Being a single mother especially in today’s era can be extremely overwhelming. If you are one of those mothers who is doing it alone every day you know what I am talking about. It seems like the bills just continue to pile up and never end.

Researchers have said that just in 2015 year ending alone over 80 percent of the households in America that we’re single households we’re in fact ran by a FEMALE head of household which we’re mostly living very poor.

Many people may say well there is government assistance for them to get a grant but it’s hard to find and information regarding that said topic anywhere. So in hopes to help the single mothers out in the world this article will give you some insight on the different assistance topics we can cover including where and how to get a grant or scholarship. Also, you will read and see how simple it is to receive help with income expenses and medical insurance.

Are there really grants for a single mother?

Of course they do but these grants are not only for single mothers. However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t help for a mother to receive one. I know its mind boggling that the government hasn’t had any means created for money for a single mother that is actually in the shape of a grant. One thing the government does for a single mother is they assist them through a group or have set sponsors through a company, and sometimes they are covered by the actual income assistance completely.

Below are a few websites that will redirect you to free items that you can get just for registering on the website.

Low Income Assistance for Single Mothers / Government Grants

As I said there is not an official grant for a single mother available that is FEDERAL. However a single mother can go through federal programs and register and sign up for them. Those kinds of programs are usually for households with low income. Which means you would also qualify for Welfare. No matter what the case these are programs to help those who make below the limit and live poorly.

Below are different types of assistance based in the United States.

TANF – TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE FOR NEEDY FAMILIES

TANF is a crucial for many low income families located within the US.

With TANF you receive a small amount of cash every month that you can use toward your food, rent, and other necessities. However you only receive TANF for up to 60 month limit.

If you are a single mother and you have children in your home who are less than 19 years old you are eligible for TANF.

SNAP – SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

Food-stamps or SNAP as other people may refer to is financial help for meals. You can receive money every month to place food on the table if you are on low or no income.

For most of Americans living in poverty SNAP is potentially the only assistance they can get.

Research has shown that in 2015 SNAP benefits have helped at least 45 million Americans. Most of the ones who receive the stamps are under are up to the age of 18.

When you go to use your benefits for SNAP you have your own personal debit card to ring your groceries up with at the register. If you are interested in trying to get on with SNAP benefits all you have to do is fill and application out and send it in or take it into a local office that deals with SNAP benefits.

NSLP – NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM

This is a program that gives free (or discounted) food to students whose parent’s income is bellow a poverty level. The income needs to be at least between 130-185 percent bellow the poverty line.

Most the time if a person is a receiver of SNAP benefits their children will be accepted into this program for free lunches. But, that doesn’t mean if you don’t have or receive SNAP that your children are disqualified.

You need to contact your child’s school to apply.

TEFAP – THE EMERGENCY FOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

Food for the American families who are in the poverty range not matter what the age.

If you have received food stamps before or any other program assisting you and helping you such as the ones in this article you could also be approved for this program.

You will need to contact your State distribution agency to learn more about the Emergency food assistance program.

Local Food Banks

A food bank doesn’t exactly fit into the whole “Grant” program area as it is actually a location in your town where you can get food if you are in need.

Do not allow you or your family to go without food. If you ever reach that trouble you can call 211 and ask them where the nearest food bank is based on your location.

More then 200 food banks exist with the feeding america foundation and they supply enough food to feed over 40 million people.

WIC – WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN PROGRAM

This program includes a package deal where you as a mother are able to receive healthy foods, whether you are pregnant or a new mother, and also to children who are 5 or under.

WIC is a program that is temporary and only used for a short amount of time – usually between 6 to 12 months.

EARLY HEAD START / HEAD START

These programs are for children up to 5 years old.

You can receive free child’s medical and dental care along with their schooling, and dietary needs.

Find your closes headstart office on their website or call at 1-866-763-6481.

Insurance for unemployment

This is a special program which will pay you weekly if you are unemployed and it had nothing to do with you for you being fired or let go. You will only be able to receive this benefit for maximum 26 weeks. Different states have different benefit rules. But most states will average out at about 45% of whatever the average weekly income is.

