Hello. My name is William Hawkins. I’m from Richmond, VA and I’m a trumpet player with a deep passion for music. I am a Disabled Veteran having served for 10 years as a Military Musician. I will return to school full time as a Music Major and Non-profit Management minor at Virginia Commonwealth University in August of 2018. For those who don’t know, there are different levels of trumpets for different players. I am currently trying to raise money for a professional level trumpet of my own so that I can pursue my goals to become a Music Therapist. I do not own a personal trumpet as it was destroyed in a car accident and has used the Military’s trumpets since I joined in 2008. Because I was medically retired, I am currently unable to work but have decided to give back to my community to music therapy and other free services for low income households. This fundraiser will help me a great deal.
A little about me: I have been involved in music for over 20 years starting out as a percussionist before switching to Trumpet. Later I became a self-taught Piano Player and started playing piano and trumpet in the church setting as well as teaching free lessons to new students. I attended Norfolk State University as a Music Major before joining the Military as a Professional Military Musician. I earned the rank of Sergeant, deployed to Kandahar in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, served as Trumpet Player, Bugler at Military Funerals and ceremonies and Drum Major for two Military Marching Bands. I have volunteered and continue to volunteer my musical knowledge by offering free master classes, writing halftime/competition drills and music arrangements for high school marching bands and proving free lessons to students of the programs I’ve worked for as well. I have assisted schools in Kentucky, North Carolina and Virginia.
My Future Goals: My goals are to earn my Bachelors Degree in Music with a minor in Non-profit management. While teaching in all levels of education, I will open my own music studio dedicated to helping people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other trauma survivors. As you know PTSD doesn’t just affect Soldiers/Veterans but also Sexual Assault Survivors, car accident survivors and abused children just to name a few. My studio will focus on music as a positive coping mechanism to help these survivors try to live a normal life after suffering or witnessing traumatic experiences. I plan to run this studio completely FREE to those survivors. I will also be teach music lessons to children in low income homes on the Trumpet and Piano. I will continue to perform in my community and use my music therapy as a positive force to help people cope with issues that arise from PTSD and bring awareness to suicide and mental health.
Costs: The Trumpet itself is $3,650 Brand New. I am seeking a used horn between $2,750 and $3000. In closing: A trumpet, like a car, is a great investment. I have chosen the Adams A4 Trumpet. It’s a custom, handmade trumpet that will last a lifetime and comes with a serious warranty from the manufacturer. This Trumpet will help me learn, perform and educate. I greatly appreciate everyone’s donations in advance. It will not go to waste.
