My daughter and I left an emotionally abusive relationship in April of 2022. We found a rent to own mobile home about an hour away from our abuser. I noticed that it needed some work, nothing that I couldn’t handle since I had been a general contactor previously. The manager did not disclose any thing alarming, and I guess I should have known better. I had a really great job that paid really well and for the first few months we were doing great. Then in May of 2022, I was in a car accident while working and it totaled my car. As a car was necessary for me to do my job, my dad helped me get another one right away, and I was back doing what I loved doing and was good at it. In August of 2022. I was in another accident that not only totaled out that car, but broke my foot as well. I had to be off of work for 8 weeks. I had short term disability so we were okay. Got another car, a not so great one, but a car nonetheless. My oldest daughter and my 2 yr old grandson fled an ugly situation and moved in with me in October of 2022. In November of 2022, I was let go from that job stating that I was customer impacting and a liability to the company due to the accidents. I applied for unemployment and was denied. I filed an appeal, but in the state of Texas, if the company doesn’t acknowledge the appeal, it gets thrown out in their favor. So, I did not have any income coming in what so ever. My oldest daughter was trying to find a job, but was having difficulties and my youngest, who is on the autism spectrum, was still in high school at this time. Luckily, we had a family member that was helping us pay the rent and some other bills and my daughter and I were doing things like DoorDash and anything that we could to make what money we could.
To top off the year, I still had my abuser’s truck on my car insurance because I was told that I had to since we were still married. He let his daughter borrow his truck one day and she got into an accident, totaling the other car. She filed a claim on her insurance, who in turn filed one with mine. Well, in the state of Texas, insurance follows the vehicle, not the driver and since she was not on our insurance and I was the primary policy holder, her claim fell on my record. So, between the two accidents I had, and the one she had, and the deer I hit in November of 2021, I had 4 claims on my insurance. These are all really long stories, but to make this as short as possible I will just say that, by just plain bad luck, all of those show as “at fault” accidents. They are all on my record, including the one that was done by someone else.
I finally found a job in February of this year, but took a $15k pay cut. However, we made it work as best as we could. Then, in April I started having issues with my car, and was finding it difficult to make the 2 hour, 65 mile commute to and from work every day. I got let go from that job in June. I was able to get unemployment for that one, and we have since been approved for food stamps, but we were already from March to June behind on payments and lot rent. I was having to replace tires on my car every couple of weeks, and then it got repossessed. I was able to get it back thanks to the help of family. Then had to replace the rear wheel bearings in it.
I have since found another job, but with this job, I make almost $20K less than what I was making with the original job that was keeping us independent and not needing any help. My daughter has a job as well, but….
Let me now go into the issues with the mobile home that have come to light during all of this other unfortunate events. The night I was moving in, I fell through the stairs on the front deck, damaging my knee. The wood was beyond rotted and could not support my weight along with the additional weight of carrying boxes and stuff. I let the manager know right away and never got a response from her. A week later, I fell through the stairs of the back deck as well. Luckily I was able to catch myself before hurting myself. The manager told me about a leak that was in the roof of the bedroom my grandson now sleeps in, but she had told me that it had been repaired. That was a lie. The ceiling has gotten so much worse. There were dead trees in our yard that had huge pieces of it falling off onto the roof of the house and even broke one of the windows. The AC doesn’t work all that well, because the duct work is in dire need of repair. Due to that, there are soft spots in the floor throughout the entire house. Literally from one end to another. My youngest daughter has fallen through the floor twice. I finally got the manager to come and look at them and they said that they would fix them but they were only willing to fix them in pieces and they couldn’t guarantee they get them done in one day. Which means they would leave holes open in the floor. My grandson could get hurt and no telling what critters could come up through them. Not to mention, I work from home and can’t have all of that sawing and what not going on while I am on the phone with customers and they refused to come do it on the weekend. I was then informed that they needed to replace the electric pole outside of the house and they told me that I would have to have my electric provider cut my electricity off for the entire day. I not only have my grandson here, but I have service dogs, and again, I work from home. Not to mention that they wanted this done in late July early August, which is the hottest part of the year in Texas and this year was brutal. It was 113 degrees at times and she was wanting me to turn the electric off for over 8 hours. I refused. I received a 10 day pay or quit from them saying that I owe over $10,000. I consulted an attorney who advised me that until they fix the issues or allow me to have them fixed and they remove the amount it costs me from what I owe, to not pay them anything. I can’t afford to pay it anyway. Even if I were to pay the current rent, it wouldn’t go towards that, it would go towards the past due, meaning that I would never get caught up.
To make this long story short, I have since been served with eviction papers and we have to go to court on Wednesday 11/08/2023. I don’t know what is going to happen, but I am sure that we are going to have to move. I don’t have the money to come up with the amount it is going to take to move, like the first months rent, security, and pet deposits. I don’t have anywhere I can stay as no one will let me stay with my dogs. If I end up homeless, I will have to quit my job, meaning I won’t have ANY thing coming in. I have had to send my youngest back to her dad’s (our mental abuser) because I can’t have her on the street.
I hate having to ask people for help, but I don’t know what else to do at this point. I just need the funds to be able to get out of this crappy mobile home and into a more structurally sound home for my kids, my grandson, my animals, and myself. I cannot tell you how eternally grateful I would be, and I vow to pay it forward as soon as I can.
Thank you in advance, and may you be blessed all the days of your life.
