I live in a 100 apartment senior living building. Each month I write a newsletter for my neighbors. This can be anywhere from two to fourteen pages long. The management provides the paper. I pay for instant ink.
I run a craft group and have recently taken on the self defined role as activity director. We have several monthly events to bring people together. We’ve had pizza party’s, cake and ice cream, tea party, fairs and pot lucks.
Running these events is not cheap. We do ask for but do not require minimum donations from neighbors. Right now I am putting all this money for decorating, food and other expenses from my own pocket. Some events have cost me hundreds of dollars.
I know that I can make these events huge fun and get even more residents out of their apartments and having run. I am working with overage of $50. This isn’t going to last very long, and I only use this for necessary things. Food products, plates ets.
I would love to bring in same speakers to entertain. Perhaps some small shows. Anything to provide fun and happiness to my neighbors.
About me: I am 64 years old grandma to 10, great grandmother to 3. I try to be both positive and easy going. I try to make everyone I meet happier. It’s not always easy but I keep trying. I have agoraphobia. I am working hard to overcome this. I use to not be able to leave my apartment. I wanted to, I wanted to be social but the fear was too great. I realized the only way to be the person I wanted to be was to DO IT.
So I have. I still have trouble when I leave the apartment building even with friends, but I believe in baby steps.
By changing things for my neighbors I am changing me. I really want to be able to do so much more.
