Tuition fees, this world needs chemists.

Dear reader,

It goes against my believes to beg others for money but as a 20 year old chemistry student I have no other option. Luckily, I study in the Netherlands in a small yet cozy Dutch town which is located on a seaside. Originally, I come from Central Asia and as a non-European I have relatively high tuition fees which are 4 times higher than what my European fellows pay. Due to my non-European originality I also couldn’t get a part time job since I need a work permit which is supposed to be made by an employer. My requests were either rejected or just ignored as it’s I quote “too much paper work”. With the pandemic I lost all hope to find any kind of work. Being honest with you, I had a chance to work illegally but that went only for a month. For a month I worked at a product line, 4 to 5 times a week, with extra hours and sometimes we had night shifts. At the end I got a minimal wage.

I deepened myself into the unknown world of chemistry when I was 13. My tutor was a very strict but kind soviet lady, who truly taught me a lot and surely shared her passion about chemistry with me. When I graduated like many young adults I was in doubt. My two options were chemistry and International Relations at the Moscow State University. Liberal part of me stopped me from doing IR in Russia and instead I went to the Netherlands, which I thank myself and parents for. I truly love this place and would want to stay living here and become a proud Dutch citizen. Again, being completely honest with you, but I didn’t do my best during the first year. Instead I explored life. I met many new people from all of the world, I discovered the world of an adult life in all its sense, I found myself after all. That being said I do have several achievements from the first year. I became a student ambassador of my university, I got into an Analytical Talent Science Program (ASTP) and I got propedeuse (got all the credits). After settling down with my goals and visions, during the 2nd year of my study I started focusing on studying and my career. Currently my grades average out to 8,3 (out of 10) and I am a board member of the student association, I am deeply enjoying psychology and neuroscience, and I am slowly learning the Dutch.

I have 2 more years to go and there is one thing that I can’t stop thinking about and that’s my tuition fees. My family can’t help me anymore. Below I will add an image of my statement of enrolment for 2020-2021. There you could see the that my tuition costs 7835 euros which is enormously high for an average family from developing region. I know for sure that I can manage my accommodation and living expenses. But I ask you to show mercy and help me finish another two years of university. The fact that my education is based on somebody’s money definitely boosts my motivation to get the best out of it.
