Struggling Family In Need

It’s rather tough to put this out there, but here we go.

Last year, my girlfriend moved across the country to be with me. After a fairly lengthy long-distance courtship, we felt it was time to move forward. She landed a somewhat decent job and as I too was already employed, we thought we were headed in a really solid direction. She has a son that is autistic. We didn’t directly move him here as we knew that the care he was being provided in California (I live in Ohio) was far better than what he’d receive here, so his father agreed to keep him until we were able to establish the proper care for him in our neck of the woods. Sounds like a great thing, right?

Things got difficult. Her son’s father quickly began to grow weary of “raising” his son and demanded that he join us here, well before we were able to establish care for him and promptly put him on a plane to Ohio. Being that my girlfriend’s job was far better than my own, we quickly made the decision that I would leave my job and stay home with her son until we were able to get him into the system. We thought it would be an easy task, but as this is a new state for him, all the testing and diagnosis’ he obtained in California meant NOTHING here in Ohio and thusly, the process starts over once again.

Fast forward six months. We’re still awaiting the system to do their end of the job. He’s seen a doctor. The recommendations have been given. His insurance has been accepted by the specialist, but there’s nothing that can be done until they actually get him in. There’s a waiting list. We can’t even place him in school until he’s been evaluated. So, I haven’t been able to work. Can’t leave a special-needs child unattended for more than a few minutes. Even remote work is proving to be difficult as there’s not peace and quiet. To make matters worse, our living situation is close to ending as our landlord has suddenly decided to put the house on the market.

Don’t get me wrong, we still have one source of income, so we’re not completely destitute, but between bills, a car payment, food and the ever increasing cost of general living, we’re really starting to struggle. It’s becoming difficult to make it all work even paycheck-to-paycheck. I’d walk into a job tomorrow if it were just me, but it isn’t. Alas, I’m humbled. I don’t know if this will work and I surely don’t expect other hardworking individuals to fall on the sword for our misfortunes, but it can’t hurt to ask. Regardless of how this falls, thank you for your time. Be well.