Single mothers who are out of a job temporarily can find solace with these benefits and can help make the burden less for themselves because this pay will restore what you have lost from losing your work.

If you want to try and get this started and opened for you, you will have to find your local unemployment office or apply on the website for this specific program. Most states will allow you to also try to sign up for this over the phone.

Section 8 housing

Section 8 is basically a program that helps a family be able to pay for their housing. If approved you will receive a voucher of up to 70 percent of your bills (utilities and rent). You are expected to pay the other 30 percent.

If you want to apply and feel you qualify you can get in touch with your local office involved with public housing, the HUD office.

CCAP – CHILD CARE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

This is a benefit for families who can’t afford to place their children in daycare while working.

You still have to pay a certain percentage but it isn’t a big lump of money. The less you earn, the less you need to contribute.

EITC – Earned Income Tax Credit

It is a tax benefit for people with low income. You could potentially get as much as $6,000.

If you normally have a tax rate of $1050 but you are allowed $5550 then you get refund of $4500.

There is a Children’s Tax Credit too for as much as $1,000 for EACH child.

LIHEAP – LOW INCOME HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

LIHEAP is a program that is a one time help to help pay for heating / cooling expenses.

Most of the time this is for the disabled or families with children or disabled person in the home.

If you need any extra information regarding this topic you can get in touch through the number 1-866-674-6327 or a local number for your local LIHEAP office.

WAP – WEATHERIZATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

Weatherization assistance program lowers energy bills for families in need. Usually the elderly and families involving children are accepted and put to the top of the list before all.

Your monthly income need to be below 200 percent poverty level.

To apply, find a local WAP center.

Medicaid

Medicaid is help with medical expenses. If you do not have health insurance this gives you certain benefits as long as your income restriction meets the level it should.

A lot of single mothers may meet the standards to be recipients of Medicaid even if you are unemployed.

Every state has different rules about Medicaid plans. You can find out exact requirements on this website.

Together with ObamaCare it ensures that even single mothers who didn’t receive any health benefits will now be able to have coverage.

CHIP – CHILDREN HEALTH INSURANCE

CHIP gives children without health insurance a chance to have health benefits all the way up until they are nineteen. It is for families whose income is too high to receive Medicaid benefits.

It provides every type of benefit you can think of — dental, eye exams, and even annual doctor’s exams.

Every state has its own rules. If you would like to learn a little more about this specific benefit you can call 1-877 Kids now (1-877-543-7669)

Federal Pell Grants

Aid program for students of up to $5,815 for those in need to be able to set foot into college.

This is the best opportunity for a mother who is single to finally be able to finish her schooling and finally continue in the workforce. The money is completely free of charge with no interest rates or paybacks ever.

You need to fill out an application and submit it for a pell grant and have it turned in on or before June 30th of every year.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant

Similar to the Pell Grant. If you already have had pell grants and you are at the top of the charts in need you will be first on the list to receive this. Depending on a persons needs that are wrapped in with their financial struggle will ultimately decide who will receive anywhere between $100 too $4,000 annually.

Charities

Charities can be a way to seek help for you and your children whether you are in need of food or clothing or even housing. A lot of charities around the world actually have their own food banks that they run and they will give you bags of free food.

If you go to salvation army a lot of the times they will let you sleep there if you have no where else to go especially if it is a result of violence.

Churches

Most churches will offer you food and clothes or maybe even a place to stay if you have been recently kicked out by the one you are living with.

To find information on this you should look through your phone books local listing or yellow page. You can also research online and see what churches are available to your area and call them and ask what services they do offer.

Loans

Single moms can receive loans usually relatively quickly but I would not recommended that at all. You could potentially go into debt and not be able to rise back from that.

Sometimes you have no choice because you have to fix your broken car or maybe pay for utilities and food and need the help right then. But you have to be able to pay that loan realistically quick.

