To start with I must say that my wife and I have never been this broke in our entire life. We are in our mid 70s now and on social security. Between Covid and the economy sending prices and interest through the roof, we are sinking deeper than we have ever thought was possible. I don’t know where you are in the world but my wife and I have lived in New Mexico, USA for the past 2 and a half years. We have been married for 33 years and have been in the entertainment business together for about 34 years together and have received several awards for our singing and music. We play guitar and bass as well as sing in beautiful harmony as a Duo. We were in Arizona for almost 10 years and had a nice gig there singing at a nice dinner/show until Covid hit us and shut everything down completely in Feb of 2020. The owners decided not to re-open the place, and put it up for sale after having been open for about 24 years. That left us out of work having to start over. We did receive some Covid relief money from the Government for a while but that came to an end way too soon. So we decided to sell our house in Arizona and move to New Mexico so we could be close to family because of all the turmoil going on in our country today. We didn’t have enough equity in our AZ home to carry us too far.
We have been going down hill since Covid and finally had to start paying bills with credit cards until we got some money coming in. I thought that would surely have happened by now. My wife had a total knee replacement about 6 months ago and is getting ready to have the other one replaced early next year so she isn’t getting around too well at this point. We have our social security income and are doing the music at the church we go to which pays us an additional $750/mo. Our social security covers our rent with a little left over and the $750 from the church just barely gets us by. As I write this letter we only have $366 in the bank with 0 in savings. Our social security checks will hit the bank tomorrow but the rent will take up about 75% of that. I just recently sold the only extra guitar I had for $1500 and also took out a $1,000 title loan on our 04 Chevy Tahoe which I just yesterday made my second payment on. We are looking every day for a cheaper place to rent but rentals are close to non-existent in our town. The only houses available at this point would cost us more than what we are paying now which is $1500/mo. Rent has gone up just like everything else. If we don’t get some relief of some kind by the end of this month we will be forced to move to another town where the rent is cheaper and away from our family. We are now about a month behind on our rent and don’t know how much longer our landlord is going to put up with that. Unfortunately our family is not able to help us with finances nor a place to live. Our church has helped us out some also in addition to what they are paying us but it just isn’t enough to keep us going very long. The one credit card we do have is maxed out as of this month and we will have a hard time making the payment on it in Dec. We have had a few music gigs scattered here and there but not many and not enough to keep us going. We have a Christmas party coming up in early December that will pay us $300. We are currently contacting a list of Churches my wife put together to see if we can do a Christmas concert for them as Churches have always been a true blessing for us when we do our music there so maybe something will happen there. We are also doing our music at the local senior center for tips once or twice a month but that only pays us about $40 to $50 each time. I am looking into work from home opportunities on the internet as well because at our age, it’s pretty hard to find a regular job. We are supposed to be retired but unfortunately neither one of us had a retirement fund to fall back on. That’s just one of the many mistakes we have made over the years. We are keeping our thermostat set at 58 to 60 degrees depending on how cold it is, just to keep our heating bill as low as possible without totally freezing to death. We are constantly looking for ways to cut our expenses and increase our income but it just isn’t happening fast enough. My wife is about fed up with being cold all the time and ready to move back to Arizona. I can’t blame her for that. We had our first snow here just this morning.
I am not going to ask for a specific amount of money here because I believe God knows what we need to get us out of trouble and I believe he led me to this web site for a reason and I am just asking for whatever God lays on your heart to help us with. We would be extremely thankful for anything you can do to help. I have been as open and honest as I know how to be. All I can say is that we need some real help ASAP and we will be forever grateful for it whatever it is. We would even be open to coming and singing for you if you are not too far away. I can give you more information about us regarding all that upon request. Thank you so very much for your consideration.
May God Bless you and your family,
Jm Martin
