My name is Amanda Jo, and I am a 39-year-old single mother raising my 16-year-old son on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Like many local families, I have struggled with the extremely high cost of housing in an area where rental prices have increased far beyond what many working residents can afford. I receive food assistance and Medicaid, but there is very limited affordable housing available here, and there are no realistic public housing options for my situation. My entire support system is here, including my parents, grandmother, brother, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and lifelong community connections. Leaving the area would mean losing the family support that my son and I rely on. My biggest obstacle is not the monthly rent itself, which is roughly $2,000 a month, but the large upfront costs required to secure housing, including the security deposit, first and last month’s rent, and other move-in expenses, which total approximately $6,500. Once established in a home, I am confident in my ability to maintain monthly housing expenses. Any contribution, no matter the amount, will help bring my son and me one step closer to stable housing. Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for any support you may be able to provide. God Bless!
