For the past 2 years I have had many a struggle with Universal Credit in the UK. It began when I was sectioned under the mental health act over Christmas and new year in 2017. Since then I have been diagnosed finally with being on the autistic spectrum as well as suffering from depression and anxiety.
It took over a year for me to be placed on the correct benefits and during that time I was sanctioned 4 times for none attendance to work focussed interviews even though I had been handing in my sick notes. I was also placed into ‘supported accommodation’ where things only got worse for me. The majority of other individuals in need were addicts of some nature and unfortunately I got dragged into that world. For 4 months I was using both heroin and crack cocaine as well as being rinsed for every penny I had. The majority of my most prized items were stolen and it just spiralled further and further for me. People would remember my pay days and be knocking on my door or ringing me. They would be begging for money, promising to pay it back, making me feel guilty and if that didnt work threaten me.
Fortunately I am a strong willed person and after several months of this horrible situation I managed to pack my remaining items and get out of that place. I stopped all of the drugs on that same day and I am now a year on.
I spent the following months submitting all necessary mandatory reconsiderations and appeals to get my sanctions lifted. At one point I had one sanction lifted to be given another the following day! My mental health was at some of its worst still but I had to just keep battling through it and jumping through as many hoops as I could. A year on from being in hospital I was finally awarded the benifits I am entitled to with 18 months until it is reviewed.
Although all should be good now, the amount of money I recieve is just more than I need to get by. It is around the same amount as working a minimum wage job 40 hours a week. I would like to get back some of the items that were stolen from me.
I am a keen musician and would like to get a computer, software and some new instruments so that I can start recording my own music with the view of one day selling it. It will cost around £5000 to buy those items. I know that it is a substantial amount of money and would only ask for a small contribution towards it.
