Hello, my name is Tanya. I am writing to request assistance with shelter, food and clothing for 2 senior men who are about to lose the housing they have been in for quite some time.  I am thinking $40,000 to $50,000 for a year or some in-kind equivalent should be enough to carry them for a year while we sort out the details of moving forward.

The 2 gentlemen are Tommy and Joey.  Tommy is a 75 years old man with a disability of $900 per month, possibly Alzheimer’s (per Joey) I know his head shakes uncontrollably.  Joey is probably in his mid 60’s or early 70’s, has had a stroke within the past 10 years or so, walks with a cane and has one arm in a sling.  Joey has been living undocumented in the United States for the past 30 years.  Neither of these guys is employed.  Both men were living with a friend of ours who passed away in May of this year.  I believe our friend Mr. Barry was the rep payee and legal guardian for Tommy.  Joey and Mr. Barry have been friends well over the 45 years that I had known Mr. Barry.

At Mr. Barry’s funeral I told Joey I would keep in touch with him (wondering in the back of my head where these guys would be moving to.  Around September of this year Joey called me stating Mr. Barry’s son was evicting them (and 2 other men) from the house in order to put it up for sale.  Mr. Barry had told me years ago that he had given the house to his son.  Joey also stated they have a court date in December of this year in Landlord tenant court.

For the past month or so I have been calling DC Government and Non-Profit Organizations to no avail.  Contact number voicemails promise to call back in 24-48 hours, though they never do.  I am a 2 time Cancer survivor with back problems, working the night shift and like Joey I use a cane if I have to walk more half a block, so getting around to different sites (even if I do the driving) seeking help will take time, especially if I have Tommy and Joey with me and the cost of ride shares if I don’t drive.  I did go to one DC Day Center seeking assistance with Tommy and Joey.  There I found Joey needs certain documents to get at least a proper DC ID card (which will take some time-if documents can even be obtained given he is not a US citizen).  I have never gotten a call back from the gentleman I spoke with at the Day Center.  Tommy had a guy with Mental Health issues taunting him while we were there, which was concerning.  Tommy does have a Case manager at a DC Agency for the Aged, though we are never able to reach each other because I sleep during part of the day and miss her text’s and she misses my return calls or text’s.

I read a quote last week that stated, “This will not fail because of me”.  I took that to mean I should not waiver in my attempts to help these 2 gentlemen.  i watch a lot of You tube video’s, (and I swear these Smartphones  listen to our conversations because) I came across a video that stated there are people who will give money or in-kind assistance if you ask for help.  So, here I am.  thank you in advance for listening.  Paypal.me/TommyandJoey

This is taking a lot of humility for me to ask for help, but I honestly enjoy writing and maybe at least by expressing myself, this will be therapeutic and helpful in multiple ways. Stress from work and not addressing or mental and physical health issues took a toll on us. We both decided to work part-time and take turns watching the baby while one of us was at work. With inflation, higher electric bills during the heat wave in San Antonio, and also increased water bills and rent we couldn’t afford to pay our car note and it was repossessed. I understand that this struggle is a part of life. I don’t want to ask for a handout, but I do need help. I ask that you invest in me. Like you, I care about people and want to help. My abilities and ambitions have taken a backseat to my career. I want to help my ill mother, who is a registered nurse to retire. She has a pacemaker and stroke range high blood pressure, but still shows up to work with her radiant smile, comforting her patients the moment she shows up to work. I know this because we’ve worked together. I would like her to be able to spend the time with her grandson that she didn’t get to spend with my siblings and I when we were kids because she was working multiple jobs as a single parent. With a little help, I want to invest in real estate. I want to work deals to benefit those in need. And continue to learn all I can to provide free education and mentorship for less fortunate people. My mother passed away a few months ago. It’s the worst feeling in the world! I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. I’m the only child left therefore I’m left to figure out all the paperwork, legal stuff, etc. In addition to that, she left me the house she lived in. That’s a good thing in the long run but I wasn’t really prepared to manage a house. Get finances in order takes time. By time waits for no man and that’s where my problem arises. When potential employers claim they don’t discriminate based on age I have to giggle somewhat. The interviews I was involved in were all awarded to candidates half my age. However, the factory just needed bodies on the line and age wasn’t a factor. The physical stress of line work began to trigger Crohn’s flares. Slowly at first, then as more physical body stress built up, they began to come quicker into each work shift to the point I was unable to work the line. 

