a son in college and two other children in high school. Recently, our oldest said he needed money for some online books at college, but we can’t even buy them. We have never been in the position we are right now.
My husband’s hours were cut a couple months ago, but then almost a month ago he was laid off. He’s been looking (and started looking when his hours were cut) and applying to multiple jobs without callbacks or offers. Not only can we not pay for our son’s college books, but we’re not able to pay our rent, electric bill, and we’re overdrawn in our checking account by just under $1300. We don’t have anyone to ask or even help us and the fact that I’m not able to work right now (medical reasons) doesn’t even help.
I’m asking for your help as my very last resort. I’m hoping to raise $3200 to cover our overdrawn bank account, our $1200 rent, my son’s college books, and to buy some food. We’ve applied for food assistance, but everything takes time and they have yet to make a determination.
We are unable to take out a loan because we’re currently not working. If you can give anything, we would be incredibly grateful. We just want to put some food on the table, keep a roof over our heads, and get the books for our son. We have cashed in every can and bottle and counted every coin in our house just to have milk and cereal, but we truly have reached the end. We no longer know what to do and as embarrassing as it is for us to ask, we are asking.
To anyone that can help or has taken the time to read this, Thank You & God Bless!
I moved down to Texas because I thought it would be easier. I don’t think my life has been an easy one, and it is hard to come to the terms with how I’ve resorted to begging. I’m working two jobs in order to save money to get out of Texas and back to Washington.
I feel like I am going no where fast and the town I am living in is a sinkhole. I work two jobs, I am twenty years old and didn’t start working until I was eighteen. I feel like I was very sheltered from the beginning, we have moved from place to place, sometimes I’d only have been in school for weeks at a time and then we’d move. This lead me to dropping out of high school. I used to be a straight A student, honor roll, I was going places.
I don’t feel like I have the support group I thought I’d have when I came to Texas with my dad. I’m not even living with him, I’m living with my ex-stepmother. The household is so toxic and I feel like it’s tearing away at my mentality, I hate who I have become here. I feel like I am going to die in this town and I want to get out.
This is the same town my uncle lives in. He molested me when I was 11, and groomed and raped my younger sister all her life. I came out about it years ago when I was 16, and no one believed our uncle would do such a thing, and my sister was too scared to speak up, she denied everything. So for years up until this last year, I was treated like a vile freak, a black sheep, and it broke me, I love my family but I hate them so much.
I don’t know why I came down here. But I want to get away and I don’t know where to start, I’m trying to save but I’m already paying on vet bills and hospital bills. During summer I got really ill while working as a carhop at sonic, and it got to where I could not move without my muscles locking up, I’d work 13 hour shifts and at the end of the night I’d just cry. We make four dollars an hour so I’d try and work as hard as I can to make it worth it, but all it got me was a 3k hospital bill, they had to pump me with bags of saline, if I hadn’t gone to the ER after my shift I would have died or gone into a coma.
So now on top of my bills I’m trying to relocate, I don’t think I can take another year here. I believe going back to Washington will be better, I have supportive friends and family up there, and I already have accommodations for living set up, all I need to do is get there and right now, I am utterly lost. I’m still working at both sonic and my cashier job. But I need help, I’m going to sell my violin and best clothes and see where that gets me but it won’t be enough.
If anyone out there is willing to help. And know more about my story, I am here. And I’ll appreciate it more than anyone could possibly know. Writing this I feel a little hope, that I can make it out, but I need help.
Not with the hospital bills but getting OUT. I need to get out of Texas, I’m going to Washington because I have a support group up there and the minimum wage is higher up there I can save more and pay off my bills slowly but steadily.
I am trying to at least save up 1,000 to 2,000, for three months rent, and down payment, as well as air fare for my disabled emotional support pet and the last of her vet bill for her leg amputation.
My name is Michael.
I am 53 and i am divorced.
I have one daughter.
Here is my story:
My ex wife cheated on me with a rich guy.
So of course i got divorced.
I left my house in the Netherlands and went to the usa.
