Hello, whoever’s reading this. My name is Oliver Anderson, and I’m 17 years old. I’m not prone to use mediums like this often to “beg for money,” but I’m approaching a juncture in my life in which that may actually be required. My family and I are from Albuquerque, New Mexico, but are now living in Lexington, Missouri because of circumstances I will now divulge. We have always been poor, with a total family income of around $40,000 and parents working nearly 80 hour work weeks. On top of this, our household was composed of five people- both of my parents, myself, my brother, and my grandfather, who has just recently passed. While I was always very invested in my education and have dreamed of attending college and earning a degree in theoretical mathematics (of which I’ve already found myself theorizing upon), my brother was not, and he became a heroin user while I was still very young. After stealing from my family, putting us through physical and emotional abuse, and drug dealing himself, our household had no choice but to pay for my brother to get help in rehab. Being that we’d tried this route before with many facilities paid for by our insurance that didn’t work, we tried something drastic, putting him in a 4-year, approximately $50,000 facility called Habilitat in Hawaii. Of course, we couldn’t pay for this all ourselves, and we resorted to asking longtime family friends for some aid in this matter. Now, we were completely drained of money and on top of this, we were receiving threats of violence from people whom my brother owed money from his times of dealing drugs. Panicked, my family moved almost immediately to Missouri (and this was only a few months ago at this point; around July) out of want to start a better life altogether. After selling our house and buying a new one here, (around $45,000), we have around $5,000 at our disposal and no future ways of receiving income in place here. My dad did production work for a major orchestra in Albuquerque, and he’s very qualified for a job like that, but he doesn’t have a college education and he both he and my mom (who was a substitute teacher) wouldn’t be able to support our situation on minimum wages. In our new house, we haven’t had money to buy new appliances, such as a refrigerator or a microwave, and we have to store our food in a cooler. We don’t have home wifi, and the only way I’m typing this right now is I’m on the town library’s internet on a chrome-book I was able to buy from my friend for $80. On top of this, I’m 17, want to pursue a career in math and attend a college with a great program where that’s concerned, but we don’t have the money to fund it. I’m trying to apply for as many scholarships as I can at our state school, but that’s not a sure way of achieving my dream. If someone is reading this, please. I want to go to college, specialize in something, unlike my parents, and have a happy life with a career I enjoy. Thank you so much, and God bless.
