This year has been a really difficult year. We were given a non-renewal of our lease, which means you are not allowed to stay in your apartment anymore and no reason has to be given as it is NOT an eviction. So we had to leave our apartment after over 30 years because of the owner who had the property for about 2 years. We had to struggle to find a place and ended up taking our new apartment sight unseen just to keep from being homeless as we had less than 2 months to find someplace to live. Being forced to leave our home was very traumatizing for us and has caused us severe PTSD.
We had to move during a horrible blizzard. As the stairs in the hallway were soaking wet i fell down the stairs twice and ended up cracking a tooth/filling. I have no dental insurance. I need to have the tooth x-rayed and looked at by a dentist. That alone is at least $200. To then have the tooth fix or pulled will be around another $500. I am having a lot of pain on that side of my face from the tooth and having to chew so carefully to not cause further damage.
The people that helped us move broke 2 dressers, 1 recliner, dining room table, Queen size bed, 2 floor lamps, and a bunch of other small things. They did not offer to replace any of it as their view was at least all large furniture was moved and we weren’t homeless. I was left to finish packing and move it to new apartment on my own despite my being physically disabled and heart problems.
We have not been able to replace any of those items as we live on a very small fixed income. We both have a lot of health issues. The stress of being forced to move, having very little time to find a new place to live and then having the moving experience go as horrible as it did put both of us in a very bad place with our health. We have more expenses in our new place that we are having a hard time paying for, including electricity and electric heat.
I just took our 23 year old vehicle in for a loose tailpipe and walked out with a $3,500 minimum estimate to fix the vehicle to make it safe to drive just in town to go to the doctor appointments and to get groceries. Now that winter is basically here I need to fix the vehicle ASAP. We can’t be without a vehicle as many ER visits in the last couple of years due to heart conditions. The person who used to jumpstart our vehicle has now recently moved out of town so we also need a car battery charger as we have no one to come jumpstart our vehicle. I would love to be able to get enough help here to maybe even find a newer and more reliable vehicle. I am afraid with as old as the vehicle is even with repairs it might not last much longer.
I also need to get an eye exam and new glasses as it has been 8 years since i had new ones as i don’t have vision insurance. These old glasses are increasing the number of migraines I am experiencing.
As our ground floor apartment is so freezing cold already we are going to need to buy more long sleeve shirts, pants and sweatshirts to stay warm. We can’t afford to turn the heat up and pay the extra electricity costs. We also would like to get curtain rods and blackout curtains to help keep it warmer because our windows are so drafty and cut down on heating costs but that would cost us at least $200.
It seems like we can’t even catch our breaths between disasters this year and are struggling to just survive. It would be a huge relief to be able to take care of all of these issues and have a little extra towards the next disaster that I am sure is just right around the corner. Us being on a very small fixed income, rising costs of food and gas, additional expenses of the new apartment and the stress of trying to find solutions to all of this is really causing huge setbacks to our health.
We have tried finding local organizations to help with the car repair but everything is out of funding. We have no family or friends to help us out either.
I have a difficult time asking for anything. If anybody could help it would be greatly appreciated. If someone would even do a monthly amount for a few months it would help.
It would be nice to end this year on a better note than it started.
Thank you for taking the time to read this very long sob story. Thank you for any help you can provide us.
