My name is Iván Meza, I am currently 25 years old and I have worked with my mother since I was 13 years. Im the older son.
The business as such is around 120 years old and this step took several generations with the Marín Barrientos family. The business is known as “Pulperia” as a Costa Rican culture.
Thanks to this we managed to choose a loan to buy the business and our house, the problem lies later.
My mother went into depression because my father was cheating on her, we noticed that some clients and close friends were commenting on me and it also turned out to be true. I decided to take over the business and the family.
My father left home about 2 years ago and left us with nothing. He took all the money we were saving for our project at that time, we applied for another loan from the bank to expand the business, but with the economic situation in Costa Rica, sales fell by 60% and product prices have increased disproportionately and customers are not consuming.
Our project consisted of expanding the business, improving the infrastructure and providing employment opportunities, but we were not successful since my father took all the savings we had for the project, including the money for any emergency. Now we cannot pay the bank and they want to take everything from us, we have nowhere to go.
We asked our “family” for help but it turned out that they made fun of us … so there is no family … they say “if you want money you have to pay taxes”. But how? We don’t even have to pay our monthly payments with the bank.
My family is my mother, 2 sisters, my cat and me.
I have been looking for a job for a year and a half, but it is too long and the little I get is not enough. My sister and mother will take over the business when I find a job.
With new government-approved taxes, services became more expensive and products became disproportionately more expensive.
Our current debt is $ 160000 and the business only gives us to pay expenses like water, electricity, telephone, internet and food. Our monthly payments with the bank are around $ 1700 per month adding our expenses its around $3500 per month and we only give small payments to our debt and we only give small payments to our debt.
I do not want to see my family on the street.
Our store is located in San José, Costa Rica.
Thanks for your support.