I got a new girlfriend, but she was addicted to a various kind of drugs, and she pretty much ripped me of with loads of excuses. So that was not a success. I went back to my country and lived alone for a year. My daughter at that time was 16.
The new friend of my ex wife had beaten my daughter. So what i did was i phoned him.
He laughed at me and put down the phone.
So what i did next was writing him an email.
Because of this email the police came to arrest me and i had to pay him a 4400 dollars and i was sentenced for 2 years in jail if i would do something to him within 2 years.
My daughter was angry at me for almost 2 years because i didn’t hurt the guy.
Well, i tried to explain her that this was and is no option. But i understand her feelings. It also still hurts me. Anyway.
After a year alone i met a lady in the easter side of my country.
I moved in with her. She has 2 sons. By that time neither she or me had money. I found a job in her place and i am still working there.
There is where all the misery starts again.
After 6 months working and living with her i discovered that she was a gamble addicted person.
When i confronted her with this she stopped our relationship. I was heartbroken because i had no place to go, my money was gone, i couldn’t support my daughter who was living at her own in a small chamber 120 miles away from me, i have no friends or family, and on top of that i got sick. I still had not a contract from my boss, and 1 week after she stopped our relationship my boss fired me. With my sickness and pain because of it, i had to find a new job and i did.
I lived in a shelter for homeless people for 6 months. Between drugs and alcohol addicts. I was the only one who was working. Then suddenly my ex girlfriend came to the shelter and asked me crying to come back.
So i did. I thought at that time that everybody deserves a 2th chance.
After a few months everything seemed to be perfect. Then at this certain day she asked me to put my money in a bank account which we could both use.
Well i did. At first there was no problem but because i needed a car i asked the bank for a loan.
That money was in no time gone.
When i asked her about this, she said: if you do t trust me…yme…you can go back to your shelter.
And thats what i did.
I was fired again, and found a new job directly after i was fired. But i had and still have debts.
I couldn’t give my daughter a xmas present and also nothing for her birthday. I go with my bike in every kind of weather 40 miles to my job. I have to pay tax back because they made a mistake because they didn’t inform me well.
I have to pay insurance for healthcare which am behind…and a few more things.
Long story short: if i can pay my debts which are in total without the loan 4000 US dollars, the i can have my life back.
What i have written here is really nothing compared to all what i have been trough.
My physical shape is now better, but i still have daily a lot of nerve pains.
Besides that i am not longer capable to get into a relationship because of other physical issues.
I cant get a loan at this time because i have no contract. That would take another 1.5 years.
I cant take that anymore.
Am fighting and fighting, but mentally i get very tired. I didn’t seen my daughter now for 1.5 years. She uses whatsapp once in a half year to check on me. It breaks my heart. I need really really your support to pay my debts and find a place for myself.
I hope you can understand what am going trough.
I even want to pay you back later.
Thank you for your time.
Hello, everyone my name is alisha and I am 18 years old. I’m looking for someone to help donate towards helping young lives, I had a very hard life growing up we have always been struggling to get through the day and homelessness is a big big problem here in the UK.
That’s why I am here today because I would like you lovely people to help me and donate toward helping young lives have a chance, especially to help them get a place to live I don’t expect you to understand if you have never been in a similar situation, but , if you have you would understand that it is no laughing matter and the UK is a very cold place so it gets unbearable at certain times of the year and young children cannot cope with the weather situations, its so sad how you can expect a child to sleep in the freezing cold night on the streets so please help them today by donating , even if its only a small amount its always going to help at the end of the day.
It would also be a lovely opportunity if we was to be able to get enough donations to take these lovely kids for a small holiday away from the cold for a sun filled fun weekend to help take their little magical minds off of the pain and suffering they have to endure on a daily basis.
I really hope you understand how serious this matter is and that you could help us today today, you would make a lot of lives much better and you will be able to live with the fact of knowing you potentially saved children’s lives by helping them get food and a place to sleep for the night and warmer clothes and much more of the necessities that they need to get through the day and night you could be the person to fix that for them if you just donate today towards our campaign for young lives matter it would be a lovely opportunity for you to feel good about helping others and the best opportunity for them to get off of these freezing cold harsh winter streets.
