I never thought I would be in this position, asking for help from strangers on the internet. But in the wake of a recent job loss related to injury and a lapse in health insurance coverage, I’m finding myself unable to meet my basic living expenses. So, I’m reaching out for a lifeline wherever there might be one. Perhaps you’re someone who can understand my situation; perhaps you have the compassion and financial resources to help….
I’m a woman in my late thirties living alone, and though I have what is considered severe inattentive ADHD, I’m normally fine without anyone monitoring me. I’ve worked extremely hard over the years to develop a system of routines that manages my condition effectively through medication, rigorous exercise, behavioral strategies, and time-awareness techniques structured into my day. I have a strong work ethic and a steady history of paying my rent and bills on time. I’m very proud of having maintained consistency in this regard for over a decade (it being anything but easy in my early adulthood.)
I recently had a physically active job that I was quite good at, but I left it due to a tendon injury in my hand that kept persisting and then worsened, despite eight months of wearing a brace. Having been told by my doctor that it could take six months to fully heal, I decided to quit and find a form of work that would allow it to do so.
Shortly after leaving, however, I experienced an unforeseen lapse in my health insurance coverage, leaving me without ADHD medication for two months. Putting aside how debilitating the withdrawal effects were, this disruption severely impacted my ability to concentrate and pursue employment opportunities diligently. My working-memory, problem-solving capabilities, and awareness of time were so defective, it was disorienting—compromising my efforts to be productive. It also wasn’t long before my entire system for managing my condition unraveled, amassing a pile of neglected responsibilities in its wake.
Thankfully, my health insurance was just recently restored, and with my medication back, I’m working to pick up the pieces. I’m re-establishing the behavioral regimens I had in place prior to the lapse and I’m actively continuing my search for suitable work within my physical limitations. However, my situation remains distressing as I face two months of unpaid living expenses, the current month’s dues, and the time it’s taking to restore stability to my condition—all while having no income to work with yet. I’m stressed at not being able to afford the basics, I’m afraid to lose my apartment in the middle of winter. The anxiety that I feel from the overwhelm has had me struggling with insomnia for the past week.
I am humbly seeking financial help for rent, utilities, loan and credit card bills, car insurance, and an emergency dental crown that my insurance won’t cover, totaling up to $5415. This amount would allow me to address my immediate needs and catch up on what’s overdue, so that I can focus on restoring my health and financial stability this month.
I want to stress that any contribution amount, no matter how small, would be helpful and deeply appreciated during this challenging time. Even $5 and a note of encouragement would be received with heartfelt gratitude. It would help me to not feel so alone in my struggle. Thank you if you’ve read this whole plea through to the end. I appreciate your time, consideration, and any aid you might be able to give.
