I am a single mom of two, and this past year has been one of the most challenging periods of my life. What began as a hopeful and promising year quickly turned into a battle for my daughter’s life and my family’s financial stability. In April, my one-year-old daughter fell ill. At first, her condition seemed minor, but as her symptoms worsened, we realized that she needed urgent medical attention. She was admitted to the local hospital, but due to limited resources and equipment, her situation deteriorated rapidly. Eventually, she had to be airlifted to a neighboring island to receive specialized care, including dialysis for her strained kidneys.
During this time, my daughter faced multiple life-threatening complications, including fluctuating heart function, meningitis, and necrotic toes. She had to be placed in an induced coma and intubated, and I watched helplessly as her tiny body fought to survive. I exhausted my personal savings because I no longer had health insurance after being made redundant from my previous job. Her medical expenses for the first week totaled EURO 19,2636.21 (approximately $22,925.00) and had to be paid upfront before her transfer. She remained hospitalized for two months, with an additional month of outpatient care on the neighboring island. Thankfully, through that island’s social assistance program, the balance of the hospital bill was covered, but I had to remain with my daughter for outpatient care for an additional month, unable to work or generate income during this time.
My baby’s recovery exceeded even the doctors’ expectations, but she was left with lasting reminders of her ordeal, including a partially amputated toe and a bald spot on the back of her head due to necrosis. These are the marks of her courage and resilience and serve as a daily reminder to never give up hope. Meanwhile, my sixteen-year-old daughter stayed with her grandparents, and I missed precious months of her life due to these circumstances.
Returning home, I faced overwhelming debt. My mortgage is now behind and my utility bills are unpaid. On top of this, my house requires urgent repairs, including fixing termite damage to the roof, repairs I had planned to pay for with my initial savings. I am now seeking financial assistance to stabilize my situation, pay off mounting debts, and secure a safe, stable environment for my daughters while I search for a new job. Any support would make a significant difference in helping us regain our footing and move forward with hope.
Every donation, no matter the size, will bring us closer to financial stability and provide a sense of security during this challenging time.
Thank you for your time and I do hope that you consider helping my family in our hour of need.
