I am a 46-year-old woman living in North Carolina. For work, I am a caregiver for an elderly couple in their nineties. I help them with their daily activities and overall, it is rewarding. I am also a notary public.

Today, I’m reaching out to the community, friends and family members for a little help during a challenging time in my son’s Christian life. Christian is 25 yr old and has work since he was 16 yrs old. Unfortunately as of August 2023 due to making $1700 a month his medical insurance was cut of leaving Christian with lots of medical issues that well not resolve. Christian kept working until Sunday may 26, 2024 that I had to drive him to the hospital and they send him home without finding the cause of his medical symptoms which were not being able to swallow not even his saliva, chest pain, and muscle ticks that attack him every 5 to 10 minutes to the point of him kneeling to the floor more often if he is under anxiety or panic attacks. Up to now Christian is not able to sleep well has trouble even getting liquid in even his saliva and can not eat. My son was placed on FMLA which means medical leave for 12 weeks that is 3 months without pay. Unfortunately he his not entitled to get unemployment so how is he suppose to pay his $900 rent, light, gas bill and food. I can provided food and help him but I can’t afford to maintain all his bills . I am struggling to get insurance for him so we can know the underlying causes to all his medical problem he going thru. It hurts to see him like this when he has always been a hard working son attending college luckily he is on break till fall if he doesn’t get better will have to drop his classes for now. Hi my name is Dawn we are a family of three that was doing ok until my Husband had to have immediate surgery and he was the only one working and sole provider and made ok money to do that I have a disability so I can’t work and I homeschool our son my issue now he had surgery 2 months ago and is not healing properly its going to take much longer than 4 total months to heal and last week he went back for a scan and they found lesions on his thyroid that will be biopsy on the 6th June that could be a whole other problem we have gone through any savings we had that’s now gone and we have rent, food, lights, gas, groceries, car repairs, car payments, I never thought we would ever be in a situation that hit us so fast without any warning if I don’t get rent caught up we will be homeless that’s my worst fear, my husband can’t get out of bed by himself yet and we are just in our early 50’s so I really hope I can turn this around I don’t want to ever loose my son also this is just a very scary situation for us not knowing what is going to happen I have never heard of a website like this but it would be a Godsend if I could get any help at all I know I need a little over 9,000 at this point 20.00 would be so very helpful. My name is Steve. I’m a 31 year old man and I messed up. Really bad and I don’t know how to get out of this.

A little background for context. I used to bartend and a very large and popular nightclub in a major city for many years. From 2011 to 2019. In that time, I got hooked on some extracurricular activities, if you know what I mean. It got so bad at one point that I was spending between 400 and 600 dollars a night to satisfy my need. That was never a problem for me as I was making about 1,000 a night. But after I stopped working at the nightclub and moved out of state, I realized I was over that life. Got a clean start. Started a new job, bought a house, adopted a dog, and met my partner. Life was going great. I didn’t even think of my old life for years. But Tragedy was just up the road.

In January of last year (2023), I got laid off from my corporate job as many others did. And struggled to find work. In order to make end meet, I started doing gig jobs and ridesharing. The downside to these jobs was I had to travel back to the major city I used to live. At first, I was able to ignore the temptations from my past life. Ridesharing all night long over the weekends was truly overwhelming.

But alas, the temptations got soo strong about 5 months ago and I gave in. I started small trying to keep it under control. But I lost control. I couldn’t satisfy my urges to the point I was spending more than I was making. Spending our bill money and savings. Lying to my partner about unexpected expenses just to make up an excuse to buy more. I tried walking away so many times. I got a new job and tried to focus all my time and attention into my job so I wouldn’t think about it and move on. But I was already hooked.

It’s soo bad that I ended up “borrowing” money from my work just to buy more. Always able to put the money back before anyone noticed. But that was only sustainable for so long. I’m at a point where I can’t pay it back. And I can’t fix it, I will end up without a job, losing my partner, and maybe in jail.

I don’t know what to do. I need to repay 3500 dollars by tomorrow when the money at work gets collected. I need help. Please someone, anyone. I’m begging for a way out.

     I do not normally reach out and ask people for help but, I have found myself without any other options at this time and don’t know what else to do right now. My father and his twin brother were partners for our family owned business of painting houses. They subcontracted jobs to me and that is how I make my income normally. My uncle just passed away last month very unexpectedly leaving my father emotionally distraught losing his identical twin and business came to a complete halt. The contractor license was in my uncles name. So, my entire source of income has vanished leaving me without any money to pay my rent and bills or survive for that matter. I tried to apply for assistance but because I’m considered self employed I do not qualify for unemployment. I applied for GR but because my rent cost exceeds the amounts they would give they declined my request. I was able to get food stamps but they only give $291 a month and everyone knows that doesn’t go very far nowadays.
Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse I broke down in the middle of an intersection and had to be towed away. The engine in my car seized up and my car had to be junked because it would cost $5000 for a new engine which I didn’t have. So, I reluctantly sold my car to a junk place for $500 which I have used to buy food for my pets and I now only have $50 left in my bank.

