I am a recent retiree who has tragically lost so much of my retirement monies in recent months (old creditors, IRS debt, vehicle repairs, losses, etc.).
I will soon be taking my widowed elderly mom and her friend to an anticipated convention just 1 hour from our hometown. Each of us stresses over money for any extras in life, and though this event will be uplifting, I’m especially frustrated that funding is stealing some of my anticipation — and surely theirs.
Yet I dare to dream of making this event even more eventful and a bit of surprise for mom and her friend. Each of them is courageously and graciously dealing with life changes not so enviable. As for me, my life has been spent working hard as a single mom providing for my children’s needs. Neither of us three women have had the resources or circumstances to travel even a little, though I made sure my children got to experience that perk from time to time.
I now envision thrilling my mother by turning our convention trip into a mini-vacation of sorts, complete with a less cramped and rough riding vehicle than I currently drive, an airbnb find in the area boasting a cozy quiet setting complete with her coveted porch and a kitchen both of these old-fashioned cooks can prepare some meals in. Plus room to invite some of her old acquaintances (and mine) over each evening if she so desires. Throw in an extra day or two to relax before and after the convention. All without the trauma over money. No upping my credit card debt and killing the credit rating I have clawed to attain.
This complete package would be doubly invaluable for both me and mom. Given her age and mobility issues, I know I have few opportunities left to carry something like this out, even without the monetary obstacles. Thank you for considering my request.
