It’s been a season of overwhelming grief and unexpected expenses. Things have piled up quickly, and I simply do not have the means to pay. One of the most urgent parts of my debt is an electricity bill for $1,196, due on May 23. When I traveled home to Africa for three months, I mistakenly forgot to close my PG&E account. I was only supposed to owe $117.65. But while I was gone, the new tenants used the electricity under my account. They’ve since moved out, and I haven’t been able to reach them.
Now PG&E is holding me responsible for the full amount. It’s heartbreaking and stressful, especially knowing that if this goes to collections, it could damage my credit score—and I’m already just trying to stay afloat.