    I have lived on my own since I was 16 and have always managed to get by. I find it difficult to ask for help but have found myself in a situation where I have no other choice but to swallow my pride and hope someone is willing to help me. My rent is $1460.00 which I do not have any of. My utilities (phone, power, cable, etc) is about $300 and I have been looking at cheap used cars but it seems like it costs at least $4000-$5000  to buy something that won’t break down right away.
If anyone can help me I would be so greatful and it would literally be a life saver. Rent is only a couple days away and I’m so scared of being evicted with my daughter my four cats and my two dogs who all depend on me and I don’t want to let them down not being able to provide for them.

This is a rather long story, but I’ll try to make it as short as possible.

In 2018, I lived in Coral Springs, Florida.  On Valentine’s Day, there was a shooting at a local high school less than 3 miles from our home. I didn’t know it then, but this would start a domino effect on my mental health.  Because Coral Springs and Parkland are very close in proximity, the majority of the funerals were held in my city.  Our main street is University Drive, there is a funeral home where they had funerals each day for weeks. I was in a fetal position, in bed, for over two weeks; it hit me so hard.

In 2017, I got my bachelor’s degree in biomedical science and had dreams of becoming a PA working for the Veterans Administration Hospital. Unfortunately, my GPA wasn’t high enough, so the next route was to obtain a masters degree to boost my GPA- I have 16 credits to go and have a 3.87 gpa.

Weeks before COVID began,  I started having panic attacks out of nowhere. The program material was challenging, but not really difficult. I decided that I needed to go back into therapy. I looked into several studies that John Hopkins was doing and one of them was a psilocybin research study for deep depression. I called the research office and spoke to a psychiatry intern.  He performed a questionnaire on me. The result was rather surprising, as I was not only suffering from severe depression and ADHD (inattentive type), but the primary diagnosis was bipolar type 2. It was devastating. I was happy that I was able to put a name to all the confusing feelings and thoughts running through me.  I made an appointment with a psychiatrist, and she started me on meds.  The new type of bipolar meds that are out there caused me such horrific limb pain that I was unable to walk.  Eleven combinations of medications, and 4 years later,  I have  been labeled as treatment resistant.  They don’t know how to treat my condition.  I have never shied away from my diagnosis, in fact, during my time as a student, I constantly shared my story in hopes of helping someone else.

My husband and I have been very fortunate, we each run our own businesses. He is a one-man electrical contractor and my previous business was a Permitting consultant in Florida.  We got married in 2011- prior to that I was a single mom.  Owning my own business gave me flexibility for my kid’s needs.

In 2023, I decided that since my kids were older and out of the house, I would follow my dream for a career in healthcare.

I got accepted to a chiropractic program, which I happily started last year. The program is pretty intense so I had to close 90% of my business. I still have very loyal customers that call me when they have issues; in that aspect I’m very blessed.

Earlier this year, my husband was diagnosed with a rather large aortic aneurysm (4.5 cm).  He has been experiencing severe chest pain and shortness of breath, so I finally pushed him to go to his doctor and get a referral for a cardiologist .  When they performed the CT to confirm the size, they found he also has emphysema and nodules (masses) in his lungs . He hasn’t smoked since he was 20. He’s an electrician so he’s always working inside attics . They’re making the assumption that it’s either from fiberglass insulation or asbestos. He’s been in the trade since he was 15 years old and he’s 62 now.

In 2021, we relocated to the Treasure Coast from South Florida. We were looking to slow down our pace of life; we love where we live presently . We took on a fixer-upper and really transformed it into something beautiful.  Late last year, we decided that it was time to sell our home; the kids were no longer living with us and we did not need such a large house.  Unfortunately, because of the market, we have been unable to sell the home. We were looking to obtain enough money to put a healthy down payment for a smaller house with proceeds from the sale and still be able to house ourselves and the puppies.

We have six dogs. Currently, three dogs (Indie, Mylo, and Bailey) are ours, and three others were acquired in different circumstances.

When we still lived in South Florida, we became an active volunteer/donor to a local animal rescue. My husband and I have over 3000 volunteer hours fostering dogs for  another rescue in Virginia. The local rescue had two dogs that were confiscated from a home. The dogs were never inside and were chained to their crates at all times.  They were skinny. They were full of mange, full of fleas and ticks.  No one wanted to take them because they were pit bulls.  We opened our home with the promise that the rescue would cover all of their expenses, including food and medicine. We would foster them for a few months until they could get them a more permanent foster.  Four years later,  we still had them.  The first couple of days, one of the Pitbulls killed our cat; he  has a very strong prey drive.  Though we were heartbroken, we did not give up on Marshall (male) and Piggy (female). Piggy was the most loving dog you could ever imagine, at one point we wanted to keep her, but they grew up together and would start crying if they were not within earshot of each other; we could not separate them. In the meantime, I kept in constant contact with the rescue for placement possibilities, but they had nowhere to put them. I stressed to them that both dogs were living in my office. Of course, we had a huge backyard and they were allowed to frolic and run -we would also walk them twice daily, but because of Marshall’s erratic behavior with other dogs, we had to keep them separate from our dogs.

