I found out totally by accident that my identity was stolen over a year ago. I had no clue. Whoever did this was damn good. The only reason I discovered it was my Aunt passed away about a month ago. She was 89 and had no insurance. As we all know, funerals are not cheap, so I dug out the one credit card I kept hidden for emergencies to put the entire amount toward the expense. Imagine my surprise when he came back into the room to tell me the card was declined. Not possible! It had only been used one time, and paid off immediately! So, I left, and started digging into the situation, trying to figure out what was going on. What I discovered broke my heart.
The more digging I did, the more I realized I was in serious trouble. There were at least a dozen credit cards in my name, some with balances over 5000.00, purchases made all over the internet, fake accounts in my name, car rentals, resort vacations, you name it, I did it (well, someone had that fun at my expense!) I was devastated, to say the least. Hours and hours of calls later, and was only able to remove two or three of the smaller accounts. I canceled what I could, but the damage was done.
From everything we were able to dig up, it is estimated I am well over 14,000.00 in debt, with nothing to show for it except the mess. How they managed to keep it hidden from me for so long is a mystery, but now it has all come raining down on me and I am sinking fast. I lost my car, my monthly payments just for the illegal stuff, is greater than my disability check, and that doesn’t include my utilities or other expenses. I have no idea how to fix it without reaching out for help.
I know there are millions with far greater problems than I, but I still had to give this a shot. I just need help putting a dent in the huge pile of bills, so I can maybe be able to pay my bills and find me another vehicle.