Pay attention to your credit because if you try to get a loan through a bank or anyone they will check your credit score and see if it is even available to be able to place a loan out to you. If it is a loan that is for payday loans or credit card advances they will not run a check but you will end up paying more after fees and costs.

Line of Credit

If your credit is decent some people ask a bank for a loan personally. Most of the time this is a better idea then asking for a payday loan because if you need quick money with lower rates of interest this is it.

Personal Loans

On a personal loan interest is lower dramatically but you have to pay in instalments. It doesn’t really fit criteria for an emergency. Normally if you just tell them you do not have any more funds and that is why you need this they will turn you away. If your credit is poor you will not be able to even touch this offer.

Short term (payday) loans

This is a very popular type of loan. You may know it by the term “Cash advance.” The interest runs really high on these and it is a loan that is only for a small time frame.

This is a loan that would more then likely be considered if a problem arises and you needed to repair your car or had a disastrous dental emergency. You have to know for sure you will be able to give every penny back.

If you do not pay this type of loan back you could be in loads of trouble financially.

Credit card cash advance

Do you own a credit card? If so you will be able to get money from a bank as easy as 1, 2, 3. This is not a method that is highly praised though because as soon as you start taking money out of the bank the interest keeps rising and you also are charged for using and pulling out of the bank a fee. This is potentially the easier options if you do need cash asap but you have to pay it back and make sure you absolutely can.

When it is all said and done grants will not solve your money issues within your home if that is what you expect. To get a grant is definitely not easy it isn’t a walk in the park by any means.

If you are looking to get a more stable source of financially being stable you should probably look in areas around you or find a women shelter until you can get back up on your feet.

If you think you have all the time in the world you can apply for other areas of assistance such as Food stamps, HUD, and etc. They do take a lot of time and effort for someone to get back with you and let you know if you have been accepted and enrolled. Try finding a part time working job as a way to financially start becoming stable again.

The moral of this is you can not expect a grant to fall into your hands without effort and take all your worries away. They are only here too do one thing and that doesn’t usually fix anything with your financial setting.

This is all on you and what you decide, no one else can decide for you.

Humbly seeking assistance.

Hello,

I’m just seeking assistance to pay a few bills while I seek a job. I’m currently living with my mom. I sent my kids to stay with her with hopes that I can Doordash and Instacart to get back on my feet in September. Unfortunately, that was short-lived since my mom fell and broke her arm in October so I had to come stay with her. I used my PTO from my full-time job and followed that up with unpaid time off. I’m currently jobeless because my mom fell ill after the surgery to repair her arm. I gave up my car cause I could no longer afford the payments or insurance. I’ve applied for a few work from home jobs which turned out to be scams. The uncertainty is very stressful and I’m taking a chance with asking for assistance. $5,000 would get me out of debt temporarily and I’m hoping that I would find a work from home job soon cause I can’t leave my mom and 2 kids unattended and 4 people living off my mom’s retirement is stressful. Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Single Mom trying to recover from years of financial misunderstanding and lacking support

I have been a single mother for most of my children’s lives. Their father has not contributed anything to support raising my two daughters who are now 22 and 15. When the oldest was four, the California courts ordered him to pay $0 child support and gave me full custody. After the second was born, she was added to the same order with an addendum. Overall, he never was required to help so he didn’t help. Over the years, I worked multiple jobs, put myself through college and university, and applied myself the best I knew how.

Learning about proper financing and how to manage a home, credit, savings, etc was not something I realized in my younger years that I needed to dive into. I went about living paycheck to paycheck with a very basic understanding of finances. It took the pandemic and several acquaintances with similar situations to mine being in better financial health for me to realize I was missing something.

I have worked hard to build credit, savings, and live within my means. Like many, I ran into roadblocks over the years that drained the savings before I could refill it and hit my credit more than I wanted it to, though I am consistently working towards building better always.

