I’m a 45 yr old guy that is on disability. However, I managed to land a job painting which was supposed to be a couple week gig, that ended up lasting almost a year and a half. Last Oct I was laid off unexpectedly, but was eligible for some unemployment insurance. For anyone unfamiliar with unemployment insurance, it takes some time to be processed and accepted, and during that time I feel behind on all my bills and rent and was soon given an eviction notice which I fought in tribunal court and was given a payment schedule in Feb of this year being Ive been here over 4 years now without any previous issues. Part of that agreement was that I pay my rent on time and then by the 20th of each month I pay a further $600 until I was caught up, and if I were a dollar short or a day late, the rental agency could then go straight for an eviction. Well come June after ensuring I had more than enough in my account to cover my rent, which had gone up in June, my bank Simpili Financial decided to put through a smaller charge ahead of my rent, which made me less than 60 cents short n my rent causing an NSF fee, which I didn’t know anything about until I went to make the $600 payment 2 weeks later. By then the rental agency had filed for eviction without even calling me, and within 3 or 4 days of me realizing the bank’s mess up I was served with the eviction. Looking on my bank statement you can clearly see the agency taking out the money, which was all there, then some other smaller item or two listed the the rent payment coming back NSF and the banks $10 NSF fee. When I contacted the bank and asked them how that had happened, they agreed it was indeed their fault, and returned my $10 NSF fee, which I explained that doesn’t much help with them now making me effectively homeless, which they were nice enough to apologize for! So thinking I was totally screwed anyway I paid some bills that were behind and though Id stay here as long as possible. Then talking to my ex girlfriend, whom I’m still good friends with that happens to be a social worker in the community, was told she was pretty sure I could rebut the eviction which turned out to be true and I now have another hearing on Aug 11th, which I’m now going to be way short on the rent being I paid some bills down thinking I was already out of luck as far as my apartment goes. So I’m asking for help to raise $5000 to cover the past due rent, this new mess I find myself in, plus the NSF and filing fees Ill have to pay for regardless of if the judge agrees it wasn’t my fault and I’m allowed to stay. Homelessness has always been my greatest fear in life, and never before have I been in this situation, and it’s been unbelievably hard to even come to ask for help, but I’m really out of options. A lot more has happened since my lay off, but these are the main points. I’m more than happy to answer any questions to anyone that may want to make a donation but has a few questions first.
