I am a native of the Bay Area and a first-generation Mexican-Costa Rican college graduate. As the youngest of three siblings and the only woman, I naturally assumed the role of provider. I was the only one who fulfilled my parents’ aspirations of completing college and entering the corporate world. As a provider, I was seen as reliable, and I found it difficult to refuse my close family and friends.
However, through many life lessons and hardships, I realized that some people are only present when they have access to you and your resources, and once those are gone, you find yourself alone. I was in a four-year relationship with someone who used their mental health as an excuse for poor behavior and an inability to hold a steady job. Fearing they might harm themselves, I felt pressured to cover their bills.
Years of taking care of others left me with no savings and maxed-out credit cards. Despite my kindness and generosity, I am now facing financial difficulties. I don’t want to change who I am, but I have learned the importance of being selective about who I help.
I am seeking an opportunity to start over. I recently secured a position with a company in the trash and recycling sector, a field I have always dreamed of working in. With these positive changes, I am seeking $100,000 in funding to distance myself from my toxic family and focus on building a stable and independent life.
Kindness always reciprocates. Thank you for your generosity.
