Support for a Caregiver

I’ve been a caregiver for my mom Joan and my brother Mike (my brother has a disability, which he’s struggled with for over a decade now) for several years, which has been financially straining.

Our mom, Joan, was hospitalized just after Christmas 2021 with Heart Failure and spent two months at Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Since she’s been home she’s been on oxygen via a machine, on and off, since Feb. 2022. Mom experiences chronic dizziness, difficulty in breathing, and generalized weakness, which keeps her bed ridden often.

Neither one of them, especially our mom, can drive. I drive mom to several medical appointments on a regular basis including to the Memorial West Hospital Heart Center, her general doctor appt’s, dental appt’s, and to Labcorp (located inside of a local Walgreens) for numerous blood draws for Metabolic blood panels and many more types of tests.

I pick up both mom and Mikes meds at the pharmacy regularly. Food shopping, laundry, daily meals, are provided by myself financially. I take mom’s vitals signs (Blood pressure, pulse oximeter to measure her blood oxygen level, her pulse, etc. I’ve struggled financially in the past four years to keep up with being a caregiver for two immediate family members whom I love dearly, especially since I myself was hospitalized in late 2019/early 2020 with serious medical problems. I hope this message finds you well. I have recently been diagnosed with scoliosis. I noticed progressively more pain and difficulty with movement over the past year – causing me to finally go see a chiropractor this week. He sent me to a radiologist and diagnosed me after seeing my x-rays.

The doctor is a scoliosis specialist that has a great reputation for correcting spinal issues. He makes a customized apparatus to help patients realign and correct the issues throughout the spine, in addition to intensive physical therapy. My challenge is that the treatment costs $8,000 for the treatment of 20 2-hour sessions, corrective supplies and other materials. I recently completed some construction on my home and cannot afford the $8,000 treatment. I’m usually very responsible, but my savings has been depleted by a series of emergencies. I am a Senior Citizen just short of 60 years old.  On July 25^th of this year (just a few weeks ago) I had a Stroke. This made it very difficult to use my right leg and my right arm. So, as you can imagine, walking was extremely challenging. Filling out all the forms at the hospital and doctors’ offices made me feel like I was back in 3^rd grade learning how to write in cursive.

I went to Glendale Adventist Hospital Emergency Room and had a myriad of tests administered. After various types of Cat Scans, MRIs, X rays and blood tests, it was determined that my blood pressure was extremely high, my blood sugar was extremely high, and that I needed to check into the hospital for further observation.

The following morning, I was visited by the Neurosurgeon. He verified that I had stroke.  He said that I was very lucky because if the stroke had happened 1 or 2 millimeters to the right, it would have been in the language area of my brain.  I would not have been able to talk to him or anybody else.

Due to the cost of the Hospital stay with all the different tests, as well as prescriptions, and various Doctor visits afterwards, I have mounting bills that are substantial. I have Health Insurance through my employer, but the deductible is quite high. I am working on getting Short Term Disability through EDD, but it is a complicated process with all sorts of paperwork required. For weeks after the stroke, I was not up to the task of being on the computer and dealing with all of this. My wife is not computer literate, so she was unable to assist me with these matters.  Even when I do start to receive Disability payments, I know that it will amount to a fraction of my regular pay.  Unfortunately, due to various things that have happened in the last few years (like the Pandemic), I am carrying a great deal of debt.  Receiving a fraction of my regular pay is going to make it difficult to maintain timely payments.  I have worked very hard to keep a good credit score.

By the way, regarding my Wife, she had been on FMLA (which was Unpaid Leave) for about 2 months when I had my stroke.  She was on leave because she and her sister were taking care of their elderly Mother who had Alzheimer’s and various other physical issues.

My Wife had to take a couple of extra weeks of FMLA just to look after me.  Her Mother finally passed away a couple of nights ago and we will need to contribute to final expenses.

So, I am trying to raise at least $10,000 to cover medical expenses, gaps in pay, and all the other things that are hitting us right now. I really appreciate the generosity of the individuals who contribute to this site.

My stroke was just serious enough to get my attention but not so serious that I will be permanently disabled.  I decided, when I was in the Hospital, that I would rehabilitate myself and become stronger and healthier than ever. My progress has been incredible. I am not only doing this for myself and my family, but because I want to set an example for Middle Aged People and Senior Citizens  I made a promise to myself and my Maker (or the Universe or however you like to look at it) that I would help others by setting a positive example and eventually, donate to charities and those in need…just like you donors on this are doing.

I’m a recent widow who lost her husband due to medical complications with ESRD. Unfortunately our medical insurance didn’t cover all of the treatments, surgeries, hospital stays, etc. involved with this 3+ year long battle and my income won’t be enough to figure out a payment plan for the bill pile ups while still managing to stay afloat. He never had life insurance or much of savings so I paid out of pocket for his funeral and cremation service, but I’m already in deep debt and have depleted both of our savings. I’ve taken a few loans to cover cost of living while staying with him in the hospital during FMLA from work and to allow for some grieving time and I’m afraid the payments for these loans collectively are a bit more than my income when I return. Both our families are helping where they can but I’m very much not trying to burden them with my expenses on top of their own.  I am currently applying for another job as well to supplement and work out what I can but I’m overwhelmed and in shock I’m not sure how to balance this while grieving. Any help at all would be appreciated as our remaining portion for his medical bills we’ve received so far are upwards of $12k and the loans/credit cards I’ve taken out are a collective $15k.

I never thought I’d be in a situation of asking for help financially, but back I am on a limited income with Social Security and am unable to pay for a medication prescribed to me back in February of this year when I got COVID and went to the Emergency Room one night sick as a dog.  After waiting hours to be seen, I was told I had COVID and was given a 30 day supply of medication.  I took the medication immediately before leaving the hospital.  About a month later, I received a bill from the hospital telling me I owed them $3211.01 for the medication.  I was shocked since my medication is usually covered under my insurance.  But the problem came when I found out they didn’t use my insurance card to cover it.  They filled the script from their own pharmacy.  I’ve been on the phone every month for the past 6 months with the hospital telling them I can’t afford it on my income, but I still continue getting a bill every month with interest accruing.  Now I owe over $3400.00. I’ve been living and working abroad alone as I’ve decided to do that in order to pay off my debts faster. Unfortunately, recently I’ve sprained my ankle on the staircase quite badly, I had to have an x-ray and ultrasound done, also got an orthosis and the doctor said I will require at least 12 sessions with physiotherapist. The thing is, each session is very expensive in this country and to be able to afford all of them I’d need to spend my whole salary, not to mention the cost of rent, food and transportation. I was told I need to do start it as soon as possible, otherwise I’ll have problems with my ankle and keeping balance till the end of my life… The problem is, I don’t have anyone I could borrow money from and it would take a few months before I can put off such an amount of money so I would greatly appreciate any financial help offered so that I can help heal my ankle properly and avoid any problems with it in the future.
