I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Angela and I am writing to you with a heavy heart, seeking financial assistance during a challenging time in my life.
In June 2019, I experienced a severe eye illness from having HSV 1 (basically shingles) in my left eye that has left me with irreversible damage, and despite the medical interventions undertaken, I have unfortunately lost all vision in my left eye. This life-altering event has not only affected my physical well-being but has also brought about unexpected financial burdens. I am an OTR truck driver of 30 years now. Which is definately a job that vision is a very important factor in order to do it safely. Unfortunately it has caused me to miss a lot of work since it came about. I have worked hard all my life and would never have dreamed it would come to me asking for financial assistance like this. I have taken out every kind of loan imaginable and got extremely too many credit cards that I have used to try to make it this far. But due to those loans and credit cards I put myself in a worse situation. And that is why I am coming to this solution.
The journey to this point has involved numerous medical consultations, surgeries, and rehabilitative measures, each accompanied by substantial financial costs. I have been to multiple cornea specialists. Including one of the countries very best at Duke University in North Carolina. I live in Alabama so it was definitely a tough decision to go all the way to North Carolina to see a specialist there. However, I was willing to try anything to help and hopefully have my vision and eye repaired. Regrettably, the medical professionals have conveyed that further interventions are no longer feasible, and I must come to terms with the permanence of my vision loss.
As you can imagine, adapting to a life with reduced vision presents significant challenges, both emotionally and practically. Daily tasks that were once routine now require extensive adjustments, and I am navigating a new reality that involves ongoing medical expenses, assistive devices, and most of all the impact on my career. I am still employed as a truck driver and will be until the day I literally cannot physically do it anymore. I am only able to obtain a DOT physical for 6 months at time now instead of the normal 2 year physical. I have to go through extensive steps now in order to get it as well which includes a visit with my eye doctor and the cornea specialist. I am required to have a document filled out and signed by them both in order to get my physical now. This has really took a major toll on my finances and will soon be to the point that I will no longer be able to see well enough to get a physical at all.
I am reaching out to your organization with the hope that you may consider providing financial assistance to alleviate the financial strain that has arisen from this unexpected and life-altering circumstance. Your support would not only help cover medical bills and ongoing healthcare needs but would also contribute to enhancing the quality of my life as I adapt to this new reality.
