Hello, my name is Arlo. I am the best friend and protector of my human, Deborah. She picked me up at a flea market when I was just 3 weeks old. (I was fully weened though.) I was the littlest one of nine puppies. There was very little room for me in my mommy’s tummy, so the toes on my right paw did not grow as all my brothers and sisters’ toes did. So, I got picked on until my now-mommy, Deborah, came along. I didn’t know it at the time but she was with a man who was not nice to her. When I got bigger, I couldn’t let him touch her. Even though I was scared and I may have gotten whooped myself, I defended her. She was so happy and grateful, and I liked that look on her. No more sad face with tears. So I still defend her against anyone who is aggressive. The only thing is…we got kicked out of where we lived. I didn’t do anything, honestly. I know I’m a little big and sometimes I get excited, but I don’t mean to make people mad. I really don’t. But we are now homeless. Mommy is sick. She has something called cerebral atrophy and she won’t be here for me during my entire life. She wants so badly to be able to play with me in a yard of our own. She doesn’t want to make herself sicker by worrying about bills and my food and doctor bills. She wants me to learn my manners too, but teaching me is hard for her and expensive if others do it. She thinks someone will try to shoot me or something. I don’t know ’bout that. I just know I want to see her happy and that would make me happy. We have no one else in the whole world. Can you help us, please? She says she can get a little piece of land for $10,000 and a little bitty home for $15,000. She thinks the bills will cost about $200 per month, not including my stuff. But to cover everything needed, like car insurance, phone, shots, and stuff, it should be about $500 in total per month for a couple of years. Maybe she will get this stuff called Social Security in the next year. We aren’t sure about training, but she says we should be okay if I can stay in the yard to run around instead of the streets like a street urchin. Whatever that is. But I will. I promise. And then before she goes to the place bey0nd, she will find me a good home, “she promises.” I trust her. I do. We have such good times. I’m not sad like she sometimes thinks I am. Really, I swear…
