I am 65 years old. Never married and no children. I need $25,000 to pay high interest credit card debts. How did I get here.
I am my brother’s keeper. My life began to take form in 1985 just before
my 30th birthday. My younger brother started to have mental health issues.
Although my brothers heart is and has always been full of love, he was not a happy guy. He would stay with Mom for a few months and when things got too intense in his mind, he would move with me to Austin. He would work “Temp” jobs not lasting for too long. He would devour reading materials like “Catcher in the Rye” and also anything by Hal Lindsey, the writer of “apocalyptic” books at the time. He left his Catholic religion and started to find his way to the Christian apocalyptic religions that permeate our society to this day.
During this time, he met some fringe science religion types and they invited him to a weekend “retreat”. At some point, he was locked in a room with very loud
music (for hours) and managed to escape. We lost contact from 1987-89 as he was
living on the street. He had a psychotic breakdown on Dec 24, 1989. It was 20 degrees outside and with the wind chill it was 10. He had not slept in 3 days. The police called me and he was taken to a hospital, evaluated, and taken to a psych ward where he got meds for Schizophrenia.
Mom, left us 3 years ago. It’s been 24 years, since she called me and asked me to come home, that she couldn’t cope with my brother alone, not taking his Meds regularly and drinking too much. I left my $14.50/hr job and moved back home. We had a good run, even my brother was more stable. I was able to supplement my income as a research subject in medical studies.
Mom had other children, but only Mom and I advocated for my brother and in his hour of need, gave him shelter. He was 25, when his mind “broke”. He is almost 61 now. He would not let me declare myself as his “lawful” caregiver and get paid, and I understand, he wants to be independent. My other siblings can’t or won’t help.
This old house is falling apart now, but all it has to do is last us a few more years. I’ve gone up on the roof to try to repair a leak 4 times and failed. Bank won’t lend money on broken down house and low income. My brother finally found a Church he likes, the Assembly of God, and I take him on Wed and twice on Sunday. I take him to Doctor’s appointments and to pick up his Meds. I fetch the groceries, cook, clean house, and keep up with the yard.
I’ve donated to Christian Children’s, UNICEF, Disaster Relief and many personal causes in the past and promise to do so again. If you help me I will be able to continue to help my brother and also because I am a big believer of this type help, also help others as soon as I can again. I refuse to give up and this is my call for help. Help make me financial whole again and I will be productive and helpful long into the future.
