My name is Joel, and I am wheelchair bound due to morbid obesity. I am unable to walk and currently rely on a manual wheelchair that is not designed for my body or medical condition. I also lack the upper body strength needed to push myself for any meaningful distance. Using this chair causes constant pain and discomfort, and in many situations, I cannot move at all without help.
Because of this, I rarely leave my home. The wheelchair is extremely heavy, and most people are unable or uncomfortable pushing it. As a result, I am home almost all the time, even during the summer. I cannot do my own shopping, and getting to medical appointments has become difficult and, at times, humiliating after being denied help or transportation due to the physical strain involved.
What I need is a heavy-duty electric wheelchair that can properly support my weight and allow me to move independently. This would dramatically improve my quality of life by reducing pain, protecting my health, and allowing me to attend appointments, shop for necessities, and leave my home without relying on others.
The cost of the wheelchair I need is approximately $3,500, which I cannot afford on my own. Insurance does not cover the type of wheelchair required for my condition, leaving me responsible for the full cost despite medical need.
