Please help me to stop treading water

I am a 60-year-old wife and mother living abroad with my husband and our 17-year-old son, who is in his final year of high school.

A bit about my situation: I am a professional singer, and my husband operates a small burger shop. Unfortunately, the past few years have been challenging for us financially. Before the pandemic, I was in steady demand and worked nearly every day. However, when the pandemic hit, my performance opportunities and pay significantly decreased. To manage expenses like food, school uniforms, and a new computer for my son, I had to dip into my savings, which are now nearly depleted.

My income dropped from around $7,000 per month to barely $1,000–$2,000. I have had to rely on loans from friends and family to make ends meet, a position that has been both humbling and difficult. My husband’s burger shop is currently $25,000 in debt due to loans he took to keep it running during the pandemic. Repayment on these loans begins in December, and despite our best efforts, we are struggling to find a way forward.

I am a retired mechanical engineer from Sri Lanka and looking forward to start a project on vehicles accident repair, painting and interior detailing.

 

Automotive Painting has been in the Sri Lankan market for years. Most affordable automotive paintwork is done in small garages exposed to outside atmosphere and has no controls over the atmospheric pollution. This system also has restrictions on painting during rainy or wet weather thus creating delays in completion of the jobs.  As a result, the final product is not up to quality standards when compared with the Automotive Painting Industry in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong or South Korea. These countries use latest technology such as heated “Paint Booths”, Media Blasters, Air tools etc., even in a lower end wayside garage that undertakes painting work.

The proposed “Project” will be of high tech and will use the state-of-the-art plant and equipment. However, there are few units run by leading automotive agents which use such technology.

It is proposed to source a paint booth manufactured to highest quality standards using the latest technology. A precision-made paint booth which is designed to fit any painting requirements, such as to do custom restorations, painting semis or small parts or even motorcycles will help servicing a wide range of customers. Furthermore, paint booth accessories, exhaust fans, filters, lifts, compressors and power tools that are to be used in the project will be of high quality.

Use of latest state of the art technology will help providing a quick quality service to the customer and a safe and healthy work environment to the employees.

As the vehicle market is increasing rapidly and the number of vehicles on the road increase many Sri Lankans are looking for something unique and something that stands out from the rest. Some look for exclusivity, some look for sportiness but everyone is looking for something that expresses their current personality or status through the vehicle they own; a head turner on the road. I intend catering to this particular market in a big way.

The total cost of the project inclusive of construction of the buildings and working capital requirements is estimated at approximately US$ 50,000. I have approached the banks and they have indicated that they can grant me a loan up to 80% of the cost of the project. That leaves a balance of US$ 10,000 which I have to find to fund the project. By disposing of some personal assets, I will be able to find about US$ 5,000 to fund the project. Therefore, I am still short of US$ 5,000 to go ahead and implement start the project.

To make the collapsing roof of the home

First of all, thank you for considering reading this. I live with my old parents. My parents are 85 and 78 and have no income. The father receives a monthly allowance of 1,900 rupees ($6.33 per month) from the government, barely enough for two days’ worth of food. They have been sick for a long time.

I am working and I get a monthly salary of Rs 48000 (US$ 160 per month). A lot of things have to be done with that salary. Salary has to be spent very sparingly. I pay all our expenses like food expenses, medical expenses, bill payments, loan installments. As the salary is not enough for daily expenses, I do a little self-employment. My mother is  hearing impaired. She wants to buy a hearing aid.

But that is not my question. Our entire family is affected by the roof that is going to collapse in my house. I  Can’t even get a loan because the salary is not enough. I am from Sri Lanka. The economic condition of our country also affects it. I am very depressed. I try not to think about it, but I always see the roof when I go to sleep. It seems to fall on our heads at any moment.The area where we live gets rain all the time so the house is always wet with rainwater. Rainwater leaking from the roof wakes us up from deep sleep. It is stressful for my parents as well as unhealthy.

This house was built by my father and the roof is made of wood and tiles taken from an old house.That is why the house’s walls are in good condition but the roof is rotten. I already have some wood for the roof. More wood, roofing sheets, nails, etc. must be purchased. Labor hire is required to construct the roof. But I have no money to spend.

If I wait any longer, we may be in danger. I want my parents to live the little time they have left without difficulty. I am currently unable to find the money for it. Kind support for 4 members family for financial hardships.

I am 67 years old. I and my wife are not doing any jobs at present as we are not fit for working. We are all 4 family members with our 2 daughters who are studying at 2 universities. I was doing a buying and selling business (An old car,one by one ) but now it has to be stopped. For years, I managed to make the payments, but the situation became more challenging after I lost my job due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He found a job whenever he could, but he couldn’t pay the debt. The bank initially understood and gave me a long grace period but now that period is over.

My family situation
I got married in 2017 as per my father’s request. My wife who is now 35 years old and I have a 3 year old daughter. Unfortunately, due to the financial difficulties we were facing, my wife and I were constantly at loggerheads. She was working in an organization, but after our daughter was born, she also had to take care of my mother, father and our daughter at home. This situation caused her great distress and finally her parents came and took her and our daughter away. Although this will ease some of the pressure during this difficult time, I am determined to make things right and reunite with my family.

This house is near a very famous government hospital. Therefore, my mother’s illness was treated by the doctors of that hospital for a long time. This cannot be sold suddenly. Even if you sell it, you have to go to a very distant area after that. A lot of money has to be spent to bring the mother back to the hospital. So for me this place is very important until my mother is alive.

If I can get this help as soon as possible, I will be able to save my house first, and then I can focus on supporting my family from my current job.