Fast forward to last year. I came home from school, and my room was covered in blood. I don’t know what occurred, but Marshall viciously attacked Piggy. We had to rush her to the hospital, but they couldn’t save her- the damage was too much. We had to put her down; we still mourn her on a daily basis; as does Marshall.  Even though this happened, we kept Marshall.  He has to be kept separate from the other dogs – he has no problem with people.

At this point, the rescue had ghosted us, even though we never received any help from them.  He’s had two instances of cancer we’ve tried to keep under control. We just want to make him as comfortable as possible during his time left. The other two fosters we have were basically abandoned by their owners. One is a very high anxiety ridden German Shepherd (Jaxx) and the other one is a goofy goldendoodle named Oliver. 

The reason I’m bringing all this up. We are in danger of losing our house due to my husband’s loss of income and health condition.  My giving up my business to start school didn’t help either.  Each month, we struggle to pay the mortgage.  At one point, I was helping my kids with their bills to help them save money for a rainy day , but right now I’m barely making it.

Being homeless is not an option for us. We made a commitment to these dogs and we intend to keep it. We have to keep afloat long enough for the house to sell so we can get another home. 

I am not one  to ask for help, I’m usually the one giving it.  We are in a very desperate situation. I lie awake at night waiting to hear sounds of the tow truck coming to repossess our cars or a notice put on our door that they’ve started foreclosure proceedings. I am so very blessed God has interceded and provided me with jobs from former clients, but drips and drabs doesn’t even touch the amount of debt we are in. We put every penny we had to update the house to attract potential buyers, but in doing that, we have caused ourselves a difficult financial predicament – unfortunately we were unable to predict what would happen with my husband.

Due to rental properties being so expensive, my daughter and my grandchild have been living with us.  Two months ago, he started experiencing seizures 3 to 5 times a day. They don’t know why, they just started out of nowhere.   They are getting worse, but worst of all, he’s become nonverbal; he has no way of communicating with us so he becomes very frustrated.

With everything going on, including my mom being in the last stage of Alzheimer’s, my husband‘s and grandson’s condition, I received a failing grade in 2 courses and was suspended for a semester of school. I will go back in August. To say all this has been heartbreaking is a huge understatement. In the meantime, I have started organizing a mental health campaign on my campus, by establishing peer-to-peer counseling, a gym and sensitivity training for both students and faculty by next semester- a large portion of our student body are veterans.  I’m following through on my promise to myself to destigmatize mental illness. I’ve already started laying the groundwork to work for the Veterans Administration Hospital system.  I will be obtaining different certifications that help with PTSD,  depression, and other types of mental illness to help my patients heal from inside out.

The reason I’m offering my freakin’ life story – we are financially dying , We need a minimum of $30,000, but $50,000 would give us a leg up to get us caught up on everything and keep us afloat for 6 months. I want to trade in my car and get a used Tesla since I’m driving over 200 miles a day to get to school- between the gas,my car payment and insurance it would be a huge savings. I have to keep the house going until we sell it and with Todd not working a full schedule , it’s been very difficult.

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Shauna, and I am reaching out to share my journey with you, in the hope that it resonates with your generosity and understanding. Life has been a series of challenges and growth for me, and I am at a crucial point where your support could truly change the course of my life and the lives of many others.

At 17, I became a mother, marking the start of a journey filled with both joy and hardship. Despite the challenges, I remained committed to providing a stable and loving home for my daughter. My husband and I navigated through 20 years of marriage, raising our children and managing a construction business for 11 of those years. Unfortunately, the business and our marriage did not survive the economic strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a painful chapter of loss and hardship.

Throughout my life, I have faced numerous physical challenges, from a broken back and traumatic brain injuries to a torn Achilles tendon and a broken shin bone. Despite these injuries, I have always strived to remain employed, dedicated, and passionate about my work. I pursued a career in cyber-security, only to find it was not my calling. I then transitioned to massage therapy, which I loved, but lost everything due to a bad choice in roommates.

One of the most harrowing experiences of my life was being held captive for seven days by someone I was trying to help, a situation that ended tragically. This event deepened my commitment to helping others, especially those struggling with addiction. For the past few years, I have been working tirelessly in the recovery community, showing up for those in need and offering support whenever possible.

Recently, I found myself working as an armed security guard for a start-up company. I dedicated myself to this job, only to learn that the owner had no intention of paying me for over 340 hours of work. Despite this setback, my passion for supporting others has never waned. I have completed certification courses to become a peer and family recovery support specialist and am now beginning my observation hours at a place where I feel I can truly flourish.

My dedication to the recovery community stems not only from my personal experiences but also from the challenges faced by my 25-year-old daughter. I am incredibly proud of my other daughter, who is about to graduate from cosmetology school. These accomplishments drive me to continue my work, believing that I can make a significant impact.

However, I am currently facing critical challenges. My vehicle, a 2004 Honda Civic, is unreliable and unsuitable for my job, which requires transporting clients. Recently, my laptop was stolen, hampering my ability to keep up with client notes and progress reports. I am also in urgent need of a stable living situation to ensure my personal and professional success.
