A little bit of back story, first…
My husband and I were married 7 years ago, and were both in a bit of debt when we met. I found out my husband owed $14K in child support arrears (due to lack of work and some emotional health issues) along with other personal loans and credit card debts.
My first priority was to pay back his ex-wife the money she was owed, and then start working on the credit card and other debts. We paid off the ex-wife, and slowly started paying down the other debts.
We had been struggling to pay other bills like rent, utilities, etc. and I was forced to file Bankruptcy a few years ago – which helped with some of my personal debt.
When we thought we were finally getting back on our feet, we had a string of bad luck, with appliances dying, cars dying, and within 6 months of each other we were both laid off from our jobs. We ended up borrowing a LOT of money from friends and family just to survive, and now have very large monthly payments to try to pay back those debts.
We are both very hard workers and we do everything we can to make extra money to pay down our debts. From maintenance and yard work, to Uber, to dog-walking.
Unbeknownst to me (before we even met) my husband had adjusted his tax deductions, so that he would receive more money in his paychecks, and the taxes were not being properly taken out.
Once we got married, I started doing our taxes myself and asked him to correct his deductions – Not long after that, we started receiving letters from the IRS stating that the small refunds we were supposed to be receiving were now being applied to my husband’s old Tax debts. Turned out he had almost $30K in debt to the IRS. This went on for years, and our tax returns were very slowly paying down this huge debt.
We would keep receiving bills for this large amount and ignoring them, because we were barely getting by as it was and had no money at all to pay don this enormous debt. We have started receiving more and more notices and I am afraid they will take legal action soon if we cannot pay off this debt
Currently we have one bill from the IRS for $13K+ and another for $5K+ – Totaling $19K (see photo)
We still have a mountain of other debts we are working on paying down, but this one scares me the most.
Please donate what you can. Every little bit helps.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