My present situation is that I have to house share with my oldest daughter in order to pay basic living expenses. My income and hers is enough to cover the bills with limited savings ($100/month started over in December 2023). The concern is that she had been working from home and was moved back into an office setting, forcing her to buy a car since there is not public transportation available to her work from our apartment. So we are both paying on cars now, which limits our basic living funds and she is maxed out at her portion of the rent and her personal bills (doctor, credit, vehicle, insurance, etc).

Last year we had unfortunately both been in car accidents (3 in total), 1 of which was a hit and run in a rental I was driving that I am still dealing with financially. That was the largest crux of what ate up our small savings, and now with less than $200 in savings, I have another $750 to pay for the hit and run.

On top of all that, being at the bare line to pay the monthly living expenses makes it stressful because I am always concerned about another incident causing more financial stress. I was diagnosed with Asthma last year, but there is ongoing testing with my lower quarter left lung not responding to treatments. While I have insurance, it is high deductible, meaning everything from January 1 until I pay my portion of the deductible ($8,000) will be out of pocket.

All of this together is difficult to manage and I am trying to find a way to cut down expenses, like paying off the car I am paying on so I can put more into savings for emergencies. I am also trying to start a Cottage Food business because I learned during the holidays that the sweets I make for colleagues and friends is something many people like enough they are willing to pay for it. Starting that does cost, however, so it’s on hold until I can manage funds to properly start it.

I recently received notice that my student loans are set to a repayment amount of $0.00 per month through December 2024 due to my limited income, which will help me get things sorted to restart payments in January 2025. Realistically, however, I do not want to wait to start paying if possible since my student loans are over $50,000 in total. Waiting is not going to make the burden smaller. For transparency sake, the degree I received was expected to help me with promotions in the company I work for, but the positions that would apply to are not presently available and not expected for another year or two now. I am consistently looking to improve this situation by networking and searching for new opportunities, but as of yet I have not been able to secure something better.

I have not been able to look beyond my own pride to ask for help in this way in the past. It has, unfortunately, taken me many years of hard work, spinning my wheels, and failed attempts to resolve this situation on my own or through the help of friends, family, and networking to be able to even consider asking for help in this way. I really don’t know what I should be writing for this message, so I am simply putting what I believe is relevant to my situation so that other people understand why I am asking for help. I could probably talk for hours about all the ways financial help would benefit my small family.

Single Mom Looking for a Miracle

I’m a single Mom to two wonder boys. October and November were horrible months for me. First I got the flu, my car broke down, and then I injured my ankle. I work in a restaurant so I wasn’t able to go in. We are about to be evicted any day. I’m begging for 5550 to pay my back rent. I don’t know where to go, and I have tried to work it out with my apartments, but it’s all or nothing.  I don’t know how this all happened at once. I’m honestly praying for a miracle.

Free from abuse

Hello Everyone

I made one already but i forgot to place my cash app at the end.
I was in an abusive relationship for 9 years. I have finally built the courage to get out of the abusive relationship. I have 5 beautiful children. 4 girls and 1 boy. I placed everything in my name so I had 15,000 in credit card debt trying to make ends meet. I have paid down 7,000 not including all the interest I had to pay. I am asking for 8,000 but anything would help me to pay it off sooner so I can buy a new home and save for my babies. I have been working 3 jobs and I lost so much time with my kids that all I’m asking for is time back with them. If anyone is able to help me I would greatly appreciate it.

$8000 needed but any donation is appreciated

My cash app is $kim2310

I DON’T THINK THERE IS A CATEGORY FOR THIS!

Well, I’ve finally swallowed my pride and decided to reach out.

I’ve tried every other possible means to gather funds, right down to selling my furniture, and catching a bus to another town to beg for money so that it would lesser the chances of anyone inknow seeing me.

It’s been a slow motion fall into where I’m at now, and the only thing I can see is the bottom coming up to meet me very soon.

And we all know, it’s not the fall that kills you, it’s the sudden stop at the end.

