I’m a 29-year-old mother, and my story begins in a world where addiction was not an exception but the painful norm. My mother and grandparents were all ensnared by addiction, a legacy I believe is rooted in the scars of colonization and the harrowing experiences of residential schools. These historical traumas have cast long shadows over my family, perpetuating a cycle of suffering that has been almost impossible to escape.Now, as a mother of three wonderful children, aged 11, 5, and 3, I am acutely aware that they deserve a life filled with love, stability, and opportunity—a life free from the grip of addiction and trauma. They deserve the chance to experience a normal childhood, with parents who are present, healthy, and nurturing.I have reached a point in my life where I am tired—tired of struggling, tired of being consumed by my own demons, and tired of the selfishness that addiction breeds.