If you have a heart and understand what these young children are going through please please please do not hesitate to donate to us here’s the link to do so down below
My boyfriend and I are trying to start our life with no help from our families. For the past 3 years my boyfriend has attended college at UNOH and held down several jobs. He will be graduating in June and we have no savings and have been worrying and stressing this whole time. The money he makes working at O’Reilly isn’t enough. We get paid every other week and every time after paying the bills and putting gas money back we only have about $20 left and we use that for food because we go days without being able to eat, so once we have some money left over we want food. Once he graduates we have to leave our town and start our own life, but without any type of savings or help from our parents its been impossible to be able to live normally. Being able to have at least an extra $200 a week would be perfect and we could actually pay our bills and afford rent at least. I’m asking please for your understanding that we are trying to graduate college and make it on own because our parents see college as a waste and wont help or show any type of understanding that we don’t make enough money. They actually seem disappointed in us and resentful. My boyfriend goes to school Monday thru Thursday and works Friday to Sunday so getting a second job isn’t even possible. Please help us even just being able to have extra money to get some food would be greatly appreciated. My boyfriend doesn’t know i’m asking for help and would probably be very upset that I did but I cant stand seeing him like this and living like this. We have no hope any more and no help. Any amount of money will help us out greatly right now. paypal.me/123broken123
Growing up, I was always taught to put the needs of others above my own. When my brother moved in to my home after his wife left him with a 2 year old and a 4 year old, I dropped everything I was doing to help raise his 2 kids, including dropping out of school to get my degree. All of my money went to helping buy food and clothing, fulfilling their basic needs. They are both now adults, but the state of my current financial situation has a lot to do with making the choice to help with their situation. I would never tell them that, but it is the harsh truth.
Four years later, when my sister went to jail for drug possession (she was using crack cocaine) and her baby of 8 months was left without a mother, I took the baby in and raised her as my own, doing everything I could to stay afloat with a 6 year old, an 8 year old and an infant. My sister was in and out of jail for 5 years, and as far as that little girl knew, I was her mother. When she was taken away from me after 5 years, it broke my heart, but taking care of her was one of the greatest joys of my life.
I have been struggling financially for a long time, and now, many, many years later, I have no savings. I have no 401(k). And I have ruined my credit. I have nothing. I broke my leg 2 years ago (I have a titanium rod in my lower right leg, screws and a metal plate over my right ankle). Healing took much longer than expected, and I was out of work for quite some time. Prior to that, I had maxed out my credit cards and had taken out several personal loans to try to juggle all of my bills, which (I know now) was not the right way to try to fix my financial problems. I should have gotten help. I should have gone to a financial advisor or gotten educated somehow. I was just so afraid of being judged. And I had no idea I was going to break my leg. Now, everything is coming to a head and I am being threatened to be sued by my creditors. I lost my job 3 months ago, and I feel like the world is crumbling down over my shoulders.
I. NEED. HELP.
Total Credit Card Debt: $12,600
Total Personal Loans Past Due: $11,000 and $7,500
Other bills monthly (car, insurance, utilities): Approx. Total $800
It is so difficult for me to reach out and ask for help. Writing this is the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do. I know how hard it is to work for your money, and I know that many of you have worked so hard to earn what you have, so for me to ask you to give me your money is unfair, I know. But I ask that if you are fortunate to be able to afford to help others, that you please consider my story. All I can do is promise to pay it forward. When I am able to find a job, I promise to help someone else financially with whatever I am able to afford. If I cannot help someone financially, then I promise to help as many people as I can in other ways – donations of clothing, my time, whatever I can. It’s people who are open and nonjudgemental and give to others of themselves, that make humanity truly special.
If you cannot help me financially, I thank you for reading my story and ask only that you pray for me to find a way out of this hole and this darkness that feels like will never end. I hope that you all are at a place in your lives where you are happy and healthy, and if you are not and are struggling like me, please know that you are not alone. Hopefully things will get better for us. We just have to keep faith that we will all find the help that we need, whatever that may be.
