I am a single mother of two boys age 17years and 11years old with the younger having special needs. I used to work in Finance selling loans, but I gave up employment 5 years ago to care for my younger son full time. Giving up employment was not an easy decision but considering my son’s needs I had to.
Financially I have struggled with my children, but it has got worst since the passing of my father three years ago. The cost of his funeral rest solely on me which not having any savings I could only pay for by means of credit cards. Last year my dear grandmother passed away and again credit cards was the only source I had that I could use to pay for her funeral. Since then, I have been trying to pay off these credit cards, but the issue is I can only afford the minimum payments which does not help much in reducing their balance. I am also repaying a high interest loan which I took to pay for my immigration application. I am at the place now where I am borrowing from friends and at times having to ask for more time to repay them even though it may be a small amount I borrowed. It is getting increasingly difficult to get by as a single mother caring for a special needs child.
Just recent I was faced with the predicament of having to tell my older son heading out for school that I do not have any money to give him but that he could use my credit card to buy what he needed to eat but when he called me to say “Mom your card declined” I cannot express enough the emotions I felt then. Yes, I held it together on the call with him, but I broke down as soon as the call ended. I truly am feeling like I have failed in doing the basics. I have tried on several occasions for a consolidation loan to reduce my out goings as now I am really struggling with the payments and to keep myself afloat with the household bills, but I have been declined on every occasion as I have maxed out my credit cards which has caused my credit score to drop. If I can clear these credit cards and repay this high interest loan, I would be so relieved of all this financial stress that is weighing me down.