New employment plan. Work from home, remotely, as close to the bathroom as possible. Working as an independent contractor offers me the flexibility to set my own hours around my illness. In addition, I have started a YouTube channel. The channel is called, “Refner On The Loose”, a place for family, travel, and special events videos can be posted and viewed by everyone. The channel hasn’t become monetized yet, not until the minimum requirements can be reached. Eventually, the channel will become a passive stream of income. For that, I also need a computer for better video editing. I currently use my smartphone for all videos. The technology is limited. The quality of the videos suffers but upgrades require money. Invest in me and be entertained as a bonus to your gracious giving. The videos are always free to watch.

I first would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart to even read my story and consider helping.  I am trying so hard to get one foot in front of another and go forward with my life.  But at this point I feel like I am at the lowest point I have ever been at least financially.  I’ve went from being a struggling single mom to a caregiver for my parents to losing my parents and working my way through grief.  I have had good contract jobs, but most of the years recently I have simply been underemployed and unable to meet my basic needs.  I have been applying to find better work. Thank you for reading this im embarrassed to even be doing this I’ve tried every Avenue to try to get myself out of mess I am a hairstylist and after COVID hit I decided I have to build at home because I have no family or help with my kids and school they are now back in person school. I’m still working from home and work is fine maybe a little slow due to economy but basically I have known I’ve had some depression but as a kid I was raised in a foster home because mom was on drugs and dad committed suicide when I was 5 it wasn’t easy but I know it could have been worse I always say that I’m a strong woman and can hold and carry a lot emotionally and mentally and always have been independent because I had to be I never use my past as an excuse well I have 2 children a 15yr and a 9yr at 21/2 my oldest child was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes it was a total life change and challenge not only at home but with her school, people not understanding what it entails, food, dr appointment and so much more emotionally for both of us but I thought I was a strong person I can honestly say my daughter is the strongest person I know! Fast forward life has been okay I’ve always been proud of myself for being a hard worker paying my bills on time and trying to strive for the best always and more because I want my kids to always have a better life than I had and show them any dream is possible with hardwork. well after COVID hit in 2021 it was a Friday in June and my son 7 at the time was also diagnosed with type 1 diabetes but the kicker is….the chance of siblings having the same diagnoses of Type 1 diabetes is literally 5%!!!!! My heart was then shattered into a million pieces thinking why, what did I do in life for both my kids to have this disease they have to do at least 5 injections shots a day for the rest of their life. My faith has been tested since then. We do have insurance so it does help but for both it gets pricey but since I have tried not to spiral but it’s so hard to stay strong and I am so ashamed of myself I never would have thought I would be behind on anything well I can barely keep my head above water I try to keep ahead but I take 5 steps back then go 3 steps back. But I’ve been facing it head on trying hard to work on my credit because I can’t get help with anything (loans, etc) it makes life so hard. I can’t finish my sons second half of oral surgery or braces for my daughter yet because I can’t get over my financial hump . I have no one to turn to no friends or family. I’ve started going to church again and even trying to tithe knowing gods got this and I will be blessed because he knows my heart is with good intentions but I’m so desperate at this point I’ve even thought about doing things in different lines of work that I wouldn’t be proud of but that’s my desperation right now I’m in line to get my car repoed (3000) I’m behind and that is all I have I only have less than 6k in cc debt total but I’m asking please at least my car to get it ahead it would be truly a blessing to just get help with that so I can figure out the rest and have the motivation to get it all together to be okay for myself and my kids especially mentally because I always have a heavy head and heart just knowing I did this to myself and I can’t seem to just get out of it especially when I think I’m doing good something else pops up . Good day and thank you for stopping to read my story. I am the wife of a disabled veteran with four children on the brink of despair and at the end of my rope.  I never knew a place like this existed but I am thankful that it is here and hopeful to receive help.  I have an electricity bill that I have been unable to pay since before covid. Emergency assistance paid for a portion of it but by the time they sent the money it was back to an exorbitant amount. It is has only been over the last 2 years that this has happened and I have been living here for seven of those years. I am confident with a reset of this bill to a zero balance it is manageable. I have until November 30th 2023 to make the payment as I am on my second request for an extension.
