Life can change in an instant. For me, a dedicated single mother of two and a Registered Nurse, 2024 brought unimaginable challenges. With the devastation of Hurricane Beryl, I lost everything I had worked so hard to build. I lost my property and car to the bank, then the hurricane did the rest, so I am renting a small apartment. As a widow navigating the loss of my husband, who suddenly passed away 7 years ago, the weight of my circumstances feels heavier with each passing day.
My unwavering commitment to my family drives me to continue my education and advance my nursing career. I have recently attained a BSc Degree in Nursing Studies with Distinction from Edinburgh Napier University, and am about to start a specialty program in Midwifery for another year, commencing in May 2026. However, the burden of tuition fees looms large. I know that with further studies, I can provide a better future for my children, but the path is fraught with financial obstacles, from medical bills, tuition fees, to daily living expenses. Each hurdle feels insurmountable when juggling the responsibilities of nurturing my kids and finding a way to heal from my profound losses.
