Hi, my name’s Lea and riding has been my dream since I was like 13. Unfortunately before I could save up for my first bike, the person who offered it (dad’s friend) decided to keep it. I’ve used the saved money to move out from living with my dad. That was around 6 years ago. Since then I’ve worked through several jobs which paid less than appropriately and I’ve never really managed to save enough to consider buying a motorcycle.
I’ve also moved again since then, to hopefully get a better paid job, which unfortunately didn’t work out very well as I had to leave the job because it was very physically demanding.
Last year I got this old Yamaha in not-running condition as a gift from my girlfriend for Christmas. However she had an accident on the bike and it needs some repairs before it will be road legal (and safe) again. So far I am learning on the go and have managed to get it running to a degree.
What does the bike need?
New steering as it now has bent handlebars, brake overhaul – it has original brake lines from 1985, adjusting the carburators, new tyres (currently it has wrong size which won’t pass MOT) and MOT, fixing the fairing as it is cracked in several places from the fall and general maintenance. I am trying to learn as much as I can to decrease the costs by doing the maintenance myself, although some of it also requires special tools which I will try to either borrow from someone or need to buy.
I want to use the bike to ride to work, especially as public transport doesn’t have good connections everywhere and the sooner I can put it back on the road, the better.
I am currently unemployed, and although I am hoping that I will find a new job soon, my health is limiting me in the range of jobs I can apply for. I also have type 1 diabetes since I was 15 and also other medication which I have to pay for which is why it’s been rough to keep up financially, especially now without a job.
Having my own means of transport would greatly help in job selection since I wouldn’t have to rely on connections via public transport or could even work out of the city.
I would be very grateful for any financial support I can get, I will probably need somewhere between 500-1000 € to get the motorcycle fully operational but it is still cheaper than having a car at least.
If you’re considering donating or already have, thank you in advance and may you have a wonderful day!
