My wife and I got married nearly 6 years ago. We are both college graduates and we’re drug free. during our first year of marriage I became ill and ended up retiring early due to a disability. we were before my disability able to manage our expenses relatively well each month. However after becoming ill the meager income I receive from my Disability income made it nearly impossible to make ends meat and keep our heads above water. We ended up homeless living out of our camper van for a period of nearly 4 years straight. Many days we suffered hunger because we couldn’t afford to keep gas in the tank and feed ourselves.
We unfortunately had to choose fuel over food most days because we couldn’t just leave our van in a place parked due to the fact that it would be impounded and then we’d have no where to lay our heads at all. It was especially difficult during the winter seasons as we had no form of heating because our vans heater core was broken. So we had to huddle up together for warmth under donated blankets praying that our feet wouldn’t freeze off, or that we wouldn’t develop hypothermia. To boot our vans roof was leaky so we had constant barrages of colds, and even developed walking pneumonia a time or too plus a bad ear infection from the dirty water leaking into my wife’s ear at night. Most of our meals came from digging out of dumpsters of fast food and other restaurants. occasionally we’d go to the salvation army where they would let us get some of the donated groceries once a month. Only issues was without electricity and refrigeration most of it ended up going bad if we weren’t able to cook it all up fast enough.
Instead of begging for money on the streets we started a craft business and were selling handmade jewelry and hats on a table outside of grocery stores and gas station when the weather would permit. We really did want to help ourselves and we were trying but things weren’t going our way. We have had the dream or vision of purchasing a small plot of land and farm on it to become more self reliant. Before the disability set in we had bought an acre of land and were making monthly payments on it.
When our income level dropped to what is is now we had to let that dream go because we couldn’t afford to keep our land where we had proposed we’d begin building our farm life on. We finally were able to get off the streets in the last 9 months and got on low income housing list, were later approve for low income housing. and our income is suiting us just well enough to pay all our primary bills and keep a roof over our head, with very little money left for food or any other incidentals each month. We still have our vision of building a small farm and teaching other to do the same via our social media pages and our Youtube channel. After saving every spare dime we had while homeless and over the last 9 months, we’ve managed to save just enough to purchase another small plot of land cash out, to begin our vision of living sustainable lifestyle. We learned our lesson last time with making payments on a parcel of land, and realized we needed to pay cash for a small plot so we’d assure we owned it outright. Now we’re in need of financial assistance to build infrastructure and build a small house and buy materials and equipment. We need financial assistance because, on my small disability income of less than $15k a year we will never be able to save enough money to afford to build our home and move out of low income housing onto our land and begin farming. if we could manage to get at minimum 6-10 thousand dollars we could move out of our apartment and buy a small motor home or travel trailer and begin living on our own piece of land.
Any donations would free up my small yearly income of $14,440 to purchase materials and tools to begin transforming our land into our sustainable vision of self reliant freedom. If we were able to achieve this we have plans on again teaching other how to build small scale micro farms and how to turn this skill into a trade which could produce income for low income families, as well as helping feed many more who are below poverty level. We want to start a non-profit organization specializing in helping low income family become self sufficient and monetarily free by purchasing small plots of land and building micro farms and fish farming. We believe healthy food and affordable housing are the two main staples to a decent quality of life for even the lowest level of income earners the world over. We just want to do our part to help make the world a better place for those suffering the effects of poverty. We believe that due to our having first hand experience we know best how to help those like us who might be having a hard go of it. With this inside track we could tailor a specialized program like no other to assist the needy in become more self sufficient.
