I am a young adult who has been spending the past few years without any income after being laid off of my previous job. I have been finding it difficult to find a new job given my limited skill sets, my lack of contact with people who can vouch for my skills, and until this year, didn’t have a phone number to be contacted with. While I am searching, I have been living with my family, who has been providing me with water, a meal per day, and a place to sleep. Unfortunately, taking care of me has made it more difficult for them to meet their bills, so I try to keep myself from doing much more than eating and sleeping and costing my family money.
I’m in a relatively okay spot right now, but I’m still looking for resources to help me apply to a job, and provide me with extra money so that I can afford my own little meals and other necessities that my family don’t have the money for. For example, all of my shirts and some of my pants are ripped, which would make it difficult for me to present myself when applying to a new job.
My aim is to work in a field related to computer science or work with hardware, but I haven’t been able to reach these fields as I ended up dropping out after my first year at the University of Washington, after having a deficit of high school level English credits for graduation. I have tried to gain these credits multiple times, also going to a community college to attempt to get the credits, but unfortunately continued to fail the English classes and felt the amount of money being spent on my education was being wasted on continuously failing.
I think a part of the failure was a result in me not reaching out and asking people for help. My main focuses have always been to make sure I made it to class on time and just taking the assignments. I rarely spent time at school when hours weren’t in session, and I didn’t reach out to tutors when I needed it. I stopped going to school and managed to find a job thanks to a special agency that aided me in locating one. Unfortunately, I only managed to stay there for a year as I couldn’t perform at optimal performance in comparison to the other employees.
Now I’m hoping to work on my skills with technology while I am looking for a new job, such as getting various computer parts so I could practice putting computers together and getting testing devices together to look into their functionality. I currently have a single laptop I use for a couple of games and checking E-mails, which might not be good enough for testing environments.
If at all possible, I’d like to look into doing streams as well to see if I can make anything off of that. I’ve seen many people being able to live off of streams, and having the resources to give that a shot would be incredibly helpful as well. I do have a mic and headphones for this already, so all I would really need is recording equipment to give that a shot. Though I do want to focus more on the other things before I look into this.
Overall, I want to try to improve myself and improve my chances of finding a job while I am unemployed. It would be great to let off some of the stress on my family so they can focus on themselves and I can focus on supporting me. If I end up getting any donations, these are the things I’ll likely spend it on:
- Clothes – Such as Shirts, Pants, and some Underwear.
- Bus payments – I do not drive, but transit is very accessible. I’ll need it if I look for job opportunities.
- Doctor/Dentist Appointments, if needed
- A new mousepad and Mouse for my Laptop
- A capture device for some of my devices
- Some cheap Computer parts for testing and experimenting
- A more powerful computer to help compiling times and streaming
These are the things that come to mind right now. I do want to focus on resources that can help me improve my skills, though I’m uncertain what I’d need to purchase – if anything – to help with those improvements. But at the very least having these things can help me with some of my hobbies and I may be able to find opportunities with them.
I’d appreciate any help offered, and hope everyone has a nice day.
