Hello,
My name is Oliver. I don’t come from much – my mother had brain cancer from the time I was 2 until she passed when I was 19. She raised me alone on a $750 disability check. My father refused to contribute financially to my well being after I graduated from high school, despite being my only, living parent after 2020.
I went to college on government money, and do not have much student loan debt, but I got a job as a news producer after I graduated and left that position after 2 years for what I thought was a better opportunity. It ended up being a multi-level marketing scheme, so I took a different job selling metal roofing, which I wasn’t good at.
I was unemployed for 3 months at the end of 2024 and had to live off of my credit cards, so I now have $5,000 in credit card debt which I’m not going to be able to pay. I also unfortunately wrecked my daily driver and cannot yet pay the $2,500 to fix it, I am currently limping the car back and forth from work, but not being able to go long distance has made it difficult to get to the doctor for blood work, and to the post office, etc. Now I’m a server/bartender making $1,000 a month after tax and struggling to keep a roof over my head.
I plan to go back to college for my master’s degree in Fall of 2025, but I am not making enough to pay my bills, let alone save money. I am trying to get another job or even two in the meantime, because I want to keep the job I already have so my work history isn’t tarnished by high turnover.