My daughter was hit by a car back in January last year, I had to quit my job, found out I needed surgery as well after I got a random kidney infection and had hours to live, bills keep coming from that lifestyle you had, and I’ve done all I can to try and slow what’s been hunting me for months.

My car has now decided its not gonna help out anymore either, and the entire exhaust and parts of the electrical in the engine have quit, I can’t afford another car, and my daughter can’t exactly ride a bike these days.

We were doing so damn well, we were happy and content.

I had left a 10 year domestic violence relationship in October 2022, and we lived out of my car for most of the winter, and I spent every damn day trying to hussle up a place to live and work at the same time.

We finally got an extremely run down place in a park, but it was ours and we were safe.

Then I get that phone call that’s gonna haunt me forever, of my daughters friend screaming and crying that she’d been hit by a car.

I honestly still don’t remember how I got to the hospital.

So I’m here today to ask of you what I can’t do for her as her mother.

We are behind in rent, have no transport, and now not much furniture thanks to me.

It’s the rent and car I’m struggling with, actually writing this is just as big of a struggle for me.

It’s just her and I, I’ve got no family, I was given away when I was younger, and the woman who raised me past away 2 years ago.

I don’t know what else to do, and I can’t see any light ahead of me at the moment.

But something has to give, because I can’t keep looking at her and feeling this way

Thankyou for taking the time to read this.

I apologise if it’s a waste of your time.

I need help renting a car to get to my disabled infant that was just flown 7 hours away to have a life threatening surgery.

Hi, I’m a 24 year old single mom of 3 kids under the age of 5. My youngest was born with a rare life threatening gene mutation that has caused her to be hospitalized long term. She’s being transferred to a hospital 7 hours away today on 1/3/24. I’ve lost my job due to not being able to leave her and my car was recently repossessed. I have barely been surviving this past year with my oldests preschool tuition, child care for the older two, rent and electricity for a home I’m rarely at, medical expenses, and just everyday living. I have no family or friends to help me. My only family is my sister that lives 3 states away with her own family to take care of. Could anyone PLEASE help me out with renting a car for a week? The total cost is $650 for the smallest car they have. I have $230 that I have saved up but thought I would have more time to figure something out. Anything, even just prayers, is very very much appreciated.

Single mother needs help

I am a single parent who has to support 3 children. This has been going on for almost 10 years.  I even left my children to work abroad.  The children are looked after by my parents while I work.  I try to meet the school needs and food costs of my children and the mother who takes care of my children.  Since the Covid virus hit the economy very hard, I did not work during the Covid period and used all the remaining savings for living expenses for me, my children and my mother.  I even borrowed money from relatives and have not been able to pay off the debt.  I never give up because I believe God will give us the best.  But as the days go by, the price of basic necessities gets higher and higher, the rental price for residential units also doubles, while salaries are not sufficient.  I took 2 jobs to make ends meet but because I am no longer young (47 years old) I often get sick because I am too tired but I have no choice.  Currently I don’t have many work shifts because business is quiet so the boss has to reduce the working hours of the staff who are paid by the hour so that the business can survive.  My salary was reduced and I couldn’t make ends meet.  I thought about giving up but I really love my children and I have to try for their sake.  I’m sure there are still many good and well-off people who want to help me here.  As a mother, I really miss my child who I haven’t seen in person for years, we only communicate via video call.  It’s very sad to tell this, hopefully one day we can gather together.  Thank you so much for your time to read my story.

A home for Christina,Chad, and Tank

  1. I am a single mom, juggling the responsibilities of being a full-time student in cyber security while also trying to provide a stable home for myself, my 14-year-old son, Chad, and our emotional support dog, Tank. We have been through a lot, and all I have ever wanted is a simple and safe home for my little family.

Recently, my son was diagnosed with Gitelman’s syndrome, a rare genetic kidney disorder. This diagnosis has added an extra layer of stress and worry to our lives. Currently, Chad is staying with my parents, as our current living situation is not suitable for his health needs. It breaks my heart to be separated from him, but I am doing everything I can to improve our circumstances.

