I’m reaching out with vulnerability and hope in my heart.
Several years ago, my life changed forever when my beloved husband was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. It was only after his death that I discovered our life insurance policy had lapsed—he had missed a payment, and I was left not only grieving but also unprepared financially.
We had always planned for stability. But instead, I was left with his outstanding debts, and shortly after, our son—who had been awarded a full scholarship to college—lost his funding in his final year. Determined to help him graduate, I borrowed $20,000 in Parent PLUS student loans so he wouldn’t have to abandon his education. He worked two jobs, but it wasn’t enough. As a mother, I did what I felt I had to do.
Then, I lost my job. For over two years, I could only find part-time work. During this time, I defaulted on the student loan, and with compound interest and penalties, the balance ballooned to $95,286.34—an overwhelming burden I’ve been trying to chip away at ever since.
I’m working again and making payments, but the weight of this debt has prevented me from moving forward. I can’t move or get a fresh start. I’m stuck—not for lack of effort, but because of circumstances beyond my control.
