My Fiance Mike Lofato died unexpectedly at the end of April as a result of an accident, but not after spending five excruciating weeks in ICU while his unseen internal injuries kept multiplying and shutting his body down.

Without his input, I cannot afford our bills and am seeking a second job, but I am 60 years old. I will try to sell our house and his truck but need to make the payments in the meantime and have exhausted our saving already for his funeral and some medical costs. He contributed $2500  a month to bills and I am trying to raise one year of his input so I can get a foothold and pay off the bills and have moving expenses to a cheaper place to live.

Mike was an amazing individual who was positive and loving despite having dealt with pain nearly all his life. He worked from aged 13 to help support his single mom and little sisters and worked hard all his life ending with early retirement from General Motors on disability from having a liver transplant and then having significant back surgery from being hit my a piece of machinery. He was younger and didn’t have the chance to build up any retirement savings or pension.

Because of PSC, a liver disease that caused his transplant, Mike was unable to qualify for life insurance.

We had just moved to Alabama, so there is no equity in our house and we both had loans on vehicles that we hoped to payoff and keep into our retirement.

I have no family and Mike’s parents are in their late 80s, with his dad fighting cancer and his mom recently having a stroke. I am trying also to arrange a family ceremony in Florida so his parents can attend his funeral. I am still even trying to pay to get his obituary published.

We were not dirt poor but we were not rich people. Hard working blue collar people who just got by. He was the light of my life and now I face a very dark future both personally and financially.

There was someone knocking on her front door Sunday, the 5th of May. Two sheriff’s and a young woman to tell my daughter her dad was deceased. He was found behind a liquor store that Sunday morning, fentanyl overdose. Her worst fear became a reality. Her dad had become a homeless addict. For the past 6 years he was in and out of rehab programs fighting for his sobriety and a relationship with his daughter, but there was relapse after relapse and more distance from his daughter. She loved her dad so much and wanted him whole again. She wanted and needed her daddy. She is a college student studying to become a therapist for addiction and mental health issues. She wants to open a facility one day to help save this demographic of people. The majority of his family and all but one friend gave up on him long time ago, shes his only next of kin and is now faced with putting’him to rest properly. She was unable to celebrate his life when he was alive so she wants to celebrate his death. I am asking for $8,000 so she is able to do this, she’s in college and has no resources to help with this expense. Please help my little girl put her dad to rest so she can finally heal with a loving goodbye.

I left my job in 2021 and went work free for just over two years lived off of my savings and investments no government help in  October 2023 I went back to work at a much lower pay rate but was doing ok then in November 2023 my brother passed away suddenly. I had to travel from Las Cruces NM back to NJ to care of his affairs as his wife had a massive stroke shortly before his passing and she is still incapacitated and has no income. Well I had to max out 2 credit cards between travel expenses and funeral and all that comes with it now i am left with 2 maxed out cards (over $21,000.oo) and i am struggling to make the payments. My wife and I had a wonderful life together.  We both had careers we enjoyed and looked forward to retirement.  Retiring in 2016 we decided to travel, living in a camper, to see our great country while we had the health to do it.  In 2019 we both decided to supplement our income, entering back into the work force.  Things were economically becoming more difficult and then there was Covid.

Cancer had plagued my wife her entire life in one form or another.  Breast cancer twice, lung cancer, losing her right lung, cancer in her reproductive organs leading to a hysterectomy, and finally multiple myeloma.

In December of 2023 my wife developed a severe pain in the thigh of her right leg.  We assumed it was sciatica, but the pain continued to get worse.  She went to a doctor who tried to treat her for the pain, but it continued to worsen.  The doctor recommended a pet scan and that is when it was discovered that she had cancer again, multiple myeloma.  A large mass attached to the back of the rib cage on the right side and another mass attached to the back of her right thigh bone.  The mass on her thigh bone was extremely painful.  Radiation on the leg was started in February of 2024.  In mid-January my wife had lost her appetite because she would feel ill and often got sick after eating and she would not consume enough fluids. On the morning of February 13^th, she was admitted to the hospital with complications of pneumonia and sepsis and in the afternoon of February 14^th my wife passed away.

Losing a spouse is one of life’s most profound and emotionally challenging experiences. Amidst the grief and heartache, I was confronted with practical realities, including financial hardship. The death of my spouse has had significant financial implications, affecting everything from daily expenses to long-term financial security. Coping with these challenges is far more difficult than I had imagined.

One of the immediate financial impacts of losing a spouse is the loss of their income. For many families, especially those reliant on dual incomes, this sudden reduction can be devastating. It leads to difficulties in meeting basic needs such as mortgage or rent payments, utility bills, and groceries and at this time of year, paying taxes.

In addition to the immediate loss of income, I also faced unexpected expenses related to the death and funeral arrangements. We grossly underestimated adequate savings or insurance coverage, these expenses can quickly add up, further straining the finances. Medical bills were also incurred during my wife’s illness.

My wife and I had been living on our combined social security and we both worked as sub-contractors in the security guard industry.  With the loss of her side of the income I went back to work as soon as possible to try and meet the ongoing financial obligations and the financial obligations of my wife’s passing.

I am not asking for so much that I would be financially independent, I just need a little help to get through this unexpected financial burden.

In closing I would say, if you have loved ones let them know how much you love them.  And if losing them would impact you negatively financially, reevaluate your end-of-life plans.

I’m reaching out in a time of dire need. My mother, Alice McBride, passed away on November 12, 2023, without insurance, leaving me with the overwhelming burden of funeral expenses.

I dedicated myself to caring for her while she was in hospice and had to downsize to a one-bedroom apartment afterward. Currently, I’m juggling three jobs: security at night, substitute teaching during the day, and dual-enrollment classes for two high schools. Yes, I am physically exhausted.

Despite my efforts, I’m drowning in financial obligations. I’ve fallen behind on rent, and my car is on the brink of repossession. I have $29,000 in credit card debt and $115,000 in student loans, both past due.

Above all, I need to settle my mother’s mortuary bill and fulfill her wish to be laid to rest beside her grandmother in our family plot in Alabama. The remaining amount needed to settle her bill is $1,600, and to send her home and to have her remains put away properly with a headstone would likely be around another $5,000. This act would provide closure for us all.

I created a GoFundMe account, and out of the 22 people who contributed, we were only able to raise $2,700 out of the original $4,300 goal.

I am here because this last year has been a tornado of loss and pain and I would be beyond grateful for the support to rebuild my world. The year started with my father loosing his 30 + year business, my parents being kicked out of there house, my dad breaking his hip, me having to move and relocate, me also getting injured.. and once I thought there was a moment to rest I had to put my dog down and my mother suddenly pass over the holidays.. my heart is broken. The loss of my beloved mom and pet has been devastating emotionally to say the least. My name is Ashley, January 5th my world took a turn into the new year I didn’t expect. I’ve been living  with a family friend now for a couple years. She graciously allowed me and my children to stay with her as I got back on my feet all  while fleeing a toxic relationship.