A good friend was gracious enough to let my son Richie (pictured), sister, and me stay at her place for a few months with rent while I looked for a job and a place for us to stay after falling on hard times. It’s been a long and arduous journey, but as it turns out I am in the midst of obtaining a job. We also found an apartment at the same time. My sister and I have paid the holding and app fee required; we also have $1,150 saved for the security deposit and first month of rent saved through her job, as well as us selling personal effects.
The thing is that I won’t start my job in time to get paid by the move in date which is February 1, 2018 and my sister’s next check comes in a week later. The total for the security deposit and first month’s rent comes to a total of $1,902, of which we have a majority collected. Richie is 6 years old and autistic, and we need a place for him to be stable and happy. If it were anything else I wouldn’t be here but I’m on my last legs and have nowhere else to turn. We’re not getting anything big or lavish, it’s a one bedroom apartment with the room going to my son, and my sister and I each taking the living room and dining room areas.
We found the apartment after a difficult and disheartening search through website after website of “affordable” apartments and houses for rent. We started out hoping to split the rent of 3 bedroom houses with another friend, however the search turned up fruitless as none of us were making enough to even come close to the required beginning payments. Later we had decided a 2 bedroom would be more realistic, and yet again we were met with application denials which are non-refundable and were eating away at what we were trying to save. A friend of mine let me know the apartments she is living in had openings. It turns out, that the apartments are the exact ones my sister and I lived in with our other siblings and mom once upon a time as children. Seeing this, we jumped on the opportunity since we already know the area and what schools I can send Richie to in order for him to continue to learn and grow.
My friend is heading off for deployment in a month and plans on renting her guest room out to a coworker as a pet sitter since they will be able to stay longer and pay more. With only a week before we have to get the money in, and before we have nowhere to go I am hoping that we can obtain the final $750. Again, if it were just me I wouldn’t be here, but above anything comes my son.
Hello, I am 19 years old and currently in a really tight spot. I am due in about a month and my fiancé and I literally don’t have any money. We’ve been working hard and trying to find jobs that pay well but I haven’t been able to work much throughout this pregnant due to complications. My fiancé doesn’t even make over $2000 a month and we live in the california bay area, so that isn’t nearly enough to get a place with. Our car recently broke down, and now my fiancé doesn’t have a way to get to and from work. And now, i don’t have transportation in case I go into labor or there’s some sort of emergency. Luckily, he has job leads right now that will increase our monthly income and once I start working again, we can get back on our feet. But we don’t have much time to save; my parents have given us until April to save money and find a place until we need to move out. I am due 2/27, there’s literally no way we can save enough money in time. My grandma loaned us $2000 to buy a car, and is charging us 6% interest every month until we can pay her back. But we want to pay that off as soon as we can so the interest doesn’t start adding up.
I would like to go to school to get my phlebotomy certificate sometime this year. There’s a 10 week course offered at my community college, I am beginning to apply for scholarships and grants but I don’t know if i will qualify, or if it will cover the entire cost (which is about $3500).
However school is not a necessity right now. Right now, we need money to pay back the loan, and a few thousand to move out when my fiancé can find a stable, decent paying job.
Thank you very much for reading, take care!
Hello. My name is Michael. I am in a real bind. I am disabled and on a very small monthly disability income. This income just barely pays the rent. I have had to resort to using credit cards to make monthly payments on my bills. All of the credit cards are Maxed out and the accounts are all closed. But this is of no help. I still have to pay what is owed and those amounts are way beyond my capabilities. My bank account is now over ninety dollars in the ‘Red’ and not a thing I can do except watch it continue to go deeper and deeper into the ‘Red’.
I am also two payments behind on my Internet bill. If I lose my Internet, I also lose my landline phone as it is an Internet phone. I long ago gave up my cable television service, as that was a luxury that I just could not afford. I now have over-the-air television. Naturally the signal comes and goes. Not very reliable, but I suppose better than nothing.
I do have a partner who helps out when he is able with what little he has. It helps a bit but not enough to pay off all these debts. The debts just continue to go higher and higher with end in sight.