At the moment, Tank and I are staying at a friend’s place, but the living conditions there are far from ideal. The rent is exorbitant for the shack that we are living in, and it feels like a constant struggle to make ends meet. As a single mom and a student, financial resources are limited, and finding affordable housing has been incredibly challenging.

On top of all of this, I have faced significant hardships in the past. I have endured sexual assault and mental abuse, which has left me with severe anxiety and PTSD with recurring nightmares. These experiences have made it even more crucial for me to create a stable and secure environment for my son and myself.

I am determined to complete my associate’s degree in cyber security, as I believe it will provide a better future for my family. However, the combination of being a student, a single mom, and dealing with health issues has made it difficult to balance everything. I often find myself overwhelmed and exhausted, but I refuse to give up.

I am reaching out for help and support because I believe that everyone deserves a chance to have a safe and comfortable home. I am hopeful that with assistance, I will be able to find affordable housing that meets our needs. Having a stable home will not only benefit Chad’s health but also provide a sense of security and peace for both of us.

My dream is to provide a loving and nurturing environment for my son, where he can thrive despite his health challenges. I want him to grow up feeling safe and loved, surrounded by positive influences. Tank, our emotional support dog, has been a great source of comfort and stability for both of us, and I want to ensure that we can continue to provide for him as well.

I am grateful for any help, guidance, or resources that can be offered to us. Together, we can make a difference and help create a brighter future for my son, Chad, our beloved dog, Tank, and me. Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for considering our situation.

Urgent Appeal-A Desperate Plea for a Brave Single Mother

I am reaching out to you with a heavy heart and a deep sense of urgency on behalf of someone who is enduring an unimaginable crisis. It is with great concern that I share the story of a resilient 26-year-old single mother named Madison who, despite her incredible strength and positivity, now finds herself at the brink of homelessness.

Madison embarked on a courageous journey at the age of 18, moving across the country on her own in pursuit of a better life for herself and her 5-year-old daughter. Her determination and optimism have always been unwavering, as she worked hard to create a stable environment for her family. Unfortunately, a series of devastating events unfolded fast and fierce , starting with the breakdown of her car, leading to the loss of her job and subsequently her apartment. She has no family or friends as support other then Me to have a shoulder to lean on.

What makes Madison’s situation even more heartbreaking is her ongoing battle for child custody, highlighting the immense challenges she faces as a single mother. She has displayed remarkable resilience and positivity throughout this difficult journey, but the recent diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) has added an additional layer of complexity to her already dire circumstances.

Despite her best efforts, Madison has had to seek refuge in a homeless shelter, where the harsh realities of her situation have become painfully apparent. She has exhausted every available resource and, regrettably, none have provided the relief she so desperately needs.

I am reaching out in the hope of any extended helping hand during this critical time. Madison is not just a statistic ; she is a vibrant, loving mother who has faced adversity with grace and courage. Her daughter deserves a stable and loving home, and Madison is fighting tooth and nail to provide just that.

If there’s anything you can contribute—whether it be financial assistance, resources, or connections—it would make an immeasurable difference in Madison’s life. Your support could be the beacon of hope she desperately needs to navigate through these challenging times.

Please consider Madison’s story as you read this plea, and let your compassionate spirit guide you to lend a helping hand. Any donations would be sent to her directly paypal.me/MadisonRB09

Thank you for taking the time to read this heartfelt appeal. Your kindness and generosity can truly change the course of Madison’s life and offer her daughter the stability she deserves.

Single Mother of two, please help me someone.

Hi,

My name is Genny, I was forced into being a single mother of two children when my husband abruptly filed for divorce when my son was just 3 months old, he is now 3years. A man who I thought was my rock and I met him when we were studying the same course at the university over 10 years ago and he woke up one day and decided to leave. I have two children with him, a 6year old and a 3 year old. All the marital assets we owned together he sold them and had all funds diverted to his mother in another country.

