Dreams of a Future Counselor

Hello! I want to start off my thanking you for taking the time to read my post.

Ever since I was a child, I would spend any free time I had helping my mom who was a teacher at a low income elementary school in East LA. My mom was my hero, and I had the pleasure of watching her touch the hearts of every student who walked into her classroom. At the time I wasn’t sure what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I knew I wanted to spend my life helping others too. Unfortunately, before I could start my journey, my mother passed suddenly. She never had the opportunity to see me enter college, but she was and still is my inspiration.

I was able to work through community college, but by undergrad I began taking loans to help with the cost. It was a lot to do by myself, but I’m proud to say I was able to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. I spent the next few years saving money while working for a crisis program providing support to individuals with developmental disabilities. It was an incredible experience, but I wanted to do more. So I decided to go back to college to get a masters degree in counseling.

My dream is to provide counseling services to youth and their families in low income areas.  More specifically, I really want to work with troubled youth in these areas who either are in or are at risk for being placed in a juvenile detention center. I think back to the impact my mom was able to make in her students lives, and if I can be a resource for one child within my lifetime, it would all be worth it. Mental health support and early intervention is something I’m extremely passionate about.

I’m excited to say that I have was accepted into a program in California, unfortunately the cost of living and cost of attendance is way more than I anticipated. Not only are loans piling, but they are not enough to fully cover food, rent, or transportation. I am trying to work on the side, but at this point it’s a day to day struggle.

If you have made it to the end, I am so grateful to you for listening to my story. If you are in a place in which you are able to help me along my journey, I would be forever grateful. I will link my paypal below. Regardless, I hope you have a beautiful rest of your day!