I am not in the habit of begging but I have had to lower my standards and swallow my pride and come here to this site to ‘Beg’ for help in any amount. Every little bit will help. I ask that you give only what you can reasonably afford. I will not ask for a certain minimum as I do not know what would be proper here.
Among the financial problems that I have, I also have type 2 diabetes and heart disease, so with all that, it is difficult for me to do much of anything as far as work outside of the home. I have tried for countless years to find a work from home business but one problem there is that all the opportunities ask for money that again I cannot afford or they require experience that I do not possess.
I do not even qualify for government grants. And I have tried for loans, but both my income and credit scores are so low, that I am ‘shown the back door’. Haha.
Thanks for reading my story and plight.

Honestly I don’t know were to begin, I’ve sat here for a few hours nervously pondering the idea of writing this letter. I’m looking for financial help for my family and I. I’m in my late 30’s, father of four , married and until today employed. The past couple of years have been a struggle for me and my career. I’m a Marine combat veteran, two tours of duty in Iraq, as well three tours supporting troops as a contractor. Shortly after my last deployment my health deteriorated , eventually being life-flighted on thanksgiving 2013. Since then its been a constant struggle to find a balance of medications and life in general. Over the years we’ve managed to afford those medications and shots as needed for me to continue to enjoy a career and family with the new health restrictions. For now the health issues are not covered by the VA, nor can any company be sued for medical issues since there are cases in court waiting on rulings to give a direction who is responsible for the toxins that caused such respiratory diseases.
Over the years I’ve found ways to cope the best I could, certain medications help give some what normal life. I’ve made changes to my career to ensure I could continue to provide for my family. My wife has stepped up and took care of certain things around the house I can no longer do. She works a full time job, goes to school and makes sure our household is running smoothly. Over the years we’ve struggled to keep up with co-pays and other cost associated with high cost shots and care needed. The past two years has really has been over bearing trying to keep up, we officially couldn’t. We pay little here and there when we could, chip away little by little.
The past few months have really hit the family hard, I stopped taking my medications, no longer could afford them nor the payments to the doctors. We live on the east coast , since the Hurricane our lives have been effected . Our home was fine, damaged here and there, but the real toll was on my job. Little work and smaller paychecks, we struggled, tightened our belts, slashing unnecessary spending, just waiting till things got back to normal. Then today I was let go, work never got back to normal, they finally downsized our staff.
So here I am rambling on about myself and my struggles. My wife is my rock, she and I were just dating when I got sick. She moved in and took care of me. It kills me that my medical debt looms over our heads and now the added stress of me being out of work is added. I’ve hit the payment hard looking for another job, but being limited, its limits what I can apply for. I’m hoping to find some relief for my family and keep afloat. I haven’t been able to get my shots for months, figured everything would stabilize, “ I’ll get next month” never came. I don’t know how much to ask for, I’m stubborn and proud, medical bills $15,000 give or take a few dollars. To keep a float possibly just $2,500. It would give us a month and a half cushion and allow me to get back on shots. If I can keep afloat and not stress my wife out that’s fantastic, medical debt more of a wish. Anything would help, if you read this letter thank you.
Hello and Happy Wednesday. I am a single mother who has been in and out the Hospital. I have accumulated a lot of tickets, flags, car damage (some do to other drivers, some just regular car troubles) that I can not afford with my pay. I have been struggling since I’ve had my baby girl last April 2018. A birthing that almost took both our lives and kept us in the. Hospital for a week. My tickets and red flags are ridiculous and so are my prices to get car fixed. If I don’t get my car fixed, tickets and red flags paid I won’t pass inspections. If I can’t get my license and registration renewed and my tickets/ fines paid off, they’ll take my car. I have a 9 month old baby. I NEED my car for me to get to and from work, Hospital and Daycare. I’m trying and it seems no matter how hard I try my life just hasn’t gotten any better. It’s way deeper than near death or car troubles. I’m financially struggling with hospital bills and loans that my mother set me up with. That she refuses to help because her words, “You need to suffer.” I’ve gone thru so much suffering. I’m Trying to move my daughter and I out by the spring because my parents said they no longer want their space being taking up and that’s Understandable but with me paying school loan, car note, and other bills I can’t even fathom what to do. I even BEGGED them help me with tuition for schooling to become a CNA and hopefully a GNA, If I pass state test. My job even reimburses 50% Of tuition. Because I want to work at a senior citizens home. I LOVE Senior Citizens and use to volunteer all through middle school and some in HighSchool. I want to make it in life and succeed but I can’t seem to catch a break ANYWHERE.
