I am a 31-year-old homeowner and a proud parent of five wonderful kids. Since birth, I have lived with Erb’s palsy in my right arm, which is a mild form of cerebral palsy. Unfortunately, I’m still in the process of getting approved for disability benefits, leaving me in a challenging situation.
I’ve owned my charming yet aging home for nearly seven years, and over that time, I’ve poured countless hours and resources into renovating it. The house, built in 1900, has its share of character and history, but the larger issues are starting to surface.
Currently, I receive a modest $500 monthly annuity, which will end in September 2025. This financial support is insufficient, resulting in a monthly deficit of $2,000. The burden of housing taxes, essential bills, and the cost of feeding my family has become increasingly overwhelming. I haven’t been able to pay my property taxes or water bill for over a year, as I struggle to keep the lights on, maintain heating during the cold months, and ensure my kids have what they need. On top of that, I try to provide a stable environment with Wi-Fi and a home phone for emergencies and entertainment.
The weight of these responsibilities is heavy, and the thought of giving up my home, where I’ve invested so much emotionally and financially, is heart-wrenching. I fear starting over in another place that could present the same or even worse problems.
Although I recently installed a brand-new furnace, my house feels like it’s trapped in an icebox. The windows are still the original ones from when the house was built, leaving us vulnerable to the biting winter cold. Additionally, due to unheated add-ons made by previous owners, my gas bill skyrockets as I crank the heat and rely on space heaters to keep us warm, which also leads to elevated electric bills.
I find myself at a crossroads, feeling desperate and in need of help to navigate this overwhelming situation. This situation has become incredibly overwhelming, but I am determined not to give up and sell my home after pouring so much effort and emotion into it. I fear starting over could lead to the same challenges. Though I have a new furnace, my house remains freezing because I lack the funds to upgrade the original windows, and due to unheated add-ons from previous owners, the gas bill is exorbitant. I find myself relying on space heaters, which only adds to the high electric bill. I urgently need assistance to turn this situation around.
