Hi,
I was recently in the process of switching jobs, and intended to only take 1 week off between jobs (PTO). My last day as a hospice RN case manager was 03/31/24.
I had an orientation start date with hospital, set for Monday 04/08/24. On Sunday 04/07/24 I went roller skating at a rink with my kids, for a birthday party. Unfortunately, I fell onto my left side, with the first point of contact to the hardwood was my left elbow. I went to Urgent Care and was informed that I had a fractured left elbow, and would be unable to work for the time being. They splinted my arm/elbow and placed a sling. I am left-handed, so this has been an interesting experience. I am making progress though. This is the first time I’ve been able to type without excruciating pain.
My orthopedic doctor says that if everything goes to plan, I should be able to return to work in 6-8 weeks. Since I had not yet started with this hospital, they are under no obligation to provide me with any kind of light duty.
I am a nurse that was hired to work for an inpatient rehabilitation unit. Most of these patients just had a serious stroke/other serious injury, that leaves them heavily dependent upon nurses for care. With rigorous physical/occupational therapy, the goal is to help them learn how to walk again & complete normal daily activities (bathing, toileting, changing clothes/shoes, getting in/out of a mock car, etc). I need to be able to lift 50 lbs and have full range of motion of my arm, before I can start this position.
I am a single mom, and this has made me a nervous wreck. Money (or lack thereof) is all I can think about. I have already used what I have in savings, for medical bills. If you’re able to help, I would be so grateful !!