I guess I’m looking for ANY type of help Car, Loans, Bills. I’m young but not too young to not know that I’ve made many wrong decisions financially, took the wrong advice and trusted the wrong people. I am trying to get my life in check because it’s not just me anymore. I am VERY responsible with hand wringing money financially now but with my pay it isn’t enough. I am a go getter and a fighter but even the strong fall and need help sometimes. I thank EVERYONE who decides to help us. Have a great day. If you decide, I provided my paypal and my CashApp. Thank you all so much again.
Also I can send pictures of everything that I have explained if necessary because I am an honest woman.
cash app: $Thickbags
Where to begin? I joined the Navy as a young man at 20. Deployed 3 times. I didn’t deploy like the typical sailors. I stood duty in hazard areas on land in the middle east as well as took part in countless humanitarian efforts in the western pacific. I served honorably and have my DD214 to prove it.
I got out in 2013 and it’s been hell ever since. I decided to go back to college using the GI Bill that I earned. My first year went well. The VA paid my living stipend on time and paid my school on time. Then my third semester everything took a dive. The VA went three months without paying me my living stipend. I was living in the city of Chicago, going to DePaul University, and relying on those benefits. No one cared.
desperate to find a job fast, I fell into a predatory trap with Ubers car leasing program and took a job driving uber. The car note was astronomically high. So high that I was LOSING money while working. I had to drop classes after the drop date. Got Ws and the VA requires me to pay back all the money they paid the school for the classes I dropped even though I was in a hardship and provided documentation to prove it.
My whole world was turned upside down. I got out of the military into the civilian word without any idea as to how to really do anything. The military actually does shy you away a bit from “real world” responsibilities. This downward spiral the VA put me in by not paying me on time (the bills don’t ever stop), ended friendships, damaged family relationships, etc. I’ve been suicidal since getting out bc it seems no one cares about me…about us….
I don’t know if anyone is even still reading this or even cares or is thinking to themselves, “man this guy needs to pull himself up by his boot straps and get over it.” Trust me if I could I would. I’m in such a burying amount of debt due to poor past decisions growing up and making mistakes that as an adult now I just see darkness and no light.
I had to drop out of school and have had one odd shitty job after the other. No one wants to hire me even though my resume is stacked with various qualifications. They don’t want to hire me bc of my employment gap….even though a large portion of my history was military. Amazon wouldn’t even hire me bc of my gap history and I was a rated navy LOGISTICS specialist.
Anyway, everyone is always talking about how much they love our veterans-I hate even pulling the card-and how much they disagree with how we’re treated when we come home. And here I am, begging for some financial help from strangers on the internet. And I do need the help. God bless and thanks for hearing. There’s WAY more to tell. I don’t even have a number to ask for. Anything helps at this point. I want to start a family and be the man I know I can be. I just need a leg up.
Dear Readers, forgive me for the sob story I’m about to tell, but I am pretty much destitute at this point, but I’m going up to bat here, praying to hit the miracle home run.
I’ve always been taught to do the right thing, in spite of parental contradictions on their own behavior.
I did grow up with violence in my household, so my archetype is pretty much the “rescuer”. While I have worked hard for the money, and have enjoyed earlier successes, I bear in mind that my grandparents were business and community oriented people with a corporate social responsibility to those whom they serve: the local people in the community.