He also applied to the courts to take both my children away from me. I had to take bank loans to cover legal costs because I was trying so hard  not to lose custody of my kids. This has left me in huge debt, I am severely broke and I can not keep up with the monthly bill payments.  It is a case of picking which bill to pay and which to default on each month as I can not afford to pay all. I am currently in £80,000 worth of debt. I have a full time job and I have been looking around for a second job to support my monthly income but I can not seem to secure any. I have made over 100 applications for literally any job but, I have not been successful.

To make matters worse, the house I and my children live in is up for sale. My ex husband wants the proceeds of the house. This will leave I and my children out on the streets if I don’t find a place. I am desperately looking for a place for I and my kids. Please I need somebody out there to help me. My salary is not enough to secure a mortgage to get a decent house for I and my kids. I would have loved to put a deposit down to for a house but, my monthly salary is just not enough. Each month, I have to pay all my bank loans off first before considering what is left for I and my kids each month. I struggle to buy groceries, I don’t eat some days so I have enough food for my kids to eat. I am behind on payment for my 6 year olds school fees. I have already started getting notifications from her school for payment. I don’t know what to do. I was picking up my son from nursery the other day and my petrol tank was on empty. I was driving home praying ,crying and hoping my car does not stop on the way because I didn’t have money to buy petrol. I pray someone reading this can help me.  I am in desperate need of help. I don’t know what else to do or where to turn to. Please kindly find a place in your heart to help me somebody. I have reached rock bottom and have no where else to turn to.

Single mom, 3 kids, only vehicle needs repairs

I am not very good at this, and I feel some background is necessary. I am going to apologize in advance, as this may be a little lengthy, but please bear with me.

I am a single mom, three beautiful girls. My oldest is 16 and I have 12-year-old twins. They used to go back and forth between my home and their dad’s until about 3 years ago. He moved out of state, and they have lived with me full time since.

One of the twins, had MRSA in 2017. What was supposed to be a quick 20 minute outpatient surgery turned into two surgeries that were over an hour each, and a hospital stay of 4 days. After the surgery, the antibiotics were not working so they had to give her major adult doses of top strength antibiotics.
We almost lost her.  Due to the strength and amount of the antibiotics needed, she now has auto immune issues.

At the same time, she was diagnosed with  scoliosis and her older sister was diagnosed with anemia, and discovered her white count was low. Since my dad had leukemia, they said they couldn’t rule that out and referred us to a hematologist in San Francisco, as well as an immune specialist and orthopedist for her sister.
I finally had saved enough money to purchase my first vehicle in over a decade. We were making trips to UCSF every 3-4 weeks for testing and whatnot for a few months, as well as driving to the Hanger Clinic in Sacramento for a custom brace for her sister’s scoliosis which was progressing rapidly.

About 6 months in, my car broke down. I spent all of my savings trying to figure out what was wrong, on top of feeding and supporting the girls because their dad did not contribute at this point.

I had it towed to several mechanics, transmission places, etc. s. Finally one figured it out and tells me that there must have been a hairline fracture that just kept getting bigger from the vibration of driving. Something finally snapped off and I needed a new motor. I had planned on using my tax return to do this. H&R Block screwed up my taxes and I ended up only getting a fraction of what I expected.

I have been working paycheck to paycheck. They qualify for EBT, thank god, but it only goes so far. So a lot of my pay goes towards food at the end of the month and whatever other needs they have. I don’t qualify for cash aid because on paper, we share custody.

We live with my mom because neither of us would be able to afford to live anywhere on our own.

I have had to rely heavily on friends and family to get anywhere outside of town.
Every time I get a little money put away towards getting my car fixed, something comes up that takes priority. I have been without my car for almost a year now. I have missed so many important things.

I am not one to ask for help. Ever. I have always been very resourceful and independent. Also, because I know that there are so many people out there that have far less than I do, that need it more, and possibly are even more deserving.  The motor is going to run me about $1600. The motor, labor, and back registration, and insurance is going to run me roughly $2500-$3000.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

J.T.
