A Second Chance

Hello everyone,

This has to be the hardest thing I’ve ever done.  Just to give you a little background about me, I graduated HS, got my first job working as  a file clerk and at that time I made 800.00 dollars a month, and 400 of it went to renting a bachelor suite with green shag carpet.  So I was 17 and it was was it was.  I got other jobs as I got older, learnt Information Technology and Computer skills and did not too bad at mostly entry level jobs.  Seemed like because my family didn’t have the money for me to go to university and I didn’t qualify for any type of education assistance back in those days, every employer I had paid me the least.   I had one VP at a credit union I worked for who was leaving his job, call me in his office to say “so long, it was good working with you” and “you deserve to be making double what you are”, but he never went to bat for me.  But that was ok, I was working and paying my own way and it didn’t matter that I was always the low man on the totem poll.  So life carried on.

So, fast forward a bit.  I had a son who is the one person in my life who I admire and is really  the reason I want to live.  When my son came into my life, I preached to him about obtaining a university education and how important it was.  When he was  9 or 10, I remember us driving to get groceries, and I looked over to him and asked “Please promise me you will do well in school and continue your education so you never have to struggle with paying bills and just living a good life as a good person”.

Well fast forward a bit more.  My son and I moved to the US from Canada in 2013.  I got a job with a temporary work visa.  This was incredible, I never thought that I would ever have a chance like this, after all I’m just a nobody.  My son  finished HS and  got his bachelors degree.  I spent every penny I had to pay the international tuition rates and all his expenses.  But he did it!  I hope he does not have to struggle like me, ever!  Now, for me, I have been held back with the restrictions on my work visa, meaning I can only work at one employer and in only restricted jobs.  So, having a second job to help with expenses or help with saving a few hundred has not been an option for me.   I followed all the rules legally so that I could continue to work here and help my son get a start in life.  I have never cheated, lied or did anything that would jeopardize being able to work and live here.  Just to give you some concept as to what it cost for an education at an international rate, I had paid over 120,000 US over 4  years in tuition, books, etc.  It probably is way more, but I just can’t think about it because it bothers me so much.

So, I guess what I am trying to say is that I pushed ahead, made choices to make sure that my son had the best possible chance in life, I have never hurt anyone, I have always followed the law (not even a parking ticket).  I had rules and laws I had to follow for where I worked.  If I could have worked 24/7 to help with everything, I would have.  It’s been a 9 year journey and it’s drained me.  You might be asking if I think it was worth it.  Yes, my son has a chance to make it on his own and and contribute to the community.

I was hoping that you might be able to help me with my car.  The transmission went on it and I have high credit card debt that I struggle to pay every month.  I realize I’m not the only one feeling the pain of inflation, gas, groceries, etc.  I have given up my apartment and an renting a 9×12 ft room from a friend in her house.  It’s embarrassing, that I am where I am at my age.  This is the truth, maybe it’s not a life or death situation like others are struggling with, but I don’t have a lot of time left to pay back my credit cards and fix my car.  If you can  help me out I would appreciate it.

Thank you.
