Hi, my name is Alison, and I am not a person who asks for help if possible.
I’m 58 years old and I have multiple sclerosis. I am unable to work.
I just received a letter from the land Court in Boston notifying me they are going to foreclose on my home for outstanding property tax obligations.
I receive $900 from Social Security every month. There is no mortgage. This house has been in my family since 1970, when my dad built it, and I moved in to take care of him before he passed in 2005.
I was under the erroneous impression that the property taxes that have accrued would be collected from my estate after I pass.
Attorneys I have spoken to are either unable or unwilling to assist me. I am still waiting for other agencies to call, but I am very scared. I lost most of my family during covid and I have no one to help, and nowhere to go.
With my very limited income, I really have very little room to negotiate a monthly payment. I am qualified for state property tax relief, but the town never informed me of that. It would cover 90% of my property taxes per year, and the town would fund the rest.
Had I known I would have made sure I was enrolled years ago.
I did not know until I got the letter that this was going to happen. I have to respond to the court. The hearing is over 3 hours from my home.
The total they are requesting just over $50,000, but more than 60% of that is interest. I do not understand how that works.
It is my greatest hope that I can put together some money so I can approach the judge with some funds, and perhaps have some of the interest abated.
I have never been this afraid. I have nowhere to go.
Blessings, and thank you in advance for your kind consideration.
Please help me stay in my home.
