Finally Escaped, Now Where Do I Go?

Emerging from a 13-year physically abusive relationship marked a challenging chapter in my life. The toll was not only visible on my body—with over 20 broken bones, two knocked out teeth, a damaged chest cavity, and constant threats on my life with a knife held to my throat—but also on my mental well-being. At times, the darkness seemed insurmountable, contemplating the only escape as death. The scars I carry are not just physical. Efforts to seek help, including involving law enforcement, proved disheartening as he was released the next day, intensifying the danger. Leaving was a battle against control, with limited shelter options and the isolation orchestrated by my abuser. After many years of being told how to think and feel, learning to trust my feelings is exciting as well as scary.

Breaking free required a drastic change—I moved hours away, concealing my whereabouts even from my family for safety. Which as years of forced isolation from family my support system in non-existent. Coping with PTSD and social anxiety, I found solace in remote work and decided to embark on a college journey to rebuild my life. Although empowering, this fresh start brings its own set of challenges. Balancing the financial strains of housing costs, bills, and education while racking up student loan debt is a constant struggle. Nevertheless, my commitment to personal growth and financial stability remains unwavering.

Newfound independence is both liberating and overwhelming. Making decisions for myself after years of control is a process. Despite the stress, I am determined to forge ahead. Even if it means unconventional accommodations, such as sleeping in my truck, I am steadfast in my pursuit of a secure financial future through higher learning. Any assistance in covering rent, bills, food and sustaining my education would be profoundly appreciated. Returning to the past is not an option; it would mean returning to my hell on earth, filled with a life of torment, or worse. I hold onto life and strive to build a future where my decisions shape my destiny. I know everyone deserves a safe life, and I’m still fighting so hard to ensure one for myself. Please I can’t return to that life and right now I need just a little help. I want to believe with all of me that life does get better and doesn’t have to always be such a struggle just to survive. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read my story, regardless of money. God might have put on me to write on here to possibly give the courage to someone else. Life always has a silver lining, that’s what I tell myself, it helped me keep hope many times.
