Nine years ago, after a brief five-month stint as empty nesters, my husband and I took in four children from hard places after their mother (our niece) committed suicide. Their biological father was in jail for raping the mom several times. Nine years later, we still have two of the children at home: the 16-year old boy has been diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, ADHD, and Sensory Processing Disorder. His sister has been diagnosed with ADHD. My husband has lost his job three times in the last nine years due to COVID and financial struggles of the companies he worked for. He is now working on setting up his own consulting business. I teach classes online as an adjunct at a local university: the pay is much less than minimum wage. We have had to max out two of our credit cards just to survive; and although we are making minimum monthly payments, it has been a discouraging six months. Retirement is out of the question although most of our friends have already stopped working. Ours is not a unique story as times are hard for everyone. Any help would be much appreciated.