In 2017, just a year shy before graduating from the local university with my second Masters Degree (the MBA this time; prior to that, I received my Masters in Information Systems Engineering, and I took that after sequestration put me out of any possibility of any financial recovery after my Federal Government contract suddenly disappeared due to a reduction in force by the US Navy) I lost a good caregiver / chauffeur job, as the client was rapidly dealing with deteriorating health, requiring advanced care I had no certification for. I bit the bullet, and took a job in the insurance industry as an agent with a Health and Accidental Certificate. As much as I loved the job and worked my butt off trying to make the commission, I only made one commission, was never paid for actually working the hours, spent LOTS of money on fuel, and other things required of agents in the field. I thought working for a brokerage would be better served as opposed to working for a supplemental insurance company, and the brokerage was local. Unfortunately, same issue, I worked my butt off, but only got one important sale (Medicare, and a plan F, to which one of my bosses gave me a personal check in lieu of a commission check, and unless I fight it in court, it looks like this is the only check I’ll ever see) I found another place to work, yes, another insurance company, but they assured me I would get paid hourly. Unfortunately, the background check, even though it was great, I needed certain criteria up to date, such as bills, car insurance, et al., and they wanted a different license for certification. Technically, still with this company, but I can’t seem to pass the exam, and I cannot afford the classes to get the certification (as an alternate to me going to the exam center and taking the exam)
The first year in the apartment had a few repair issues, the major one being the oven smoking terribly due to a grease drip into a pan near the grill that is sealed shut. It didn’t get repaired until after Christmas, and even then, my friend and I had to literally take a screwdriver to the sealed drip pan, clean it and put it back together. (3 technicians called on this, with the 3rd one telling us how to get under the drip pan area to clean it)
At the start of November in 2018, a friend of mine was a victim of domestic violence, and not wanting her to deal with this ex-friend killing her, as he loved to test the firing pin of his assault rifle by aiming the gun at the wall, just near enough to my friend’s head that she could feel the air from the volley hitting her face, and told her to stay with me for the holidays. (Side note: this man comes from a politically “affluent family”; gun enthusiast, and former convicted felon, who feels he is above the law, to the point of actually taking a bulldozer to my friend’s personal effects after he thew her out, even after local law enforcement told him “don’t touch anything of hers”. I actually got to see what the barrel of an AR-15 looks like “as a joke”, as he pointed it at my face to startle me, while he was stoned out of his head, and telling me it wasn’t loaded, on New Year’s Day 2018)
I wish I could say the holidays went by smoothly, but a neighbor whom we entrusted initially, decided to give my friend a very hard time, causing 3 written notices by the HOA, that we managed to get cleared, but the damage had been done.
I plan on fighting the eviction, as there are mold and electrical issues the landlord knew about and require fixing. (Due to a storm a few weeks ago) Rather than fix them while I live here, he just wants to sweep it under the rug, and I feeo he is so wrong in doing so.
In the meantime, Urgent Emergency Funding Issues!
What I need for the legal defense: Currently, the landlord wants $13,000. Landlord is currently suing me as well, but I haven’t seen what his additional reasons are for.
contributions for legal fees – Legal Aid consult starts at $35.00, and who knows what they want after that.
contributions for gasoline – currently $12 per trip to the courthouse and back to home at $3.00 gallon
contributions for the dog’s healthcare issues: My dog, who is also my registered emotional & medical support dog (as he helps with diabetic episodes in low blood sugar) A 10lb bag of food runs around $30 – $40, and he needs a new vest, which runs in the $70 range.
Contributions for my car: I have a $2800 payment left on it that I’d like to rid of so I can have a clear title. Also, I need $260 for the car registration and the smog test certificate, I require 4 new tires as the others are pretty much going bald ($400 – $550 for a set, plus mounting and balancing, and an oil change, fuel and oil filters and I use synthetic oil since my car is high mileage in the triple digit region. ($75) When one’s an agent, you need the car to get to your customers!
Contributions for work-related items: I’ve lost a lot of weight! Clothes are at least 5 inches off the body now, and my last belt is about to break from tightening it as much as I could to hold my pants up. Between that and certifications I need to keep up with, I’d say $1000 out of my own pocket.
I could really use some assistance! Help Me, Anyone!… you are my only hope!
