My dear friend and her son need help purchasing the house they have called home for 10 years. A close family member rented it to them through an extraordinarily challenging time but must now sell it because of health issues. They were told to move out by December 31, 2026. We are asking our family, friends, neighbors, and community to help them remain in the one place that provides the stability and safety they desperately need.
It is a familiar, detached living environment that can be managed around my friend’s serious medical needs. Losing it would mean losing a decade of stability and trying to find housing that is both affordable and safe for her health.
My friend lives with mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), which can cause severe symptoms throughout the body. Fragrances first triggered intense headaches, and in 1994 she nearly died from anaphylactic shock. By 2002, she needed a respirator to leave home. Her sensitivities now include fragrances, along with cleaning products, leaf smoke, certain foods, and ingredients in some medications. Everyday environments that most people can enter without a second thought can be dangerous for her. Her family has endured repeated loss. Her dad moved in with them after a heart attack in 2010. An old injury to her husband’s back worsened while helping care for her dad. Her husband progressively worsened with an increase in the need to use the wheelchair and becoming more bedbound.
Her dad passed away in 2015. Several months later they lost their home. A close family member rented this house to them. Her husband was diagnosed with tongue and throat cancer at the end of March 2023. A few months later the family decided on home hospice care. My friend and her son cared for him until he passed away in July 2023.
During that overwhelming period, my friend missed doses of blood-pressure medication and suffered three strokes. She lost the ability to read simple words, do basic math, consistently distinguish everyday objects, and find words. Online speech therapy helped, but she still experiences word-finding problems and dyscalculia, which affects numbers and spatial reasoning. She is on multiple medications including insulin and relies on her son for help and medication reminders.
Her son lives with chronic, debilitating migraines while helping care for her. Their two beloved dogs are also part of the family. Because environmental triggers can cause serious reactions, apartments, duplexes, and other attached housing units are unsafe. They cannot afford to rent another detached house and the estimated two- to three-year wait for Section 8 assistance extends beyond their deadline.
The most practical solution is to help them purchase the home where they have lived safely for 10 years. It would let them remain in a familiar environment, keep their dogs, and avoid the health risks and instability of displacement.
