Letter to a kind soul
Four years ago there was this boy Andrei, who grew up out of an abusive family with a alcoholic father ,a loving mother and little sister. His life have never been easy before but he somehow managed to get pass that only with some scars, bruises and regrets.
“Four years ago”
I remember how happy he was when he chose to move out with his girlfriend and starting their life together. They were dating for almost a year at the time and things were looking good. He managed to get his driving license, buy his first car, find a good job and a place to stay. It was all he ever wanted.
About a year goes on and they decide that they need a better and safer car that won’t break down every 2 months so he decides to take a loan from the bank on his name and buy a better car. Everything goes smooth, bank gives him the loan, he buys the car and everything goes as planed. He could not been much happier than this and grateful on how things changed for him considering his past.
Another month goes by and he starts noticing that he is having a discomfort around the right testicle so he decides to go to a Dr. D. for further examination. He gets prescribed medicine for a week and an appointment to local hospital for an ECHO. On the ECHO they couldn’t see what is wrong with it beside the fact that is really swollen ,so they decided that a CT-Scan is need it for further examination. The results of CT-Scan showed that he had testicular cancer growing inside the testicle and it need it to be taken out, but first he needs to donate sperm so it could be froze for ten years in the event of the cancer spreading to the other testicle and to do one session of chemotherapy after the surgery to be safe. Everything went well, he got two months of recovery, got back on his feet again and went back to work. I sat there thinking ” This guy is though, he just keeps on going”,” He still has hope in himself and his dreams of doing something with his life”.
“Fast forward a year and six months”
Little did he knew that this was the beginning of a really long and and painful set of events that were about to change the way he sees things, life and others.
It all started on a Monday, having some minor pain on the lower back but being stubborn he did not pay any attention to it, thinking is normal because of the work he does and maybe he worked a bit to hard or did not rest enough. A few days go by but the pain became worst and the left leg began to hurt causing him to not be able to walk or stand on that leg, so he went back to the doctor who helped him before and got checked for kidney stones, got some pain killers and a appointment to a CT-Scan the very next day.
Meanwhile his sister got diagnosticated with polymiozite a rare autoimmune disease that makes her tired, unable to walk and use her muscles. There is no cure for it and nobody knew why this was happening so all they had for her was some experimental medicine that proved to work on some level and made her a bit better to the point where she could walk but not for very long time. It was really sad to see this happening to a 23 years old girl that used to enjoy life, meet new people, make new friends and travel to new places…
When the test results for Andrei came back, it showed a double hernia on the level L5 -L4 with S1 and some other major issues around those spots making him unable to work. That right there was a moment when he nearly gave up all hope if it wasn’t for his mother and his girlfriend who had been their support all along.
Months go by waiting to get the first transforaminal infiltration , covid-19 outbreak ,he gets rescheduled ,his parents get a divorce and the father leaves. Mother keeps taking care of her daughter, eventually Andrew gets his shots which have helped him to ease the pain to an extent but still not being able to work. Doctors said that he is to young to have such a surgery and will be better if he would just try to recuperate…
“The dark January 15th 2021″
It was a regular day for Andrei, he had to wake up around 10 am to do some chores around the house and be ready to go to the hospital to do the recuperation program he was part of. All day long he thought about his father, wondering where he might be because he did not hear from him in the past week. Upon coming back from the hospital he gets a phone call from his girlfriend asking him if is gonna be home soon because diner is almost ready but something was off. When he got home there were two policemen waiting for him and he knew immediately something very bad had happened. The agents told him to take a seat and began explaining what was wrong. Around 4 am they got a call from somebody who went out to walk the dog near a nearby lake. Upon arriving to that spot they found out the body of Andrei’s father hanging from a tree and next to him, a bag full of clothes, his wallet and the phone. The police could not find any signs of foul play and they were pretty sure it was a suicide.
Hearing the news, Andrei broke down to tears, almost refusing to believe his father was gone, not being able to comprehend reality no more. Stating that if he calls his father, he will pick up and this would turn out to be a sick twisted joke. I could see how all hope was fading away and that bright light that once made him glow…was no longer glowing, was no longer bright.
A day goes by and he had to pick himself up to attend the preparation for the funeral, file the paperwork and be there for his mother and sister. I guess it was easier for him to keep being busy and not let the mind thinking about what happened.
After the funeral he began a long fight with himself to stay afloat and to be positive but having financial difficulties didn’t help him much. He used to say ” The way I dress and how I look is exactly how I feel.” ,well he did not shave for two and a half months and was a point were he would shower twice a week only to go the hospital for the recovery program. That was some low self esteem…
“Nowadays”
He got his self esteem back up, started to be more patient with the people around him and loving them the way they are because life is short and there is no time to waste being mad at somebody and holding grudges.
The biggest problem he has right now is financial being pretty hard to keep up with the loan from the bank, rent ,car expenses, taxes and bills. With what he gets every month for being disabled he can only cover half of the rent, pay the bank, cover the car expenses, pay a internet bill and save a little each month for the car insurance and tax. Every thing else like food, bills for water, bills for gas and electricity ,other half of the rent is all provided by his girlfriend who has been there for him. He grew tired of this and became desperate. On top of that his family still has to pay about 1300 euros to the funeral company for the expenses.
That is why he turn to this site, in a hope a few people will see this and maybe they would help him get out of those hard moments.
Yes, it is a sad story,
Sadly, a chapter of my life.
But I could never talk about it,
If the people weren’t kind.
