Over the past year I have been struggling to get my teenager the mental health care they need. Last year insurance paid out over $100,000, which was great to have that coverage… However, through the various providers I had multiple $300 copayments for intake. In the fall I had to take early maternity leave to care for her at home which reduced our income. I put these payments on credit cards as we did not have the funds in cash. Coming into 2023, with my maternity leave ending in March/April, I went back to work. Soon after, I had to call out to take her to the Emergency room. Unfortunately, as I had used all family leave during my maternity leave, I was let go from my job. Trying to care for her and searching for a way to work without her being alone at home I decided to deliver newspapers overnight until I could find something else. This did not fit our income needs and I continued trying to make things work by paying my utility bills on credit cards. In the past year and a half we have now racked up $30,000 in credit card debt. Our cards are maxed, we are drowning in minimum payments (over $1,300 a month) and are having a card time seeing a way out with no family that can assist. I have contacted a company to look into a DMP to help make our debt more manageable. We have also taken in another teenager as of August who does not have parents to care for them. I am now working but it is not enough to catch up on bills and cover basic needs. I do instacart when I’m not working my regular job to try to cover childcare costs I’m also doing instacart. I also am a part time student. I understand that I need to increase our income by any means possible, so I am going to school to raise my value in the work force. Any help is appreciated.
